I agree gameplay should be first and foremost. Graphics will catch your eye at first but you have to have good gameplay and some depth.
These technical demos like Quantic Dream showed are always quite misleading. You really think characters in Killzone will look that polished? I can see it in some cutscene but not in real world applications where the gamer has full control.
As much as I would love GT6 to be a launch title I'm not sure that would be a good business move. One reason is they already announced Drive Club for the PS4 as a launch game. The other reason is the GT franchise is probably their biggest IP. The people who are going to buy a PS4 at launch are likely the ones who bought a PS3 at launch. She probably knows the demographics of its userbase. Teenagers who like rap music, that love to play it lid in the background while online, but that doesn't mean she can't at least try and market beyond that. We know most owners are teenage boys who don't have a problem with this.

This is one of the issues, trying to identify itself from the mainstream computer user and the hardcore who builds their own. Valve also won't likely sell the hardware at a loss like the console makers often do. That's because Valve does not charge as much for royalties and updates that they do to have software offset hardware costs.
If they can scale the systems to different pricing while making it competitive they might do ok.
You're right and I know a few of them off-hand that have multiple accounts. It should be like Neogaf, one account per ip address and if you screw up too bad so sad.
I think every 3 years or so would be the perfect fit. Most console cycles last about 6 years so it would be nice to see 2 on each generation. No way would I like to see one every year.
