Didn't we just have a "Is Illumiroom Microsoft's Secret Weapon" article a day or two ago? Diamond sword being subbed in to keep it from being flagged as a dupe. These armchair journalists really should try harder.
Either way, I work with projectors every day. No projector for less than $500 will be any good at competing against ambient light. Add in the short throw lens, which makes it even more expensive, the Xbox, and Kinect 2... I don't see this comi...
seems like we get a new "what to expect" article every day. Typically just a regurgitation of "here's all the rumors we've heard, plus some personal opinion.".
You can do some amazing things with video mapping (see attached video). The potential it has when married with interactive gaming is awesome. I just think they're jumping the gun a bit. Video mapping is an expensive art form. The projectors we like to use cost around $50,000 each, and for large installations we'll use several of them. There are 2 of them being used in the video I attached (not my work, by the way, just the work of someone I admire).
I admire Microsoft...
I am a professional video mapper. I've been using this technology to create visual installations at concerts for years. In order for it to be useful against ambient light (both from windows or lights on in the house and from the TV itself), you're going to want a 2500 lumen or brighter projector (and that's on the very, very low end. We use a minimum of 5,000 lumens). You can pick up a 2500-3000 lumen short throw projector for around $500 these days. We'll say it'll cost M...
The reason he can see in 3d with 3ds is that his eyes are off convergence from normal eyes, they are crooked. however, by holding 3ds at a set distance from his face, the 2 images converge properly (for him) and he sees in 3D. otherwise he's just seeing 2 slightly offset 2D images that never line up to make a 3D picture. Chances are, what he sees as normal 3D on 3DS would be double vision to most of the rest of us... but his offset eyes are able to converge the 2 images into one.
Perfect example of a butthurt fanboy.
It's amusing.
Microsoft is the one in trouble here, as that check book is only going to get them some exclusivity contracts that the third party publisher's team of lawyers will non-stop try to find a loophole in so they can sell it to another console as well. Look at Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (they just renamed the game to get around that contract), Bioshock, etc... All games MS paid good money to be exclusive that wound up on PS3. They even had to watch Bungie walk out on PS4's stage and re...
You would get no reflection at all. Part of what video mapping does is masks out certain areas of the projector's image so that it only projects where you want it to. There would be a big black rectangle shaped hole in the projector's video image where your TV is supposed to go, so there would be no light to reflect.
However, you are right about needing a dark room (with light colored walls) in order to get a good image. This is why, in many cases, you see them using ...
@gildarts
MS has more studios if you count the raw number, but once you break them down you come to realize that 5 of those studios are making casual kinect titles, and only 4-5 of them have ever released a multi-million copy selling game.
Sony invested in studios that had proven themselves before they were bought. Microsoft, not so much.

We saw them try the third party exclusive thing last gen. It didn't work out very well for them. The only third party high profile exclusive they managed to hang onto for the full generation was Gears of War. All the rest, most notably the Mass Effect series, went on to appear on multiple other consoles. Hell, Microsoft even had to watch Bungie walk out on stage at the PS4 reveal.
Instead of wasting money on third party partnerships that will be undone as soon as the dev...
Did you even read it? The article mentions respawn's next game, which was founded by the creators of COD. It is not a COD game.
I do video projection mapping for a living, so I know exactly what kinds of hurdles this device is facing when used in the real world. I actually wrote an article about this tech when it was first announced detailing the pros and cons of using this tech for video games (search under my username for submitted articles, I'm sure it's in there somewhere). It has a lot of issues to overcome before it'll be anything more than an expensive gimmick. One that requires another expensive gi...
I would imaging they are going to show the console at this or another similar event to prevent MS from being able to make any jokes about them not showing it during their reveal. I feel like Sony isn't going to give Microsoft an inch of room to attack them on this one.
I was talking about both the PS4 and Next Xbox rumors, I should have clarified. Since both were coming out around the same time, and in some cases were coming from the same sources, I spoke of them together. The PS4's rumors all turned out to be true, and now we're seeing the Xbox end of things starting to pan out as well.
It's a logical evolution. 360 = circle, surrounding... infinity = twisted circle, everything. the symbol also is a 8 sideways, and the box is said to run on windows 8.
Yet another part of the rumors that was proven true. They have been dead on so far. PS4 was exactly what they said it'd be, and now Xbox is turning out to be exactly what they said it'd be.
The game had great acting, and for an early PS3 title it did a fantastic job of creating a cinematic experience. The gameplay was a bit hollow, hack, slash and steering weapons with sixaxis was about all they had to offer, but it was still a great title. I definitely would like to see a sequel where more variety is put into the gameplay elements.
I find ordering a pizza on my phone to be easier. I can do it literally anywhere and the device doesn't have to boot up and connect to a network. It's "always on"... :P
The 15% off is cool, but I can't stand Pizza Hut's greasy pizza.
There are a number of low end GPUs that use GDDR5. My old radeon 6000 series card has it. The Nvidia card I had before it also used it.
Also, the higher latency issue with GDDR5 isn't as much as you make it out to be. Videogames are not as dependent on their CPU as they are their GPU, and the GPU is what needs the bandwidth.
@Mike Meyers
MGS4 filled a 50gb dual layer blu-ray. With 360 DVDs only being able to hold 7gb, it would take 7 dvds to equal 49GB.
