With the Cell, the PS3 took a whole new direction. The PS2 was wonderfully weird as well. However, with the tech now becoming mature - we will most probably see them leverage this - which will mean less development cost - much more muscle under the hood - as they will just improve on the current tech. Don't see them for example use something else than the Cell.
So we should most probably expect a much more capable Cell, much more capable GPU (NVidia most likely). Which would mea...
According to the first benchmark (first console to sell 10m) they should have won.
Now they will do the easy way... drop the price... release the 720 early just before the PS3 overtakes it - and claim they won.
But BluRay is dead... DLC was going to kill it... Upscale DVD was going to stop BR from gaining traction...

If the PS2 slips to $99 for the holiday season in especially China, India, Africa - with plenty of games available - low cost platinum titles - then it is an excelent first console for the low cost market. It still has another year or two left in it for the mass market.
Toss in a motion controller / eye toy - and the PS2 will live for another 3 years easily. I still buy PS2 games to play on my PS3. Good value. For the low cost - all the classics at bargain basement prices.
What a strange statement there. I am simply stating the FACT that of late the PS2 sales have been getting closer and closer to the XB360 sales - and you state it as SPAM? It is a valid observation. No hate or spam. Simply the fact that the XB360 dropped to third - and is now in danger of dropping below a previous gen console. We saw the same when the XBox was outsold by the PS1 in Japan!
Seems like a strange move - but when you get one company bough out - sometimes it makes sense to merge them. But creativity suffers if you have to toe one corporate line - but there could be some cost savings.
Time will tell if a super big studio or a couple of independand 1st and 2nd party studios is the best way to go.
I have the PS2 FNR3. One of my favorite games. No real incentive to get FNR3 for PS3 as the PS2 version is good enough. Will pick up FNR4 if there is some noticable improvements.
Only about the 100th story about Killzone 2 being as good as the target render and that the gameplay being awesome. Slow day for news?
If it is not so RRoD prone, and the price drops again - I might be tempted to get one. But then - I am not going to buy it just to play Halo and Gears of War. So the incentive is a bit low. All the games I like playing is on the PS3 anyway.
Because when you look at the stats - the PS3 is gaining momentum, the XB360 is losing momentum. Price drops helps to turn a bit of the momentum.
What I think played quite a role is that at the rate the PS2 was selling vs the XB360 - the XB360 was about to be overtaken by the PS2! Now that would be a marketing disaster no matter how the FUD is being made up or how hard you try to put a spin on the story. We all know it. MS is desperate to not end last this gen. Even if they have to lose a couple of Billion. What we have here people is ego vs sound judgement. The XB360 is already the cheapest console out. At the pace sales was going they were close to being outsold by the PS2!!!
But MS has Billions to throw at this war. Just sad - because in effect they are flooding the market with a defective product. The XB360's life span will be short again this gen. The PS3 is only starting to...
When will they let this go. Let me prove to you that DVD = BR quality.
You copy a short movie in 1080p resolution on a CD, a DVD and a BR - or a memory stick. You play it back on your HD TV. Hey - presto! DVD is as good as BR in terms of quality!
Size that matters. You can get 10 minutes of HD quality vs hours. Upscaling will never match the real thing.

In this week already 2 comparisons where the PS3 version is not as the people with demo's see it. What is wrong with the gaming press? They try the same lame trick to make the PS3 version look washed out. This with the XB360 hige price cuts... seems like MS is getting real desperate...
No Max... they are not lazy. They had to work hard to ensure that RGB full is off. Just in case the PS3 version came out tops. And if it would, they would change the images around... you know - like some other racing game?

Get a ZX Spectrum emulator - play Sabrewulf, Ant Attack, Highway Encounter...
Heck on my phone I have a couple of emulators loaded already. PocketMAME, PocketClive... play Sabrewulf on my phone.
With 200GB capacity it has a bit of life left - maybe ten or fifteen years. 5? No. But most likely we will see the Purple Ray or Holographic with the PS4. Maybe he thinks in terms of Playstation releases. Sony seems to always upgrade the medium with every Playstation release.
All these great games you are arguing about do a lot to bring as much realism as possible. Kudos to all the devs who gave us these games. Anyone of the top three driving simulators is good enough that the average gamer will enjoy it.
