You're missing the point. The point is that many of the things about the PS3's later success were reactionary. They were in response to a competitor's success.
In fact, the same thing happened with the PS2. Voice chat and online features in SOCOM? Xbox Live caught on, so people were into that. Hell, Killzone was designed to be a "Halo killer." None of those things would've happened unless there was another company achiev...
The game industry is already being shaken up due to publisher-set quotas where if you don't sell a million copies, your development house isn't likely to survive. This situation is even worse. Ken Levine closed the studio after a critically acclaimed game got a respectable amount of sales. The people who worked at Irrational weren't in any real position to expect this.
The situation is that these people got laid off without any real foresight, not because a game &...
That explanation is a very short-term description. Very socially Darwinian, actually.
In that view, the PS3 should've been dead a long time ago. Do you really think that we would have games like Uncharted 2 or Journey if Sony kept the PS3 at its original price and stayed the course they launched on?
And "weaker" platform is subjective, but I'm assuming you mean "weaker on the market." Competition is diverse challenge, not parity or...
"I don't know why people think Sony would get lazy is they got the monopoly."
Look at every other situation where one company owns the entire market share. Look at something like Madden; since EA has no competition, they can be as lazy as they want, because there's no alternative. It's either buy a stripped-down, feature-neutered football game or no football game at all.
Look at last gen: the Xbox 360 was the best thing that ever happene...
What about the "Hell Valley Sky Trees" of Super Mario Galaxy 2? Talk about out of place.
@Metallox
Exactly. They're making indie games. Chris Seavor is working on an eShop game, in fact. Rare's already with Nintendo.
That's a really great lineup. The Swapper was such an under-the-radar gem and Guacamelee is good fun all around.
Just a few months away? If that's true, that's awesome, but it seems off to me. Wouldn't it be best to release the games closer to the animated series' debut?
It's sad, but I'm skeptical at Ken handing the Bioshock franchise off to 2K. Irrational Games really made something special with Bioshock, so I am concerned about giving a franchise with such a unique and distinctive vision off to another company.
Not sure, but we'll see.
Seriously, though, who cares if something's on physical media or not? Just make a good game and people will buy it. Cliffy B has this notion that there's only one way to be progressive in the industry and everything else is "old guard."
That kind of attitude leads to always-online and multiple layers of DRM before anyone is ready for them.
You're never too old to have fun.
@-Foxtrot
I'd buy your response more if you actually made an effort to note the other instances where public opinion was so ferocious over a review score, ones that weren't reserved for a Nintendo franchise and were blatantly worse. And I'm speaking exclusively about Gamespot: the fact is that people were sending death threats to Tom McShea over the review of The Last of Us. Trust me; I was an avid Gamespot user when that happened, so I was exposed to that fallout...
I'm very surprised that they even made it to Viridian City.
Especially since you can't play the game anymore. It was removed from the store.
Not really. It's getting more high 8's and low-to-mid 9's. I've even seen some 10's floating about from places like Destructoid.
Kind of obscure, but I always dug the Viewtiful Joe couple of Joe and Silvia. Very lighthearted approach to romance.
Intelligent bubble for you.
I wonder what Retro Studios will do next. I'd like them to tackle another franchise like Star Fox or F-Zero.
I hope so. I'm tired of Call of Duty.
I think with 2K running development, this has a much higher chance of getting released. Ken Levine may have expressed enthusiasm in making Bioshock Vita at the system's launch, but it's clear that his interest waned down the line.
2K seems more enthusiastic in getting these kinds of properties going, so hopefully with them in control of the license, the Vita will get its share of Bioshock.
