@ Darkride

"When we have data on the PS3's 3rd year, maybe then we'll compare it to the 360's 3rd year and see how it stacks up. Until the time there's something to compare that data too, I don't see how it's relevant."

So, the 360's best sales year is irrelevant because there is nothing to compare it to? Whether you choose to accept it or not, those 360 sales did, in fact, happen. Basically, your arguements in favor of PS3 revolve mainly around ignor...

@Darkride

Your "Honda vs. Porsche" comparison is ridiculous. The 360 and PS3 are nearly identical in performance. Nearly 80% of the games for each console are multi-platform, and they look and play exactly the same on both consoles. PS3 has a slight edge in graphics on it's exclusives, but that's it as far as system performance goes.

This is more like a BMW vs. Porsche race. Each competitor has it's advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, they...

This is, withou a doubt, an overwhelmingly pro-Sony site (about 2:1 is my estimate). Just look at the agree/disagree ratio when someone says something negative about 360 compared to when someone says something negative about PS3.

@4.8 & 4.9

There are 2 ways of measuring "same timeframe" sales. If you measure PS3's first 2 years versus 360's first 2 years, PS3 is ahead. But, the 360's 3rd year was it's best, and is most relevant because it's the most recent. That is why this arguement is invalid - it considers ALL PS3 sales while ignoring the 360's best sales year.

I could counter your "same timeframe" arguement by comparing PS3's sales since launch to 360's sale...

Darkpower - you make some good points, but I disagree with a few others. Sure, MS threw money around this generation, but they had to. They were outsold 6:1 by Sony last generation. MS couldn't just do business exactly as they did last generation and expect different results. They needed to give gamers a compelling reason to choose the Xbox brand this time around. Now that the 360 is more established than the original Xbox, MS can (if they want to) begin employing a more traditional busi...

Metacritic 90+ scores for exclusives:

Xbox 360 - 5
PS3 - 4

You are right that PS3 has both quality and quantity, but the 360 does as well. Both PS3 and 360 have quality and quantity. There's no monopoly on either side despite some people's best efforts to prove otherwise.

EDIT @ below - I was just comparing each console's very best. I never implied that games that score in the 80's aren't good. Besides, a quality game is a quality game, ...

It's about the games - plain and simple. If people enjoy 360 games more than PS3 games - which, obviously, millions do - they will tolerate the inconveniences of possibly defective hardware or potential failure. Just like gamers tolerated the NES, PS1, and PS2. If the most reliable hardware always came out on top, Master System would have beaten NES, Saturn or N64 would have beaten PS1, and Xbox would have beaten PS2. But, as we all know, gamers didn't abandon any of those generation-lead...

There is nothing wrong with quantity of games - it give you more choice. 360 has quality too - 5 games 90 or higher Metacritic (Compared to 4 for PS3). Who cares how many bad games it has - you don't have to play the bad ones to get to the good ones.

Quantity does not equal quality, but more quantity gives you a better chance of finding more games that appeal to you.

If he had said "more since launch" that point may be valid. His question was "Who is selling more ? ". Anyway you try to spin it, 29 is ALWAYS MORE than 21. Besides, you can't just ignore the 360's first year sales and pretend they don't exist.

Since you guys like to play games with numbers, I'll play along too. What if the 360 had been released at the same time as PS3. Is there any reason to believe that a gamer who bought a 360 in it's first year woul...

Last time I checked, 29 million is more than 21 million. Using your math, PS3 will catch 360 by about the year 2017.

"Starting Nov of 2007 the PS3 pulled ahead of the 360 worldwide and look to have outsold them every month up until the 360's price cut in Sept of 08"

Sony reconfigured the PS3 and dropped the price in October, 2007. The PS3 didn't just suddenly "pull ahead", it was due to a price drop. When MS dropped it's price next, the 360 pulled ahead. It's an ongoing cycle.

Also, MS has already said that they will drop their price if Sony does. I'm su...

"And if the PS3 gets a price cut soon, I think it's pretty safe to assume it'll pull in front of the 360 again"

Not likely. If the PS3 gets another price cut, so will the 360. Don't forget, the PS3 has already had a bigger price cut than the 360, so MS still has room to drop the 360's price. PS3's primary SKU started at $600, now it's $400 - a 33% price drop in just 2+ years. The 360's primary SKU started at $400, it's now $300 - a 25% drop in 3+ years. Only the ...

"the PS3 is even DESPITE A HUGE PRICE CUT by the the 360"

Huge 360 price cut? Look a little closer. PS3's main SKU was released at $600 - it's now $400 after 2 1/2 years - a 33% price drop. 360's main SKU - the Pro - started at $400. It's now $300 after 3 1/2 years - only a 25% drop. The 360 Arcade has been dropped equally to the PS3's 33%. Does Sony really need to cut a full 50% off the PS3's price (to $299) just to pull even? That would be unprecedented.

"We all know NPD=Worldwide right?"

Sony just announced Killzone 2 sold over 1 million copies worldwide. NPD reports over 600,000 in the U.S. ALONE. I guess a single country accounting for over half of a games sales is insignificant in your world, right?

6266d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Over 600,000 (i.e. nearly half) of those KZ2 sales came from the U.S. ALONE. There is a world outside the U.S., but there is NO country even remotely close to the US in game sales.

6266d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

RE5 for 360 sold over 900,000 in the US ALONE - that's pretty significant. All the rest of the countries in the world COMBINED can't equal what the US sells.

ANYONE who puts out quality games, regardless of whether they are first or third party, exclusive or not, is benefitting gamers.

Halo 3's marketing campaign is LONG since over, yet it still continues to sell extremely well 18 months later. Quality sells, not hype or marketing.
