You can't blame MS for going after the casual gamers (if that is what they are doing). Those 11, 12, & 13 year olds who got a Wii when it came out 3 years ago are going to be 14, 15, & 16 soon. They will be looking to "upgrade" from Wii to either PS3 or 360 without completely giving up the kinds of games the Wii offered. Both MS & Sony would be wise to target those parents - it could mean the difference between a good and a great Christmas sales season (I think Sony h...

Metacritic:
Forza 1 - 92
Forza 2 - 91
GT4 - 89
GT5P - 84

So, the higher rated game is a "turd"? Of course, I'm sure you'll pull the usual PS3 fanboy crap and just dismiss the dozens of reviews that go into a Metacritic score as "meaningless" or a "conspiracy".

"Compare it to a forza demo if you want" - Luckily, I don't have to. I've been playing the full version for 2 years, while you have 6 tr...

"Gran Turismo 5 is going to blow everything out of the water. Everything."

Good thing your crystal ball is so clear - do you know tomorrow's lottery numbers too? GT5 does not even exist yet, except in demo form. Right now, Forza 2 is the only full current generation driving sim available. It has 35 tracks and over 300 cars. It may not look as good as GT5P, but remember, it came out in 2007. Also, realism is a matter of personal preference - there is no way to mea...

Actually, in the U.S., the 360 is up about 25% in the first three months of 2009 compared to the first three months of 2008. That's MANY more units moved.

Two excellent games, and VOOT is finally being released to the larger audience it deserves. However, you can buy Outrun 2006 for Xbox and PS2 for less than $10 and play it on the 360 and PS3. It's the same game, but the disc version has the full Outrun 2 as well, which includes 15 more tracks to race.

So, if Sony were to announce at E3 that "Gears of War 3" would be on PS3 as well as 360, you would just shrug it off as "another multi-platform announcement"?

The thousands of comments on N4G about the FF13 announcement sure made it seem like a show stealer. No other announcement received even half the attention.

Read IGN's "History of Sega" for some interesting facts about Sega's downfall. Sega actually had a chance to buy the chipsets that eventually went into both N64 and Playstation 1. But, as usual, Sega of Japan intervened and chose the inferior design that went on to become the Saturn. In Stephen Kent's excellent book "The Ultimate History of Videogames", he points out that Sega of Japan's president chose the Saturn chipset as a favor to a golf buddy. Sega could have had...

"Sega failed when they tried these tactics on SNES"

Actually, Sega of America was extremely successful with their advertising which called out the SNES. It helped Sega gain a 55% market share in the US for the Sega Genesis, after having a 7% share only a few years earlier. However, even though the US ad campaign was extremely successful, Sega of Japan was too stubborn to follow the lead of Sega of America. They had their own ideas, and refused to budge,...

Nothing wrong with knowing your history. Sales DO matter because more sales equals more profit for developers. In the end, that means more games for us.

Besides, this "sales don't matter" mentality has come up only recently here on N4G. It's not too hard to figure out why.

Super Mario series non pack-ins - 52 million. Includes SMB2, SMB3, SM64, SM Sunshine, & SM Galaxy. Plus, the packed-in games were not necessarily packed in with all configurations of each console. SMB1 & SM World were also sold seperately at times, so the number is actually higher than 52 milion, but there is no data on how many were seperate sales.

GT series - 42 million. Very impressive, but hardly the best selling console game of all time.

The $30 million Halo 3 ad campaign is LONG since over, and I doubt any critics are still getting gifts today (if that is even true), yet Halo 3 STILL continues to sell extremely well, as well as being a top online game 18 months after it's release. Hype may help a game sell at launch, but quality keeps it selling long after.

PS3 will be 5 or 6 years old by then. I'm sure whatever MS comes up with will far exceed the PS3's specs, at a similar price, just as the PS4 will as well at around the same time. Laws of technology have proven that capacities double, while prices remain the same, about every two years. Nintendo, on the other hand, could use 5 year old technology in 2011 to produce a PS3 quality Wii 2 and sell it dirt cheap.

Like many people here, I have a "real" life and a "gaming" life, but unlike many, I can keep them seperate from one another. I don't think about games when I'm at work or with my family. I was not bashing the GT series - I was bashing those who favor graphics over gameplay. If it wasn't for GT, many of my favorite racing games may not exist today. As for Forza, it is the only racing series to successfully compete with, and in some ways surpass, GT - and I give it the c...

I'm glad enough true gamers looked past the hype, propaganda, and huge past sales of the GT series and took a chance on a little known gem called "Forza". My gaming life would be considerably less exciting had that not happened. Real gamers look at the accuracy of the racing engine first and foremost, while other care more about graphics.

I was referring to the 360's first two years (starting in 2005) compared to the PS3's first two years (starting in 2006). The 10.5 million was reported by each company a couple months ago - it was a BIG deal on these pages when the numbers came out. Sony fans were excited when it was reported that the 360 didn't outsell the PS3 in 2008. Also, you can look at NPD or VGChartz to see 2009's numbers, and how they compare to 2008's first three months.

@cliffbo

Interesting analogy. However, if a new race starts while the first is only 60% complete, will anyone even care who ends up winning the first race, or will most attention have shifted to the second race?

"Good thing MS followers have the metacritic and sales numbers to discuss about."

So, critical and commercial success are somehow irrelevant? If Forza 2 (or 1 for that matter) had been a commercial and critical flop, there would mosty likely be no Forza 3 to talk about. Just like if Gran Turismo 1 was a commercial and critical flop, there would not have been any sequels.

As for swapping discs, if it takes 20 seconds to swap a disc, and...

"How many times do Xbox fanboys need to be reminded that PS3 is selling better than the 360 did"

If you are referring to the PS3's first two years vs. the 360's first two years, then you are right - PS3 did sell more in that specific time frame. That arguement is very flawed, however, because the 360's best sales have been in it's most recent year, a timeframe ignored by that arguement.

I don't live in 2005, 2006, or 2007 anymor...

To get back on topic, those 11, 12, and 13 year olds who loved Wii in 2006 and 2007 will be 14, 15, and 16 years old this year. Many will be looking to "upgrade" from Wii. MS and Sony would be very wise to try to court the parents of those kids. Whichever console can position itself as a more traditional, somewhat hardcore upgrade, without completely abandoning the casual fun that Wii owners have come to expect, will have a very good sales year, especially this Christmas.
