My kids (age 10 and under) thought this was absolutely hilarious when the video came out last year. Of course, they sometimes pretend they have pet headcrabs.
Yes, I'm a parent, and I sometimes game. Of course, my kids actually understand the difference between fantasy and reality, too. Every kid's different...
...and I was not disappointed at all. InFamous 2 will be another first day for me.
The graphics in the first one were competent, but not astounding. I only really noticed the 'jaggies' at one point (fight w/Alden) but a further tuning of their engine would make for an awesome experience. (Props to Sucker Punch for absolutely *nailing* the control scheme, though.)
As fun as it would be to play Cole again, it's hard to see how they'd develop his powers further. I mean,...
Creepy games, and as a bonus they work fine on Linux.
OK, hold up. I was one of the people who did, in fact, install Linux on my PS3. (Ubuntu 9.04, with the vram memory hack.)
I'm the first to concede that I didn't do much with it after that. But that's because I've got a family and a life. I'd certainly *intended* to get MAME and other such emulators set up - playing some of the classics on a big flat-panel would be a lot of fun. I even had some development ideas:
Updated my 40GB phat (since upgraded to 80GB) a couple days ago with no ill effects, aside from having my Linux partition inaccessible. (To be honest, though, I wasn't using it.)
You can check out Androlib.com to see what kind of apps are available. My Droid comes with Quickoffice which has opened up an Excel spreadsheet and a Word doc for me (I've only had it about a week).
The browser on the Droid is awesome - no Flash "yet", but otherwise *very* nice. Email is very good, but the current Gmail/Email app can't accept calendar invites in .ics (iCal) format; you can see that you got an invite, but can't accept or decline until you get to a PC. No...
Home isn't as bad as this:
http://www.penny-arcade.com...
...but it definitely has some fail in it. One was mentioned in the article: the loading screens. That has to go, or at least be pared *way* down.
The other is limited instances. This is a *virtual* damn world, why the hell should I have to wait in line to play a minigame?
Pennywise, the Wii certainly 'failed' hardcore gamers. Even moderate gamers like me don't find it appealing.
But apparently there are a *lot* of people for whom the Wii is *very* attractive. And they've expressed that appreciation in the way companies notice: $$$. Nintendo went for a different ecological niche and won big with it.
Now, the ecology is changing some. Three years later, there are quite a few more HDTVs out there, and the competition is developing a resp...
Yeah, when you look at a map, you can see the outlines of some of the hexes, but if you're not looking for it, it sure doesn't jump out at you.
I have to admit I did notice some of the building repetition... but not enough to detract from the fun!
@matta - Oh, cram it. Doing whatever you want with your own stuff is one thing. I've played single-player games with cheats enabled, if anybody's being hurt there, it's me.
But cheating in a multiplayer game is something else entirely - then you are ruining the experience for other people. And yeah, that *is* low.
...hacking for trophies is not the solution. The solution is not obsessing over trophies. Trophies are fun, sure... but they're not the point of the game. If you're not having fun, why do it?
It already has a 'skill points' system that's basically trophies, just not networked. All they'd need to do is modify that code to award trophies instead.
@Cajun - If you're whining now about a bug that lasted 24 hours, that they frankly acknowledged and posted multiple updates about... just *imagine* how put off you'd be if they'd posted *incorrect* information.
Did you know there are seven different models of Fat PS3? In a big company with complex software - which the PS3 firmware definitely is - getting *anything* done in 24 hours takes a miracle. Hell, for many codebases you can't even finish *compiling* the code in under sever...
@Corrwin - It was lower-level than software. There's an ARM CPU in the PS3's front panel, and it has an onboard clock. There was a bug in that hardware that caused the trouble.
The Slims have a more recent stepping of that CPU where the bug was fixed, and so were not affected.
I'd bet that there'll be a fix to prevent this from ever happening again in the next firmware update.
I can confirm that in at least some cases, it's possible to lose - or at least not get - trophies. While playing a game (that silly "Watchmen: The End Is Nigh" beat-em-up) between 10 and 11pm EST on Sunday, I *should* have gotten at least one trophy, for finishing the game. It was not awarded, and the previous trophy information for that game vanished from my PS3.
I fired up the game yesterday evening, after the ApocalyPS3 was over, and the trophy information was still ...
I lost a trophy or two last night in that little "Watchmen: The End Is Nigh" game. I earned them between 10 and 11pm EST. Then I couldn't sign on to sync, and when I went to check, *no* the trophies for that game were listed on my PS3, even the one's I'd earned, same as ascendantofrain.
I earned at least one, possibly two trophies last night. Or I *should* have, but they didn't show up. When I tried to sign into PSN and sync trophies, the sign-in failed, and all the previous trophies for that game were gone. They didn't show up in the list on the PS3 anymore, though they do show up on the web profile.
It's not a *major* problem, but I'm hoping I haven't lost the chance to get those trophies. If I do the same things again and "re-earn" the trophies, wil...
Well, it seems like it might be that *two* internal clocks *disagree* on the date. ( http://games.slashdot.org/a... ) *If* that's the case, it might explain why Slims don't have the problem - a different hardware clock chipset. On the Slims, the hardware and software agree. On the Fatties, they disagree (for now).
Apparently this affects at least the authorization of trophies. Non-trophy game...
We'll see. A lot of people tend to 'overdesign' their sophomore effort. But if it's half as good as Braid, it'll still be pretty good.
We find out at the end of the first game that Cole would have gotten his powers eventually, but the Ray Sphere accelerated that. In inFamous 2, there can be more conduits getting powers as time goes on.
More superpowered enemies, and more variety in the powers (instead of one or two basic conduit types per gang) would be a lot of fun.
