Realistic physics in games will never catch on. Lara Croft would keep falling over forwards.

@AllSystemsRocks - Yeah, the sexes are equal with equal practice, like I said. Kind of the opposite of "some girls perform well but in general guys are ahead", which is what I was objecting to.

Based on that ad for people familiar with 'urban street fashion', it's probably inFamous 2. I know I'll be buying it. Though I probably wouldn't mind a "Sly Collection" either...

@AllSystemsRocks - Two things. First, I read a study where they had boys and girls throw things - and on average, even correcting for strength, the boys threw further and more accurately than the girls. Except for girls who actually played throwing sports like baseball. On a hunch, they had the boys and girls throw with their non-dominant hand. Suddenly everyone was 'throwing like a girl'. It's just practice, that's all.

Second, it turns out that simple statistics can explain mos...

The author points out that manuals don't work for a lot of games, and tutorials work better. Basically, he's saying that the right balance between 'exploratory learning' and 'information dumps' is different from game to game.

The old AvP game was definitely three games in one. The Marine was a standard survival-horror FPS, the Predator was combination stealth/action, and the Alien was very stealthy and had some almost platforming elements. The balance was actually pretty good, too - the Marine was fragile but had the best weapons. The Predator was tough, but for "honor" didn't have overwhelming firepower. The Alien didn't have any ranged weapons, but was fast fast fast, could climb on anything, and didn'...

Still playing it, still having fun. There are a few minor things I'd change in inFamous, but nothing major. What I like is how they *nailed* the control scheme - every power is available all the time, no menus needed. Getting around is great. It is just plain fun to play.

For all I know, Crackdown is even better - never played it. But inFamous is a lot better than "average".

And for just this reason. They're too young to expect them to recognize and handle that kind of crap.

What's not clear is if this twisted $&#* actually physically met 100 kids or if he just chatted with them. Either way it's terrible, but if he managed to physically meet that many kids it's $&#*ing *horrible*.

Sorry, they *did* touch the code for GOW/GOWII to "remaster" them. Probably not in most areas, but you can't just recompile and move from 480p to 720p.

I suspect they've got an emulator that'll handle 80%+ of PS2 code, but there are corner cases and such that don't work well on the PS3, and they recode the game to avoid those problem areas.

"The whole principle is wrong; it's like demanding that grown men live on skim milk because the baby can't eat steak." - Robert A. Heinlein on censorship.

Or, hey, a game-appropriate one: "Beware of he would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."

If you don't want to see it, don't go there. If you don't want your kids to see it - and I don't want mine seeing that stuff at their age - supervise them.

...but the article pulls the estimates for additional sales at a lower price out of... well, nowhere I want to see.

The only way to convince the game industry is with *real* numbers. Like, for example, these:

I'm very close to the Platinum, and I have to disagree. I'll put inFamous away for a while once I've beaten it, but I know I'll pull it out again eventually and play through it again.

There are movies you only need to see once, and others you enjoy watching again from time to time. For me, inFamous is like the latter. But, I can understand those who don't feel that way - the movies I like to return to aren't the ones others would, and vice versa.

Well, I can't say I disagree with much of anything. inFamous is a great game. About the only thing I'd add is that it seems to make the most sense to go through the game first as good, then as evil - especially if you're going for the Platinum. Good on Normal difficulty is about like Evil on Hard, because you have to be careful about civilians when playing the hero.

As you note, you're late to the party, so sadly this probably won't get a lot of attention, but it's a solid, well-...

As has been noted, while this physics SDK doesn't break new ground in terms of what it does, it seems to be awfully impressive in terms of how fast it does it. Properly used, the Cell is a beast for number-crunching. Unfortunately, it's hard to properly use. Wrapping it up in an SDK makes that a lot easier.

Too bad Sony didn't have this SDK out earlier. The SPUs are what sets the PS3 apart, and they should be doing everything in their power to help developers to use them. Properl...

It used to be possible to 'opt-out'.

Ads really bug some people, and Sony needs to offer the option to not be subjected to them, at the very least when you're just using the damn console. There is an option to not jump straight to the 'What's New' section on startup, and I set that right away.

mrv321 - 20-30 years is a long time. I think we'll have pretty convincing bots sooner than that. Clever strategy is difficult to program, and a real-world Terminator is a *long* way off... but for the restricted problem of a particular game, it's manageable. Chess was supposed to be beyond a computer's capabilities, too... but no longer.

(Note, I'm talking specially-written bots that run on a separate machine. It'll be a *long* time before the bots that come with games and run on...

"However, Ubuntu has always had a PPC distro, and most of the basic stuff will work just fine."

In other words, Ubuntu has a whole lot of Linux software compiled for the PowerPC, which runs just fine on the PS3. And the RAM situation's improved significantly, and now Linux can take advantage of most of the RAM in the system. In other good news, the latest Linux kernel has a lot of improvements for low-memory configurations like the PS3, which should boost speed dramatic...

I moved my elderly parents onto Ubuntu two years ago. They were already on Firefox and Thunderbird, so the only thing they remarked on was that the screensavers looked better. And when I come over, I don't have to clean up a bunch of viral crap; the regular security updates cover the whole system and *all* the apps, not just the OS and a couple of apps.

Windows needs just as much support as Linux. Most people can't do it, and have their kid or their cousin or their neighbor who'd...

Not that that will actually happen. But I'd love it.

I've got a 40GB model (now 80GB, I had a drive laying around), and that little Nyko block. That gives it 4 USB ports and an SD/MS reader. Awfully close to an original 60GB model, except for that little matter of PS2 b/c.

I'm still jealous of my nephew with his 60GB, though.
