Aren't you his colleague? Surely you'll be able to pass on the word ;)
I'm not saying anything about the author being a fanboy. I simply remarked that he should've done his research. If you're a colleague, I would definitely encourage the author to write up more opinion pieces, as it was quite well written. But I can't emphasise enough how important it is to do your research before you write your opinion piece, as a poorly researched article gives little credibility to its author :)
I'm talking about the royalties that Activision pays Sony to publish it on their platform. That's where the money comes from. You seem a bit confused about what the term royalties means though, as Activision collects no royalties on CoD at all, because it's their own product. Royalties are expenses paid to use a license, e.g. a license to publish a game on the Playstation 3. Some percentage of the revenue generated by that title is paid to Sony.
As for shareholder...
@Diacy13g
Publisher's don't really care what platform they sell it on, as long as it sells. Call of Duty is a platform seller if it's only on one platform in America, hence software sales would remain largely unaffected.
@Qwark
Call of Duty is a system seller. If people can't buy an Xbox to play it on, they buy a Ps3. The people buying consoles now really don't care much what platform it is on, they pick the cheapest one t...
The one that stands out in particular is Motorola's patent on the H264 codec, e.g. the industry-standard codec used for High Definition video.
There's some others relating to wireless communication and transmission of video content between devices.

Battlefield 3 perhaps? lol.
I think Sony shareholders are plenty happy. Sony doesn't make a lot of money off their consoles - it's the royalties that earns them their cash, and with titles like Call of Duty there's plenty of royalties to be received. Console sales may be lower, but game sales are higher than they were last generation, something which is sure to please their shareholders ;)
I'd imagine victims of attempted murder would disagree.
Like Wallis mentioned, they're different experiences and extremely difficult, if at all possible to quantify, and there's no reason for one being okay in media and the other not.
It could, but plot devices are usually referred back to at later points in the story. I strongly doubt that this particular scene has any relevance to the story, and was used in the trailer more to show what type of people Lara is dealing with, contributing to the overall grittiness and realism of the game.
This is what is called "Blowing things out of proportion". The game shows a realistic portrayal of what would happen in that particular situation. A bunch of men on an isolated island capture a woman. Is it really that far fetched to think they're going to try something? I'd say it's far fetched to say that they aren't going to try something.
Besides, a plot device? Really? A 10 second moment in a 8+ hour experience is considered a plot device?
"motorola wanting 4 billion a year for the patents"
That was only after Microsoft repeatedly refused to pay standard royalties (3.5%) over something that they considered "industry standard", and then sued Motorola over Android phones.
Microsoft started this, not Motorola. Motorola just responded.
If they can't buy an Xbox, they'll buy a Ps3.
But game sales don't increase with any new Xbox sales. Call of Duty sales for instance have remained roughly the same, regardless of the number of Xbox owners.
Besides, be honest.. Call of Duty is Activision's main source of income, and those games aren't very expensive to make any more. An extra 500k sales really wouldn't make much of a difference any more for Activision's financial s...

Activision would not be commercially harmed, as their sales depend on current installed base - not on Microsoft's ability to sell more consoles.
Lol, Halo isn't being hyped enough? Is this guy for real?
Actually, a starting gun is exactly what there is in business. It doesn't reflect market position perhaps, but it does reflect the success the company had with selling their product, as the variable costs only come into play once the product reaches the market.
Market Position on the other hand is better measured by year-on-year sales, and that's the way it's generally done for market analysis.

It's fake..
Regardless of performance, it's new hardware and therefore more expensive. I would anticipate the controller alone to cost Nintendo $100,- or higher, so a $150,- for the console itself isn't too unlikely. This puts the base price at $250,-. Since Nintendo already stated they won't be selling the console at a loss, expect $300 or higher.

lol wut? This Tomb Raider is a story about survival. This Lara is by no means a weak character. I'm quite sure if the character was a guy, these types of articles wouldn't be popping up. I'll go ahead and suggest that this ar...
