That's not a bad number considering it hasn't even released in all territories yet.

Considering the money that the Wii has been printing for Nintendo over the last 3 years I don't think that they need Sony at all. Nintendo needs to stay focused on just what they are doing, not become another tentacle off of a huge electronics conglomerate.

Especially if they put a huge chunk of RAM behind it.

I don't understand how, even if the rumor were true, that it meant failure of any kind for the PS3. And I don't understand the pro-PS3 folks trolling for a flamewar in this topic by calling out other users by name, especially in the Gamer Zone. It's rather pathetic and petty.

Opening them up and modifying the hardware is against Sony's terms of use. Unless there's a special license in place the government doesn't have the right to do that. And they aren't for the troops. The article says that they're going to be added to a superccomputer cluster that already exists.

I'd wondered if that was the case. There are tons of articles where colleges have used retail PS3's to build supercomputer clusters that run Linux, and IBM offers development software for free.

I wouldn't doubt that Sony realized what people were doing with the machine and took the option out so that they didn't lose money for others to save money.

I have a question that the article didn't answer. Are they using development kits like game developers use? Are they using Linux? Most of the supercomputer clusters that I've read about use networked PS3's running Linux. If the government is going to buy 2,200 new PS3's, where would they get them if they use Linux? The slim doesn't support the installation of Linux, so would the government be picking up used consoles?

Just wondering...

You don't have to pay for Xbox Live. I don't pay for it and I'm perfectly happy.

People pay for it because they want it. That should be a good enough reason for anyone who asks.

I remember way back when the PlayStation first debuted the games were touted as 3D and we would be playing in full 3D worlds. Now we're talking about games in stereoscopic 3D. To be honest I'd prefer that they invest the R&D money in improved photorealistic graphics and better framerates and leave gimmicky 3D out of the picture.

Anyone else remember playing Rad Racer on the NES with the red and blue glasses? How long did it take you to turn the 3D off and just play with the ...

Um, you can run Windows on Macs, so that's not real competition anyway. Where I work everyone with a Macbook has a Windows image on their laptop. Microsoft and Apple share market share in the OS market and Microsoft doesn't compete with Apple in the PC hardware market.

Folks praising Google as the big Microsoft competitor need to think twice before putting Google on the white knight pedestal. Google's intention is to glean every piece of personal information they can about you from the information you store on their servers and sell it to advertisers to make money. They aren't some benevolent savior that's going to rescue you from Microsoft's tyranny. They're looking to replace it with something at least equally as nefarious.

Microsoft may be a...

I would buy any game by any developer on any system as long as it is a good game that appeals to me. I don't understand these console warriors and their limited loyalties one bit.

The title doesn't reference either NXE or the marketplace. Not sure how that could have confused you.

Same here.

I think I'll pass on that.

It's just as much a PSN thing as a hardware thing because there has to be a network to support the transport of the voice messages.

I hope they keep online free, too. I'm not interested in paying to play online at all. Beyond that I don't care what they charge for.

I'm curious if Sony can even compete with iTunes and even Amazon.com in the digital music arena. Will Sony only support Sony players?

I wonder what "premium" means? Does that mean that people who pay get access to content before people who don't? Does that mean that people who don't pay never get access to some content? I'd really like to know more about what it means.

I couldn't agree more! This is the kind of comment we need to see more of. All three platforms have their strengths and weaknesses, yet so many people seem to have problems acknowledging this due to blind company loyalty.

I've also purchased every console since the days of the SNES and each piece of hardware has had its specific issues. The comment about the PS2 being the most error-prone hardware of last generation is spot-on. Sure, there will be scores to say "but mine nev...
