In defense of GTA, the role of a criminal is a necessity. The series is built around exploring the criminal underworld of various corrupt cities. There would simply be nothing to any GTA game were you allowed to play the "good guy."

When it all boils down to the basics, GTA is open-world in terms of environment, but very linear in story progression, and you know what-- if that what it takes to build an emotional connection to the characters (as I certainly felt in ...

...I remember some time last year, I commented on how I was expecting the game to receive scores within the low to mid 8's, and how it would be a shame that such scores would alter gamers' perceptions of the game.

Guess I was about as right as Pachter has ever been!

I'm glad to see that people are enjoying Conviction. I only own a PS3 and my gaming PC is not quite up to scratch, so I am not able to play this game unfortunately, but I certainly have enjoyed the series in the past.

As you said, it may not be the most amazing game ever, but the fact that it is enjoyable is all that matters (and belonging to one of the premier stealth series also helps haha). I'm genuinely happy that you guys are getting to enjoy a solid current-gen ...

Shipped figures report the amount of copies sold through to retailers, so from this we can gauge two things:

1)Retailer demand that reflects customer demand
2)The amount of money the game has pulled in, as Ubisoft receives its payments from copies sold to retail, not through to customers (those transactions are 100% income for the retailers themselves).

Those two points should tell you everything you need to know about how well/bad the game is doing. ...

So you are denying that this customer's experience ever happened? You should try to think outside of yourself, and what effects you. Just because you've had good experiences does not mean that everybody else has. In fact, the derision towards Gamestop in general is more than well founded, in my opinion.

Stores do run out of copies (despite your claim otherwise), employees sell opened (and played) games as "new", and there are a host of other issues with Game...

Yes, I've got to say, Walmart has been the place I go to in order to purchase new games this gen. It's a quick and easy in and out, with no overzealous employees hassling you to purchase any extras. And every time I've gone in a couple days after the release of a major game, they've always had copies in stock, which seems to be more than can be said for Gamestop (although this obviously varies from store to store). Overall, I've found Walmart to be a much more relaxed exper...

Thank you both, and yes, I agree that the media plays a large part in promoting fanboyism. Gaming "journalism" nowadays seems to be based more on the ability of the writer to create sensation and gain hits rather than bringing news and facts to those who need it most: us.

"I still criticize mind you but not because I want console A or B to be succesful."

And I commend you for this. Substantial criticism can only come about when the critic ...

I wholeheartedly agree. I remember last summer I spent more time on N4G being a puppet for Sony rather than actually playing the games I was blindly defending.

I was just caught up in it all, in the drive to make sure that my money, that my time, that my experiences were all as pristine as they could be. I wanted to know that I was superior, that my choices were more accurate, astute, and wiser than those of the millions of 360 gamers. And I tell you, it feels good to believe...

Jack Tretton getting down on the advertising goodness... who woulda thunk it? I don't believe I've ever seen a CEO of other gaming companies star in such a hilarious commercial.

Just shows how down-to-earth Tretton is, and how great Sony's marketing and management figures are.

It's nice for a company to be more than just a shadowless figure.

Hopefully they change the color. Whoever thought that white/off-white was a good color for electronics needs to be fired. The thing, as of now, would stick out like a sore thumb in any entertainment center.

But like I said, this is probably just an early build and hopefully the color is changed down the line to something more sleek.

This sounds like an MMO that incorporates zombies/vampires. I would totally be down for that. Imagine Left 4 Dead's human vs. zombie multiplayer gameplay, only on a much grander, open-world scale.

Mmmmmmmmmm.

I'm out of bubbles (stupid new bubble system) so this will be my last post on this topic:

You have two things wrong with your argument. First, you assume right off the bat that GTA V -- 360 or no 360 -- will be some ultra-detailed, 500 square mile, "500 different cars 1000 different pedestrians," game. Even if the game was PS3, or PC, exclusive, Rockstar is still limited by both time and money. You are simply expecting something that is outside the reach of the ...

He is talking about scope, not graphics. The impact (or current lack thereof) that the differences between DVD and Blu-Ray have on the size or details of a game.

And your assumption about Agent is just that: an assumption. We know nothing about the game yet, so let's not start hyping it into the the stratosphere just yet. Unless you want to witness the calamity that was GTA IV all over again.

I don't understand why people are disagreeing with you, Ape. You do have a very valid point, albeit a point that requires some concessions.

Obviously, at the moment, massive game worlds and the such are more than achievable on the 360. Compression techniques are ever advancing, and when even those fail there is the possibility of multiple disks (as much as I hate multiple disks). Maybe not 100% satisfying, but it certainly is possible. The examples of games you mentioned ...

You are correct, I am not from Britain, and I was not aware of these price wars. Definitely sounds nice though, I would be amazed to pick up a newly released game for that nice "discount"!

Well that certainly changes my point about pricing consistency, but I still don't really see how a price war that may have gotten out of hand could lead to a retailer (a major one at that) completely boycotting the game. Failing to stock this game, pricing dispute or no pricin...

If it's a major supermarket here that we are talking about (as the article mentions), then they likely do two things:

a)stock many games
b)keep those games behind a locked glass case

Trust me, a major chain would not miss out on the gaming market. Also, for the chain to be boycotting RDR, they need to stock games, do they not? And I'm sure that many of those games are much more violent than Red Dead Redemption. I honestly can't think of an...

Yeah, but with games such as GTA and Manhunt, retailers do have a sort of moral base for boycotting. Murdering innocents and participating in gruesome executions do not exactly promote the family-friendly image that some retailers are attempting to push.

However... I see nothing with Red Dead Redemption. Yes, there is violence and sex, but this is the wild west we're talking about. Deluding such elements would be taking away from the accuracy (and relevance) of the game. ...

As someone who has never played the original Mafia, I absolutely cannot wait for the second installment to release. I just love the whole premise and setting, in that time period -- it is definitely an area of history that the gaming industry does not explore nearly enough. Because of that, I believe that the Mafia series and L.A. Noire (if it ever releases) are pioneering the sandbox genre even more than comparable games, such as GTA IV.

But I really should play the original...
