Good topic and great question. I wish I knew. Sometimes it looks as if the Internet is indeed overrun with crazies but then you realize that for every person out there willing to spout vitriolic nonsense there are thousands who are indifferent or accepting of divergent opinions.
Lol. There probably is such a thing as a box fetish.
I don't know where this rumor came from but it is a bit premature. If this rumor was born in response to the tepid performance of the Wii U at retail I would suggest that the pundits and commenters alike do a little research into Nintendo's financials.
Nintendo is very solvent at the moment and still has a profitable 3DS business. They are cash rich and run no risk of bankruptcy in the near term. Their reported losses can be attributed mostly to R&D cost for th...
I see the inclusion of the headset as a positive. Who wouldn't? As far as their other changes I see them as serving the greater gaming good. The larger consensus was neither interested in nor prepared for what MSFT was proposing for the future of their platform. If they moved forward in defiance of public sentiment and outcry they would have experienced unmitigated defeat at the hands of Sony. I tell you now that we don't want that. We need all 3 players in this game of thrones...
It isn't that much bigger than the 360's as far as I can tell. It is also just as unsightly. Jeesh! But I'll live with it if it helps keep the box cool.
Cool. I like how they've incorporated some basic controls into the connector hub thing.
It sux that all of those touted features are indeed accessible only through a subscription but it is up to the consumer if they want to pay the fee to use those features or not. I argue that all of those additional features are extraneous to the console's central purpose -- playing games. Detractors will complain about MSFT "forcing" them to pay extra for things like Netflix but as far as I've seen no one is making anyone do anything under duress.
We have ...
It would be cool to play Metroid on MSFT or Sony hardware but I wouldn't want to do so at the detriment of such a storied and beloved company as Nintendo. I really don't know if becoming a third party dev would solve their problems in the long run.
Yes there are public perception and marketing issues with the Wii U, but those issues pale in comparison to the problems they are experiencing with their software. Extremely prolonged development cycles that suffer fro...
Yeah. The always online thing really got my goat but equally irritating was their policy on used games and DRM. I do not buy or sell my games used nor do I borrow games from or lend games to acquaintances. So the issue didn't pertain to me directly. I just abhorred the precedent that would have been set had MSFT been successful in implementing their plans. I've gamed for a long time and I just couldn't imagine not owning my copy of my physical game I purchased with my money....
The X1 has redeemed itself in my eyes and has made the next generation a more expensive situation for me. Like a lot of folks I was only going to purchase the PS4 after MSFT initially revealed their sh!tty policies. Now that they have reversed most everything that was offensive I will be purchasing both...not necessarily at launch but before the conclusion of the next gen.
No one knows. I see it as a generational issue. Right now the larger gaming demographic is comprised of males 18 to 35. Is that range weighted heavier on the lower or the upper end? That is the most important question because it determines how fast tablets and other convergent platforms will erode console market share.
If there are more 18 year old gamers who have a greater affinity for mobile gaming, and as the generational shift occurs we will see consoles gradually b...
If you are talking about the Forward Unto Dawn series I did indeed watch and enjoy it. The story was not focused on MC but instead on commander Lasky. What I am talking about is a full feature 2 hour movie directed by a JJ Abrams, Joss Whedon, Neil B. or Peter Jackson focused on MC himself. I would even take Michael Bay. I would like something more than a webisode.
In my perfect, alternate universe he would have done both movies. District 9 is an excellent movie but I still have my fingers crossed for the film adaptation of Halo.
People who would have stood to gain from X1's old policies have been extremely vocal as of late. The Cliffy Bs, Jesse Schelles and the like are pouring out of the woodwork to admonish and analyze gamer response to MSFT's DRM visions for X1. Their tone has been antagonistic and their regard for our sensibilities has been nonexistent. According to them we don't know what is good for us. We are irrational and entitled and we should let others determine our path since they are inn...
I guess I just can't excuse their ineptitudes. When I pose the question why, again, I am being hyperbolic for effect. I am always wary of projects slipping into the aether. Id is a longstanding and storied developer and I just expected more. I guess I have no other option but to be patient. I just hope this doesn't go the route of Half Life ep 3.
My short and long answer is no and yes. No. I don't play multiplayer even after the single player campaign in shooters. Yes. Only for the sake of what appears to be the consensus out there. The market has determined that multiplayer is integral to what is now considered a complete game.
I sensationalized my response for the sake of effect. I know what, when and where QuakeCon is and I am fully aware of the protracted development tailspin Doom is currently in.
The meat of my argument pivots on the fact that Id is inconsistent and disorganized. Again, why haven't we seen anything of Doom 4? Carmack waxes prophetic every year about the future of gaming but barely contributes. Doom 3, Rage, uh...9 years and they only have 2 games to show for it. What Ca...
A very well articulated analysis.
Knack was never really my bag of lunch so I wrote it off from the start. It could have a lot of appeal for youngsters though. We need more family friendly games that the kids can enjoy.
Look for a Kinect-less sku before Christmas. MSFT knows that the final barrier to entry is the price and that Sony is in a better position because of the disparity. We might even see an X1 for sub $399! Can you imagine? It has been a weird and confusing journey thus far but we are slowly getting to where we need to be.
