It probably also has to do with the fact that the game doesn't push modern GPUs very hard.
This theoretical 6970 would not be two GPUs, but a single die that includes all of the shaders, TMUs, ROPs, that would normally be in two Radeon 6870s, so Crossfire isn't even being used.
If the 6970 is essentially two 6870s on the same die, much like the 5870 was two 5770s on the same die, the 6970 should beat the GTX 580 by a fair margin.
I've seen rumors that it will have a 512-bit memory bus. With 1.2GHz GDDR5 that would be over 300GB/s of memory bandwidth, which would be absolutely insane.
I like how they're not announcing a product, but call the GPU they're not announcing the fastest GPU on the planet.
THIS JUST IN, ATI SAYS NEW UNANNOUNCED GPU IS EVEN FASTER THAN NVIDIA'S UNANNOUNCED GPU.
Marvell makes ARM processors, so even if it is a quad core it will still not be close to as powerful as the CPUs in the PS3 and 360.
Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Deferred rendering allows for many dynamic lights to be on screen without hurting performance. Traditional hardware anti-aliasing does not work, but there are some pretty decent work-arounds available.
No way this is happening; we'll be lucky if it's a 720p display, because even that would already be quite a bit higher than the resolution of the iPhone 4 display.
It's pretty amazing that we're even having this discussion considering how poorly the PS3 launch went. I'm glad to see Sony was able to turn things around before it was too late.
Hopefully they don't try to force a new HDTV on you with it, as their employees are on commission.
Microsoft has never been an innovative company. Commodore and IBM had better operating systems, but Microsoft marketed theirs a lot better.
So reporting 7.12 billion in operating income for Q3 is a sign of a dying company? What is happening to Sony then?
Apple is trying to get into the game market with the iPhone / iPad, and will likely join the market in another way sooner or later.
Holy shit if this is true; is the PS3 seriously less than 1 million units behind the 360?
Back in the day I would have said id software, but today the only developers that seem to be truly loyal to the PC are Valve and Blizzard.
There are smart phones with more than 512MB of RAM but that doesn't meant they are more powerful than the PS3/360.
@ BaneWilliams
The PS3 has 256MB of XDR dedicated to the CPU and 256MB of GDDR3 dedicated to the GPU, where as the 360 has 512MB of RAM that can be divided however the developer wishes amongst the CPU and GPU.
Yeah, there's definitely something wrong with their PS3 screenshots. Some of them look alright, but others are just completely blurry in comparison to the PC and 360 versions.
Yeah, I hated Steam in 2004 when Half-Life 2 came out, but after a few years it really started to hit its stride.
Uhh.... what? Rendering resolution has absolutely nothing to do with the disc medium. If you're talking about texture resolution you could fit higher resolution textures on a Blu-ray, but it's likely that RAM limitations will be an issue first.
Even a couple of GTX 480s in SLI will struggle with ray-tracing, and those are 3 billion transistor GPUs!
"Will you ever make a proper sequel to UT2004?"
