How the hell is Doom not on that list? You know, the game that basically created the genre? Uncharted is a great series but it didn't exactly change gaming, while Modern Warfare doesn't belong at all.

The NGP will not use a 2GHz ARM Cortex A9 quad core, as the 2GHz frequency is the maximum recommended speed by ARM. On a 40nm process the CPU cores alone would have a TDP of around 4W, which is way too high for a handheld. With the GPU it would probably be 6-8W, which would make battery life extremely short, and the device would get quite warm.

The NGP's CPU will likely run at 800MHz to 1GHz, which would still make its CPU around 8x-10x faster than the one used in the 3DS...

It doesn't go to 720p, but varies from 1280x1080 to 1920x1080 depending on the render load.

Also, the game obviously has to be changed because the NGP uses ARM while the PS3 uses PowerPC, meaning that it will at the very least need to be recompiled.

I personally dislike most forms of piracy, especially game piracy, but I also believe attempts to fight it are pointless and actually hurt legitimate customers more.

@ Persistantthug

Single-precision floating point operations are only one metric of performance. A Core i7 980X would beat the PS3's version of the Cell by a large margin when using double-precision, because the PS3's version is just terrible at anything but single-precision.

Even the newer PowerXCell 8i only has a peak of around 102.4GFLOPs when using double precision, and it's multiple times faster than the PS3 version in double-precision opera...

Actually Pandamobile, Killzone 3 does not use the same 3D trick that is being used in Crysis 2, but instead actually renders twice as many frames at 640x716 with MLAA and a slight reduction in polygon count. In 2D mode it is rendered at normal 1280x720 with MLAA.

While the Turbo Express had a better screen, the Lynx had a lot more hardware support for things like parallax scrolling, sprite scaling, and tiling, so it was in a lot of ways more powerful. It also had a much better sound processor and was capable of displaying more colors simultaneously.

The TurboGrafix 16/PC Engine/ Turbo Express did have a much better library of games though.

While it would make developing games for both platforms easier, as powerful as ARM Cortex A9 is for a handheld, it is really meant for low-power portable devices.

The Cell processor is already well over 2x as powerful as the quad core ARM Cortex A9 they plan on using in the PSP2 due to the PS3's much higher clockspeed and 7 SPEs. When it comes to the GPU they're closer but the RSX is still more powerful.

The PSP2 isn't really designed to compete...

It probably looks worse than the 360 version, and definitely looks worse than a big PS3 exclusive shooter releasing a month earlier.

Yeah, the Lynx was extremely powerful for its time. They were even developing a version of Alien vs Predator for it that was actually in first person, but it was never finished.

Yeah, most Neo Geo games were way more expensive than SNES games because they were made in more limited numbers, and they held a lot more space than any SNES cartridge ever did. The last official Neo Geo game to release was Samurai Shodown V Special in 2004 which was a 708Megabit(88.5Megabyte) cartridge, and sold for roughly $360. In comparison the largest SNES game was only 48Megabit(6Megabytes).

They might bring out a version of the PSP2 that looks like the Go eventually, but they'll likely need to wait for a manufacturing process shrink or two before that happens.

The original PSP could do it, so why shouldn't this be able to? It would be an awesome extra feature, especially considering how powerful this device really is. It could almost replace your home console and be used with a Dual Shock 3 via Bluetooth.

I wouldn't mind having one of my favorite franchises of the generation available on a handheld.

I agree; I've tried to game on my laptop while tethered to my android smart phone and the ping is just awful. It would still be a nice little internet device though, especially if the browser is designed well.

The device also has Wi-Fi so you will not have to pay for a cellular contract to use the internet features. The 3G option is there to use when Wi-Fi is not available, if you don't mind paying extra for the service.

This CPU isn't like a Core i5 or i7 using Turbo Boost. That frequency range is static and was released by ARM as the possible clock speeds that ARM Cortex A9 could run in the right situations. The PSP2 version will likely run between 800MHz-1GHz.

I didn't disagree with you by the way. Anyway, the PSP2 will be insanely powerful for a hand held.

Yeah, the authors of the article definitely don't know what they're talking about. The vast majority of PS3 and 360 games are rendered natively in 720p, but a few games do support a native 1080p output. The 360's pixel fill rate is 4GPixel/s, roughly the same as the PS3's, not the 16GPixel/s they claim in the article.

Expecting the PSP2 to output natively in 1080p when it's built in display is 960x544 doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In fact, when pl...

The PSP2 is not going to be as powerful as the PS3, but considering the form factor it is still going to be an extremely impressive device. It should easily blow away it's competition, ie the 3DS and iPhone but comparing it to a home console simply isn't fair because a handheld has much stricter power and heat requirements.

I understand that the PSP2 CPU is four ARM Cortex A9 cores, but that doesn't change anything I said. Also, the 800MHz-2GHz frequency is the frequency range suggested by ARM. It is likely that the PSP2's CPU will run in the 800MHz-1GHz range, still making it 2x faster than even the newest Tegra 2 powered smart phones.
