Have you ever looked at compression algorithms? Do you honestly think that Nintendo has it all over other developers?

The following is an intro on compression algorithm types. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Look at most Nintendo games they are mainly very cartoony in style. A cartoony style is easier to compress than if the style was photorealistic. This is not to ...

Bluray disks are very cheap in OEM quantities (about a dollar USD for 25G) compared to say a 16GB or 32GB MicroSD card and one very import factor to consider is that hard disk drives have a performance about on par with a MicroSD card and as far as cost per gigabyte there is no contest.

You could even look at solid state disks which can easily be installed internally in the PS4 or externally for both the PS4 and XB1 are still considerably cheaper (cost per gigabyte) than M...

The OEM cost for a 25GB (single layer) Bluray disk is in the region of one dollar (USD) and about 50% to 80% more for a 50GB (dual-layer) Bluray disk.

Note: The following are eBay (US) prices for the public https://www.ebay.com/b/Verb... manufacturers will pay considerably less.

Most games for the PS4 and XB1 will either fit on a...

Simple answer, "cost".

Wow a 512GB MicroSD card for the Switch. That's strange considering the largest capacity MicroSD card to date is 400GB.

I am still waiting for SSD's to drop significantly in price and they have over five times the performance of most class 10 MicroSD cards. You can even get SSDs that have a 15TB capacity but they are not cheap.

Well, Zelda Breath of the Wild had a download size of 13.4GB which is over 50% of the total storage capacity of the Switch's internal memory.

Note The Switch has 32GB of storage of which approximately 26GB is usable for games.

Well if you hit your MicroSD card with a hammer what do you expect. 😎

I thought "Oh more click bate" but was pleasantly surprised.

1. EVOLVE
2. BATTLEBORN
3. FOR HONOR
4. TITANFALL
5. BRINK
6. LAWBREAKERS
7. THE DIVISION
8. POKEMON GO
9. NO MAN’S SKY

Basically, the article is on one page and appears to give "fair" pros, cons and current status of the games.

How about Final Fantasy 4 at 1.5MB or Final Fantasy 5 at 2.5MB or Final Fantasy 6 at a huge 4.0MB.

But let us compare apples and apples how about Mario RPG at a staggering 4.0MB. 😎

Basically, MicroSD cards come in capacities of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB etc although I am ignoring older capacities under 1GB which today no one would consider worth buying. Even capacities of less then 4GB are considered obsolete since it is not really that economical to make them.

If you have a portable device then solid state storage is preferred because of its robustness and small size compared to spinning storage, however. The downside is the fact th...

A double density DVD (9.4GB) yes but not a single density DVD.

Rather a pointless comparison since the Switch only has 32GB internal storage (26GB usable) and can take only MicroSD cards. Yes DVD's are cheaper than MicroSD cards but are limited to 9.4GB while MicroSD cards can currently store up to 400GB although these are expensive. A major advantage of MicroSD cards is the fact that they are smaller than DVD's and much more robust.

The download size PS4 of Axiom Verge (released 31st March 2015) for the PS4 is about 400MB, however, the game is also cross-buy with the PSVita which means you can play the game on the PS4 and the Vita for a single purchase.

Currently, the game is being sold on PSN (Australia) for about $27 AUD ($21.60 USD) but is fairly often sold at a discount.

The Switch's version will also be sold on MicroSD card which means it will be much more expensive (Pre ord...

In what way is this a game changer?

It is pretty easy and relatively cheap to either increase your storage internally (PS4) or externally (PS4 and XB1) or just remove the old games you are not going to play anymore and replace the storage space you freed up with newer games. This is known in the IT industry as housekeeping.

How are the PS4 and XB1 in different leagues to PCs? As I have said previously they all have the same X86_64 architecture and the XB1 does run a Windows 10 operating system which is run on about 30% of all PC's (Windows 7 is run on almost 50%). The PS4 does not run a Microsoft operating system but instead runs a variant of FreeBSD which is based on Unix of which Linux is an offshoot.

I actually have a fairly powerful desktop PC which I b...

It may come as a surprise to you but you can compare the PS4 and XB1 to a PC since they all have X86_64 architecture. Sure a high-end PCs will outperform the PS4 and XB1 but most cheaper PC's sold today don't even come close to the overall performance those consoles.

Don't believe me. Go to a store that sells PC's and look at the sales lineup. Most are laptops and while you can get laptops that are powerful (eg Alienware) they are expensive.

Should be interesting to see the price of the Switch version of Doom since you can get the PS4 version quite cheaply now and that is not second hand. In Australia, I can get Doom for $40 AUD ($32 USD) via PSN or on special (two for $40 AUD) at JB Hi FI at $20 AUD ($16 USD) on Bluray media.

Doom for the PS4 and XB1 was released 13th May 2016 so for most consoles and Microsoft Windows it is an old game although IMHO it is a surprisingly fun game and that is coming from someon...

The last thing we need is more software patents.

Anyway, it would not be in Microsoft's interest to try to patent a concept which is has been around for years when you have companies like IBM that can really hurt Microsoft if they decide to bring out their patent portfolio.

There are plenty of games available for the PS4 that don't require an internet connection although there are games that do have internet features that allow you the option of playing the game without an internet connection (eg, Dark Souls 2 & 3, Bloodborne).

For those games that do require an internet connection be it online only or features, you will need a PS+ account. There are exceptions to this such as Neverwinter which is online only but does not require you t...
