Basically Sony's perfect game was to basically not change anything except they did state that you would need a PS+ subscription to play on-line, although they did offer incentives for people to do this.
Microsoft proposal of Kenect requirement and draconian DRM coupled with their at the very least confusing second hand policy did not sit well with most gamers.

"Much prefer the larger box as cooling is a nightmare on ps4."
Where did that come from. I have a PS4 (CUH-1202A) and the only way I can hear the fan is to actually turn off my sound system and put my ear to the PS4 and even then it is exceptionally quiet.
When I play a game my PS4 consumes about 70W to 80W so obviously the heat generated must be exhausted and while the top of my PS4 does get warm, but not hot so the e...
The only thing missing from the UI on the PS4 is a games directory or folder. It would also be a nice but not essential feature (see my next paragraph) to have the last two or three games played displayed like the PS3 does.
Still you can always use voice commands to select games and other features if you plug a microphone into your dual shock 4 and there is no excuse for not doing this since all PS4's come with one.
I won't deny that the original PS4 controllers had the problem of the rubber on the sticks peeling off, however those controllers were under warranty (most countries one year) and you could have got them replaced for free.
The last generation was basically a two horse race since both the PS3 and XBox360 supported high definition TV's while the Wii only supported standard definition and therefore was mainly ignored by many third party developers.
Granted for consoles shifted the XBox360 won in the US and the UK but world wide the PS3 actually won although not by a huge margin.
Backwards compatibility is a value added feature that makes a console more attractive to gamers who are looking to upgrade and still have their last generation games.
It must be noted that neither the PS4 or the XB1 are backwards compatible, the only way they can play previous generation games (ie: PS2 on PS4 and XBox360 on XB1) is by emulation.
Providing the ability to play previous selective games while a value added feature does not have the same attractio...
@skratchy
>> Wii was number one
The Wii was rather unusual for that generation.
Keeping things in perspective, the PS3 and XBox360 were high definition consoles that could support 1080p, the Wii could only support standard definition.
While the Wii did shift the most consoles it really was not supported by third party developers.
For Nintendo to bring out the NX this year would be a slap in the face to those people who purchased a WiiU.
Imagine if Microsoft or Sony came out and stated they are going to bring out the XBox? and PS5 in early 2017 how do you think people who have already got PS4's and/or XB1's would feel.
Yes I am aware some would think this great but they would be in the minority.
I don't think it is a matter of waiting for the Nintendo NX, for me it is what can the NX offer me over my PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and even my Gamecube games.
Please don't say Mario <something>, I have never really liked those games even from the NES day although to be fair I do have a soft spot for Zelda and Metroid games.
No Nintendo device has ever used BluRay.
While I do agree I do think the word "liar" is more appropriate.
My PS4 is just less than one meter from my ears and the only way I can hear the fan when playing a game is to turn off my speakers and actually put my ears to the case and even then the fan is barely audible. I do have excellent hearing.
I do have the latest CHU-1202A model PS4 which from what I have gathered consumes less power then the original PS4.
One additional point is that if you installed your game from media (ie: BluRay) you will hear the whine of th...
Still got my backwards compatible PS3 which I brought at launch and it still works although it does pump out allot of heat (about 140W when playing a game) but then again it always did that.
I always put my PS3 in a well ventilated cabinet otherwise the heat build up will eventually cause the electronics to fail. Even with my PS4 which can draw around 80W when playing a game you still need to make sure that the heat generated can be exhausted.
When did Sony or Microsoft for that matter promise backwards compatibility for the PS4 and XB1 at launch? Answer, they didn't.
Two years after both consoles launched Sony offers selective PS2 emulation and Microsoft offers Selective XBox360 emulation. Both of these are a value added service but they are not essential although to a vocal minority they maybe perceived as such.
BC IMHO is a value added feature not a selling feature.
I do have some of those games that I already play on my PS3 so I am not really that interested in re buying them to play on my PS4.
One game I don't have is Dark Souls 2 which I was actually going to get for my PS4 however I need a PS+ subscription to get the network features. Of course I could get it for my PS3 and then that issue goes away.
The reason I don't have a PS+ subscription is that I would rarely make use of it since I have never been a fan...
I have over sixty PS2 games however the games that I have for the PS4 take precedence.
Not only that there are more games coming for the PS4 that I would also like to play. I even have PS3 games that I have not yet finished so PS1 and PS2 games that I would like to replay have a much lower priority.
Even if I could play my PS2 games on my PS4 for free I would still prefer playing PS4 games although I do get a nostalgia kick every few months, however consider...
For people who already own PS2 games and want to play those games on their PS4 then I guess you only have two choices , pay for the digital download or just play your owned game on the device that will play them.
Yes it would be nice if I could download those PS2 games I already own like a normal digital download or rip (could be a legal issue here) and authenticate by putting my original media in like you now do with the PS4 install by media. Oh well I still have my working ...
You can improve the performance of software in how it actually integrates with the hardware and other software. What you can't do is improve the performance of the hardware without changing it.
The only physical entity on both the PS4 and XB1 that can be improved on is the internal storage device and even then it will only improve the load times of games.
DirectX12 is Microsoft proprietary software that may be more efficient in the way it talks to the har...
No thanks. The only time why I play the odd game (Solitaire or Angry Birds) on my mobile phone is when I can't sit down in front of a larger screen such as my HDTV or Monitor. Basically hand held and mobile gaming has zero appeal for me.
Anyway if the XBox brand died there is always Nintendo's as well as Sony's consoles and in the unlikely event that they disappeared then there is always the PC.
