Cartridges are what is called an active device while disks such as CD/DVD/BD are what is called a passive device and are much cheaper to produce than an equivalent sized cartridge.

The PS4 and XB1 basically use the BD reader to load the game media on to an internal hard disk (5400 rpm being the default) and has read speeds of approximately 80 to over 100MB/sec. You can even install a game via the internet called a digital download.

For the so called Nintendo ...

It does not matter if you are gaming on a PC, PS4 or an XB1 fully installing a game is going to take time to install to your hard drive.

How long does this take?

For a gaming PC the main storage can be a Solid State Disk or a Hard Disk and your main method of install for the software will be the internet (digital download) or CD/DVD/BD (media) and your installation time will be dependent on the your slowest install mechanism.

As an example, ...

@ShadowKnight

An SSD is incredibly fast and averages about 520MB/sec for both read and write although it is so much more expensive than a Hard Disk Drive of the same capacity.

When installing a game you are limited by the install mechanism be it the BluRay drive (approx 27MB/sec), your network speed in the case of digital downloads and the write performance of your storage. If you have an SSD as you main storage device your install limits would be your BD dri...

That configuration will work but you still need to factor in the cost of the operating system unless you are into piracy or are using Linux, a decent keyboard and mouse as well as a decent controller.

Please don't tell me that you can get a Kbd&Mouse cheap since any serious gamer would laugh in your face for saying that.

A 1TB 7200rpm disk, is not bad performance wise for a HDD but you are going to rapidly run out of room so you really need to conside...

Basically a PC consists of CPU, Memory, Motherboard to suite, Storage (usually a hard disk drive and possibly a solid state drive for the system disk), case, power supply, Graphics card, Keyboard and mouse, monitor and let us not forget the operating system which for most people will be Microsoft Windows which is also an additional cost.

Like it or not you do need to factor a monitor in your costs and if you are serious about gaming it would want it to be larger than 24"...

Yes rinse and repeat seem to be the norm for many games today. What is even worse though is Pay To Win which we are now seeing in many smart phone games fortunately there is not much of that in console games yet.

I don't mind some DLC, providing it is worth it and even some micro-transactions which I never purchase anyway.

@mikeslemonade

The GTX970 prices have dropped dramatically and are around the US$300 mark while the new GTX1080 is in the order of 3 to 5 times that price.

Still if you have the money and providing you have a motherboard that supports it, a power supply that can handle it as well as a monitor that can display it's output properly, go for it.

Cards? Oh no please, next they will throw in micro-transactions and pay to win to make it unique - oh wait.

On a lighter note, how can you make an FPS unique other than go there and while you are at it kill everything along the way? :-)

Use your PC to rip the misc to mp3 then put the files onto a USB stick and you can play it on your PS4 via the media player.

If you installed the latest PS3 update you cannot run Linux. Then again why would you want to since you can pretty well install Linux on most PC's.

I actually use a seven year old Laptop as my test-bed for when I get the latest release of Linux (approx every six months) and it runs much better than if you installed the PS3 distribution.

If you had a YLOD on your PS3 then it may be a good idea to replace the thermal paste on your PS3's heat sink (cost ...

The YLOD on the PS3 is normally an indication that the the machines is overheating.

Obviously a quick solution is to vacuum out the air intake however that is going to be a temporary fix if it works.

Basically if your PS3 is more than five years old if you see the YLOD then it is better to change the thermal paste on your heat-sink.

Changing the thermal paste is actually quite cheap since a tube of non-conductive paste (eg: Arctic Ice) is a ...

I really do (still playing) like The Witcher 3 but too much of a good thing can get old quickly. I would prefer new intellectual property such as "Steampunk" which being new may or may not be successful (hopefully it will be).

Unfortunately I do see allot of developers stick to basically the same theme rather than try for new IP with it's inherent risks.

Rinse, repeat seems the safer and in many respects the more profitable way to go and as long...

I definitely liked Kingdoms of Amalur it was one of the most colourful games I have ever played and combat was a blast. Being capped at level 40 was a let-down but then again by the time you got to level 40 you had pretty much finished the game.

I would be very surprised if anyone wanted to take the chance in making KoA2 since "38 Studios" went bankrupt.

I did like Dragons Dogma for the fighting and the story but most of the quests were really boring and please don't let me get started on those stupid micro-transactions.

I rather liked the expansion though.

All in all I would most likely buy DD2.

I do have to ask what difficulty level were you playing on and did you at certain times reduce the difficulty for some tougher enemies?

The difficulty levels are:

Just the Story! - Very easy
Story and Sword! - Normal (actually easy)
Blood and Broken Bones! - Hard (sort of normal)
Death March! - Harder Still

Playing on "normal" is really fairly easy and you do level up faster so it wo...

The only Nintendo consoles that are backwards compatible are the Wii and the WiiU and they are only backwards compatible with the GameCube although the WiiU can play Wii games as well.

Prior to the GameCube all Nintendo console used propitiatory cartridges which were not backwards compatible.

If the Nintendo NX console has different architecture to the Wii and/or WiiU and then there is a very good chance that it will not be backwards compatible.

A controller that accepts a CD? Well if it was the size of a the PHP or Wii mini-disk maybe but lets be practical here how much do you honestly think a controller like that would cost?

Why not be able to stick in an microSD card? It only needs to fit in a tiny slot but again do you honestly think Nintendo would do this.

Sorry you can not beat the so called standard controller for ease of use although for some dedicated PC gamers you can get a mouse that has o...

I have logged hundred of hours in Skyrim although when you get the best armour and weapons all of them with a double enchantment you pretty much have the game beat. It is at this stage it is definitely worth increasing your difficulty level.

With TW3 you really don't appreciate the game until you play on the the higher difficulty settings although reducing your difficulty is a bit of a cop-out. Still those who do this are just cheating themselves. Personally if I see an e...

I think anyone would be pretty arrogant to say you have not played TW3 since you obviously have, however what difficulty settings did you play on?

Playing on the first two difficulty levels is far too easy and your really can't appreciate the game until you either play "Blood and broken bones" or "Death March" with Witcher 2 settings set to "yes".

Changing your difficulty to a lower one (Skyrim and Oblivion allow this as wel...

I have played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne as well as the earlier king's Field series.

Playing The Witcher 3 on the harder difficulty settings such as "Blood and broken bones" and "Death March" forces you to think allot more strategically and in many way the fighting is similar and just as hectic as the Souls series and Bloodborne.

Playing TW3 on easier difficulty settings is effectively as waste of time since you can ...
