"So obviously 24+8 < 48 right? Yes and No... Vertex operations include translating, rotating and scaling the vertex arrays passed in. Thats all. Everything else is reliant on the Pixel shaders."
The PS3 can use the SPU's for some vertex operations. The pixelshaders of the RSX are supposedly faster/better than the one in Xenos making a direct comparrison of numbers impossible.
"Another thing that the 360 has going for it that the RSX doesn't is the share...
but it is a fact that the console of choice in Europe is NOT the X360. Less than 2 mill. sold in its first year in Europe is actually very poor performance –- probably the worst first year for a supposed market leader console in decades...
The source is GameInformer... Why not post that instead of an english babelfish translation of a dutch translation of the original english source?
The X360 isn't doing too well here in Europe... Less than two million sold in an entire year without competition. It doesn't look too promising for the X360 no matter how the PS3 is priced.
Europe is PlayStation country and will probably continue to be so for the rest of this "next-generation".
the direct competitor for the X360 game Rainbow Six would be Rainbow Six on the PS3... not Resistance...
Oh and... Two things on your review scores:
1. When the X360 launched people were in awe of the graphics -- now people are getting used to them. I doubt most of the X360 launch games would receive the same reviews today.
2. If you compare the same sources reviews of the games (instead of including every fansite review out there), you'll find tha...
for you to just provide a link..
And I don't see your point, as it doesn't mention anything about proprietary peripherals.
My guess is, you are trying to derail the discussion with completely unrelated arguments -- what a pathetic thing to do...
I'll play along for a minute, although this discussion should've been on the thread for that article...
1. He looks at the PS3 from a X360 gamers perspective (which most are not).
2. H...
- Harddisk - proprietary MS
It doesn't matter that the actual disc is standard, as you can't install it. The casing is there to make you pay the MS tax. And btw, your warranty is not voided if you install another one on the PS3 -- the instructions are in the manual and an installer is provided.
- Webcam - proprietary MS
Yep, it is proprietary. You can't use any other USB webcam. MS has made sure you can use it with other MS products (like XP) but I can't use it wi...
Joystiq has got a point.
Sony are the ones giving actual choice here... And yeah, you do get a headset with the Premium edition X360, but it is proprietary.
In fact the whole X360 system is designed for creating extra revenue streams for MS:
- Harddisk - proprietary MS
- Webcam - proprietary MS
- Headset - proprietary MS
- Rechargeable batterypacks - not standard
- Online gaming - gotta pay MS
- View photos - buy ...
Having the PS3 without Blu-ray would be sort of like having the X360 without that expensive Xenos... Ofcourse, being biased to some degree as you are, you would defend that by saying that Xenos is an integral part of the console -- strangely the exact same argument Sony and PS3 fanboys use for Blu-Ray...
It's not mysteriously gonna be taken out of the PS3, so lets find a new subject please...
I believe we can safely assume MS has weighed the benefits up against the cons of the VMX-128 extensions and registers, and concluded that it was worth the effort for games.
MS are not stupid either, you know :-)
To me it all comes down to the different strategies of MS and Sony and it shows through their hardware decisions.
MS wants to gain marketshare fast, and has chosen to go with a cheaper console with a smaller possible lifespan -- they have afterall mo...
That is just plain silly... Devs have had final dev kits for X360 for almost 15 months now, while some devs have complained they haven't gotten final dev kits for PS3 before august this year.
Secondly it has been reported for all of the games you've mentioned, that lead development has been on X360 (obviously because they didn't have final dev kits for PS3).
Thirdly, don't start with the delay thing, since, as just mentioned, final dev kits weren't being shipped ...
Seing as you can only squeze about 20 hours of gametime out of the X360 controller on rechargeable batteries I can''t really see your point about BT being hard on batteries -- maybe that is because BT was designed for the mobile space with limited battery?
Btw MS has previously stated that they decided to go with their own 2.4GHz standard because of a lag-problem with BT. It appears Sony has solved that one...
And finally... lets do a quick calculation... 10 hour...
Get serious... The IBM link provided should give you a hint that the SPE's are some powerfull beasts, and in the tests measured in the article, would beat the Xenon CPU hands down... Why?
1. The article compares one SPE with the PowerPC970 -- a processor which most people would agree is superior to the PPU's of both Cell and Xenon. It concludes that 1 (one) SPE is roughly 1.25 time faster than the PPC970 at that specific test.
2. Most, if not all people, would ag...
If you actually paid attention and read the analysis you would know that the Blu-ray drive is only around 15% of the cost... And then you would have to add the cost of a DVD drive.
If we were to assume Sony would take as much of a hit using a DVD drive (which is unlikely, as they don't see the same profit potential in the long run without Blu-ray), they might be able to get the MSRP down to approx. $450/$550...
Kind of ruins the whole "Blu-ray is what makes ...
1. Sony has "lost" quite a bit of money on PS3 R&D for the last couple of years, and still has managed to make a healthy profit. They are not going to go bankrupt even if the PS3 did fail miserably.
2. Blu-ray is as close to being a winner as it is possible before it is actually decided. Which format will win? The technically superior format with the most installed players and a large majority of industry support, or the one with slim movie studio support, second ...
Not likely.. according to 1UP they used 10-12 hours on first playthrough, and after that they could finish the game in less than 6 hours...
"Anything still comes down to the threads."
Actually what makes it difficult to code for this "next-gen" of consoles is the multiple threads. Multiple threads on a single core only exist as a means to try and maximize utilization of the cores available CPU power -- you know, when one thread stalls or waits, the other one takes over. This is a great concept, but never as good as having separate cores.
"PS3 CPU has 2 main threads. Thus a bottleneck...
There is a slight difference as R:FoM so far has scored an average of 9.14 making it a "great" game, while PDZ according to GameRankings scored an average of 8.08 making it a "slightly above average" game. See the difference?
But let's just do a quick recap of reviews so far:
Resistance:
IGN - 9.1 of 10
1UP - 8.5 of 10
GameInformer - 9.5 of 10
GameBrink - 91 of 100
GameZone - 9.5 of 10
---
Avg. so far - 9.14 of 10
Gears:
Avg. so far according to GameRankings.com - 9.4 of 10
So that is so far a difference of 0.3 in reviews... Not too bad for a launch title.
Now, you've been comparing R:FoM with CoD3 for a loo...
But a bit wasted.
The X360 hasn't been in short supply in Europe since the beginning of this year, and therefore the slow uptake can't be blamed on supply issues.
2 million console sold a year after launch is a historical low. Sales wise the X360 hasn't lived up to its hype in Europe, there are no two ways about it.
As a true american ofcourse you don't play game franchises developed by us European footbal-crazies, like Hitman (danish), Battlefield...
