Performance wise there are two differences:

1. Blu-Ray has bigger capacity per layer compared to HD-DVD and has the potential for more layers compared to HD-DVD.
2. Blu-Ray's minimum transfer speed is faster than HD-DVD (to make the extra space usable).

Some would say the picture quality of HD-DVD is better compared to Blu-Ray, but that is entirely dependant on the player used, movie watched and encoding codec of the movie. Technically Blu-Ray has the pote...

Sony packed in a Blu-Ray movie with the first 500k shipped PS3's and the promotion ended in the middle of December. The quoted numbers are from January - well after the promotion ended.

Today, because of PS3, there are more installed Blu-Ray movieplayers than HD-DVD players. More moviestudios supporting the Blu-Ray format than HD-DVD. More manufacturers producing Blu-Ray players than manufacturers making HD-DVD players. And Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD in retail.

The SPU's of Cell are indeed processors -- I believe IBM would know:

But to me a forum post just doesn't count as official confirmation... I would like to see a link to an official MS confirmation or a report in a mainstream media about the release of Blue Dragon and/or Sonic in 1080p native resolution.

Forum comments or blog-news doesn't cut it as trustworthy.

And yes, I do know the X360 is capable of 1080p.

Regarding Sonic and Blue Dragon in 1080p, I find it kind of odd that none of the mainstream sites (like GameSpot, IGN, 1UP) mentions the 1080p support in their reviews, news or editorial, while MS themselves claim they are both 720p games:

That the Intel architecture of the Lindbergh board is actually what makes a port difficult -- not easy... Read up on the differences between the Intel and the simplified PowerPC architecture. Then read up on the differences between doing singlecore vs multicore games. Hopefully by then you will recognize how difficult a port is.

My best guess is that a X360 port will have more unmodified code in common with the PS3 version than the arcade version, with the PS3 and X360 both being o...

about either console. The CPU's of PS3 and X360 are more alike than a PC and X360. Infact, because of the similarities between the Lindbergh GPU and PS3 GPU, a port for PS3 is actually easier for Sega than a port for X360.

MS only announces shipments at their quaterly financial calls. Last one they stated 6 mill. shipped.

After the release of GoW MS claimed good sales of X360, but didn't announce any numbers. A couple of days ago MS reconfirmed that they are confident of SHIPPING atleast 10 mill. X360's before years end.

However, that doesn't change the fact that MS has to sell 4 mill. consoles in 3 months to reach the authors claims -- a number that by most industry analysts seems unlikel...

-And Sony never did that? Pfeh! '

Doesn't matter... It is the articles authors way of calculating that I have a problem with, not MS' change in shipment/sold target.

'"All retail data shows that MS are way behind reaching even that goal."
-Wrong, they're gonna come in close at least.'

MS has publicly stated that they sold 6 mill. X360's worldwide in 10 months, and you sug...

But the fact of the matter is that the combo HD-DVD/DVD's are sold at a premium. You can buy the same movie as a standard DVD at one third the price. In fact, if you buy the standard DVD now, the HD-DVD will in all likelyhood be on sale once the consumers finally decides to jump on board, and thus buying both the DVD and the HD-DVD version will ultimately be cheaper.

And for a consumer to buy a more expensive combo movietitle, he must have set his mind on buying a HD-DVD in the...

A quick check at Amazon.com would show that there are only a handfull of "combo" movies with both a DVD side and a HD-DVD side -- AND they are sold at a premium...

That argument really is quite silly.

Who on earth with an HD-DVD player, besides a few nerds, would seriously consider buying a more expensive HD-DVD title to get support for low quality video as well?

And who on earth, with only a standard DVD player, would buy a twice as expensive DVD wi...

They did make audio cassette mainstream with walkman, PlayStation the format of choice for console gaming for the last 12 years, MiniDisc the portable format of choice in the mid-nineties, they played a big part in making DVD mainstream with PS2 -- infact they have quite a few success-stories.

Just because people chose the inferior VHS over the superior Betamax, doesn't mean Sony can't learn from their past mistakes. Infact it seems as they have learned, since they've secured t...

A. He claims MS will sell 10 mill. and Sony 600K by years end, but those numbers are probably quite a bit from the truth:

1. MS themselves have stated they will not reach that goal, but are instead aiming for SHIPPED consoles.
2. All retail data shows that MS are way behind reaching even that goal.
3. While initial PS3 shipments seemed way below expected, shipments has been reported received by shops.

As the more different architectures are, the more optimizing is needed to get good performance on each.

But I'm not too sure CPU intensive code is just plainly compiled for each platform, as that would probably mean really poor performance. Instead I believe some subroutines are indeed coded specifically for Cell already, but the devs are still trying to figure how to get about doing truly optimized stuff for it, like for instance an improved AI algorithm. They are probably learnin...

Let me explain my point about only sharing a small part of code between the platforms.

1. General code, like the mainloop running on the PPE of Cell, will ofcourse be shared between the platforms.

2. Some shadercode for RSX and Xenos will ofcourse be shared as they are very similar, although there are some significant differences as well.

3. CPU intensive code, like i.e. the code for AI, physics, sound processing, potential Cell geometry manipulati...
