Even with the reduced quantities, Sony still aim for a better launch of PS3 in NA than X360 had in the same region. If Sony can match their new goals, they will be a runaway success compared to X360... Now, you do love your X360, don't you?

... before the end of the financial year, althoug one might doubt their ability to do that. If they succeed, they will have had a more successful launch than MS and the X360... That would be sufficient for said developers to believe in PS3 market penetration.

As usual you seem uninformed or ignorant...

MS shipped 326K X360s in NA in the first 9 days after launch. If Sony succeeds in shipping 400K at launch it will be Sony 1 - MS 0.

MS shipped 900K X360s in NA by the end of the year while retaildata shows less sold. If Sony succeeds in shipping 1.2M before years end it will be Sony 2 - MS 0.

Ofcourse, X360 launched a year early on Sony, so Sony 2 - MS 10.... ;-)

Sony never promissed PS3 for a release in march 2006 in any territory, they did promise a spring (march, april or may) 2006 release of the PS3 -- but indicated that would be for Japan only.

This is the first public delay of PS3 in Europe, and a sour one...

But I've waited so long that I can wait four more months...

I stand corrected... I haven't heard that interview before -- he is really trying to please all parties :-)

But lets reiterate. You got me to research this a bit more. PS3 final dev kits were announced by Sony to be shipped in june -- after the above interview, and with first public sighting in mid august. Maybe they did ship them early, but kind of strange they used pre-final kits for most if not all of the presentations at E3.

X360 final kits shipped around mid...

You can have your own personal opinion which games will sell this christmas, but allow me to slightly disagree with you. Time will tell.

Comparing CoD2 and CoD3 is very relevant, when you consider it the comparison between two launch titles. I'm not doubting CoD2 is a good game. But it is indeed impressive for a PS3 launch title to improve this much on graphics compared to a X360 launch title. The development teams had just about equal time with final dev kits on each platform....

That's fanboyism... I haven't heard of any mainstream three core CPUs from either AMD or Intel... For what we know, they might actually be comparing the Cell to X360... The slides aren't clear on that. And MS didn't cripple their CPU any more than Sony crippled Cell -- the PPU units are almost identical with a slight edge to X360, both because of a more advanced VMX-unit per core, and because they have actually implemented 3 cores in it, compared to Cells one core (ofcourse Cell has the 7 SPU...

The best looking X360 launch game was without a doubt PGR3, which was running in a res not much higher than todays PS2-games, and comparede to GT4 on the PS2 it isn't much of an improvement -- it's spectators are completely frozen?!?!

COD2 can be compared to COD3, and COD3 definitely looks better... Kameo... come on... What games are left which are visually stunning? Resistance blows all of them away -- even compared to GOW it isn't doing too shabby.

I know you'v...

Sony only delayed the PS3 for Japan, so TheMart, unless you dutch ass lives in Japan, it hasn't been delayed any for you. Stop it... ;-)

You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

Each SPU is initially set up by the PPU, but once loaded with a program, they do their own thing. They are fully working cores as much as the X360's cores are with their own shared DMA, just as the x360s cores. The difference being the x360's cores are VERY slow at complex vector-maths compared to each SPU, but more versatile in generic coding.

But fortunately stuff like physics, geometry effects, particle sys...

How can they make a HDMI cable for a connector inside the x360? Do owners have to split it apart and connect it?

Obviously not.. 1080p games could be feasable, but since most x360 games so far are having trouble even getting good framerate at 720p, it's highly unlikely.

The Cell is actually excellent at gaming... For one thing, there are a lot of GAMES coming out for the PS3 in less than three months and most developers seem quite excited about using it for games. The only ones stating the opposite is John Cormack and MS-engineers -- not exactly impartial statements.

And compared to X360, the PS3 launch games actually look a bit nicer than the X360-launch games. Look at COD2 for X360 compared to COD3 for PS3 -- I can see an improvement. And yes, I...

It could actually still mean the X360 is faster at running Havok in actual games, since it has got more PPU to run the actual gamecode on, and looking at the slides, Havok obviously needs them in a major way.

But it all depends on how much Havok on the Cell is actually dependant on the PPU-threads, and how fast the SPU-part of Havok would actually run if converted to the X360s remaining 4 PPU-threads.

So again... theese slides don't tell much...

The article has got it wrong... the speed is showed on the actual slides in ms, and the PS3 (two-threaded, 4 SPUs) is faster with 4.2ms than the three-core PC with 4.6ms.

And a tricore PC is nothing like a tricore 360... For one thing the PPUs of both the PS3 and X360 hasn't got as good branch-prediction and are limited in a number of ways. It is pretty straightforward basic knowledge that a single standard Intel or AMD core are more powerfull than a single X360 core (obviously...

basicly each of x360's three ppu's are equal to the one ppu in cell but with somewhat faster vmx units in the x360 (though the SPUs in Cell are a lot faster and a lot more advanced than the VMX units in the x360). But the ppu's are very simple, and slow even in most circumstances, compared to pc processors, so a three core x360 can't be compared to a three core PC.

this comparison is silly (on the slides) because it doesn't state which 3 core PC processor they compare it to, making...

To some, me included, they actually do have an advantage, and not even by a small margin. The experience of HD-content is in my opinion vastly superior.

But you are right that neither HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray has massmarket appeal at the moment. And as you said, I too believe the shift will happen in two-three years time along with shift to digital TV and people investing in new TVs (at that time 1080p sets will probably be standard) because of that.

And at that time it will b...

Blu-Ray is nothing like Betamax or UMD.

Betamax was a proprietary format with next to none supporters on either the hardware or software side - although it was the technically superior format.

UMD is a proprietary format developed specifically for the PSP and because of this a limited support from the movie studios.

Blu-Ray is technically superior format developed in cooperation with several big players. It has the vast majority of support from BOT...

I have... In fact, I can switch between the two on my cable settopbox -- and there is a world of difference eventhough my flatscreen doesn't support true 1080i (it has a resolution higher than 720p but lower than 1080i).

For HD-material on a good flatscreen, there really is no comparison.

Prices on LCDs falls by approx. 30% every year and has done so for the past four years in a row. Todays highend topmodel will be mainstream in two years time (although still more expensive than CRTs).

In other words, most people not on a very tight budget and looking for a new television, will buy 1080p LCDs in two years time.

For HD-material on a good flatscreen, there really is no competition.

And regarding 1080p, most high-highend LCD TV's this coming holiday will support true 1080p resolution (here in Europe anyway) and in the coming years it will be the norm for e...
