Someone explain to me how what he did to the PS3 is ANY different to what he did (and what was found to be legal) to the iPhone.
I was hoping to stay somewhat level with this article. I tried opening by saying that it was a significant event that Sony should be proud of, but the main point I tried to make is that ultimately, it wont change much for the ones that make the big decisions - publishers and developers.
Usually when you want your favourite football team to win, one of the ways of doing it is to bash the other teams.
Bit of a misleading title for sure. Steam is NOT coming to the 360, rather someone's released a technology that allows 360 games to communicate with games on Steam. I'm not even sure Microsoft will allow such a thing.
I'm going to bite the bullet and get a billion zillion disagrees here but what the hell:
1) What "Law" is Geohot Breaking? As the article points out, this exact same thing has been done on the iphone and found to be legal.

2) Geohot specifically did NOT give out information that could directly lead to pir...
This is a great article. But I will mention something that it hasn't mentioned. A while ago, I bought 3 HDMI cables to connect my 360 and PS3 to my AV receiver and to my TV.
1 of the cables was particularly cheaper than the other 2 (which were also pretty cheap) and as a result, the cable doesn't seem to fit properly into the socket. It's really annoying because I loose the signal completely and have to keep jiggling it to get it right.
Eventually I just g...
Hacking isn't illegal. Nor is Linux, running your own code, jailbreaking, etc.
That's a lot of IF's. The fact that they found out how to hack through linux is irrelevant, Sony should have attempted to Patch it or block it in some way. Instead, they removed Linux for EVERYONE. Anyone interested in hacking the PS3 just didn't have to update and they still have Linux, letting them do whatever they wanted.
Furthermore, the "linux hack" was not easy. It required extra hardware, soldering and wasn't reliable. Even if it did let you pirate gam...
You need to see the presentation to see why it's an epic fail.
Well, not necessarily. The whole goal of this project is to put Linux back on the PS3, so really it only started when Sony decided to remove it.
This is their quote - "our goal is to have linux running on all existing PS3 consoles, whatever their firmware versions.".
The fact that some people may try to use this to promote piracy is Sony's fault for removing Linux in the first place.
Private key means they can make their own programs (without having to jailbreak the PS3). Having access to the NOR means they can exploit the PS3 from boot, without the need for any kind of dongle.
Expect to see a .pup update file, in a few weeks, that hacks the PS3 in much the same way as the wii is hacked today.
And it's NOT easy for Sony to patch.
Expect PS3 sales to go through the roof, while game sales start slipping.
It's not for sale anywhere, it isn't available legally anywhere, thus any downloads of it do not count as piracy. Nobody is loosing any money from people downloading this.
I particularly notice this line - "revalations online that the PSP2 has more internal memory than the Xbox 360 (1GB)".
Why on earth is the 360 singled out? The PS3 has the exact same amount of memory as the 360 (512Mb), this says to me that the article is just looking for hits.
I'm not being funny, but half the fun of ME2 (for me, anyway), was talking to all the people I met in the first one and seeing my influence in the second game, everyone. All those decisions....
I would definitely rather have that than all the DLC + better graphics, but ideally I'd prefer to have it all. I love Mass Effect and I've always said if they bring out the trilogy on PS3, I'll buy it and play it all through start to finish.
I know I'm going to get flamed to hell for this, but...does anyone not think that, although GT5 may well be the better game (compared to Forza 3), that the difference in quality isn't as great as you'd think, when you consider how long Forza 3 was in development for, compared to GT5?
I'm not saying anything is wrong with GT5, just that it seemed to be in development forever and Forza can be knocked out easily.
Big fan here. The first game was just a blast to play. Nothing deep and meaningful, if you want an RPG with a bit of depth, go play inFamous, but if you just want to much around a bit and have some quick simple fun, Prototype is fantastic.
About a million years in the making and they just gave up and released it unfinished =\
Justify what? Adding a bit of colour to your clan tag? Big whup, I fail to see how that's going to give you any kind of advantage in game or unbalance anything in any way. Unless, of course, that you're implying the only reason people will prestige is to change their clan tag colour.
Neowin has been around for a decade now, it's ranked in the top 200 of many english speaking countries and in the top 500 in the world. Just because YOU'VE never heard of it doesn't make it any less important.
It even has its own Wiki entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
However, the thing to keep in mind is that neowin acts mainly as a news aggregation site, most articles on the...
Homebrew doesn't have to enable piracy. In fact, nothing Geohot released was ever usable for piracy (no, not even that key), it was other people who released different modified firmwares that enabled piracy and they didn't use any of Geohots tools to do it. He somehow became the face of all this, yet when it comes to piracy, he contributed almost nothing to it.
But I digress - Why should homebrew enable piracy? Why can't Sony have released a cut down version of the PS3 SDK...
