Decibel is a logarithmic scale. Something that is 10 dB higher is perceived as twice as loud, so our ears can easily detect differences way below 10 dB. +4 dB difference will be perceived as 30% louder so it's certainly an audible difference provided it isn't drowned out by other audio sources. With decibel levels in the low forties it is still comperatively quiet.

It's not unusual for Sony to use different fans. They've done the same thing with the PS4 alr...

If only. Unfortunately people that easily jump to conclusions like that don't tend to be the self-reflective type. Chances are most of them are already subscribing to the next conspiracy theory.

I'm not worried about the SoC temps, because the fan should have more than enough headroom to deal with rising ambient temps.

The RAM temps are disappointing. Hopefully they won't cause issues with higher ambient temps. If they do, that would be a massive oversight on Sony's part considering the amount of R&D that went into cooling the SoC. This won't deter me from getting a PS5 though. It seems like the metal shielding allows for a TIM application that ...

@IGiveHugs:

The problem is that 32Gbit/s limits it to output 4k 120Hz at YUV 4:2:2. This means that you currently can't get a full 4K 120Hz signal without chroma subsampling.

Here we go... I knew I would see this misinformation pop up everywhere now. His 20-50% performance advantage over PS5 figure is completely illogical. I've tried to explain to him on twitter why it doesn't make any sense, but he didn't respond. When I retweeted his post warning people not to fall for this misinformation he immediately blocked me without adressing any of my criticisms.

Just to summarize some of the fallacies:

-The low end 20% fi...

People interested in 8k should save their console money and invest it in a cryosleep chamber instead.

@Ju: This game uses dynamic resolution scaling. It's not gonna be limited by fillrate. Not to mention that the upper and lower bounds of the fillrate are lower on the 120fps mode compared to the 60fps mode, so if fillrate was a problem here it would be a problem across all modes.

Having 8 cores with SMT doesn't mean much if you can't utilize all those threads effectively. For high thread utilization you have to run highly parallel code. Games typically have a hi...

GPU compute differences aren't gonna help in CPU bound scenarios, which is where we're seeing the PS5 pull ahead so far. High framerate modes (120 fps) are very draw-call intensive, so having a smaller driver & system overhead on the CPU is likely what gives the PS5 the advantage in these scenarios. Microsoft might be able to optimize their SDK, but Sony will keep improving theirs as well. I doubt MS is gonna catch up to Sony's efficiency because their graphics API isn't a...

And also one of the most impressive technical showpieces of that generation. I still think it looks amazing on native hardware. Obviously the stream compression through PS Now is going to ruin it and then the additional compression from youtube is gonna make it even worse.

It's impossible to estimate failure rates based on anectodal reports, but a 5% failure rate out of the box would be pretty bad. I doubt it's that high. It's worth noting that the disc drive they used in the Series X seems to be pretty much identical with the One X drive: https://youtu.be/tfJBJTWVY9...

I'd want them to add one at a later date, but it would have to be of comparable quality to internet browsers available on PC to be useful. I don't want to disable Javascript all the time just because a site stopped responding or the allocated memory volume is overflowing. If they can't make a quality browser, there is no point in adding one at all.

It makes sense from a business perspective, although there is a delicate balance between maximising short term return of investment and giving people enough reason to upgrade to the new console.

From a game design perspective it's a real shame no matter how you look at it. The engineers put so much work into the PS5 hardware to give more freedom to the creative process and game designers still end up being bogged down by a mandate to design their games around 2013 hardw...

Can you name some 1st party cross gen games between PS1/2, PS2/3 or PS3/4? Most I can think of were either 3rd party games or minor games that wouldn't have been hardware showcase titles even if they were exclusive to the next-gen system of the time. I don't remember ever seing something as significant as Horizon being cross gen.

I prefer the neutral definition of the word, because I think it makes it easier to separate an objective statement from my subjective opinion and have a productive discussion this way. But yeah, I didn't necessarily disagree with your first comment either. Just wanted to give my two cents on the topic. Seems like we're mostly on the same page.

There is reasonable and unreasonable discrimitation. Building wheelchair access is a reasonable form of discrimination. Having separate restrooms for men and women is another example of reasonable discrimination.

Changing a line of text in a video game, because you want to minimize offense is an unreasonable form of discrimination, because it assumes that the concerning category of people is unable to deal with a line of text and needs to be protected.

This is laughable. If the word "disfigured" is offensive enough to warrant changes in a viking game they might as well not make a viking game at all. They're setting a bad precedent with this one. It only took 6 hours from the complaint to the official commitment to comply with the demand to change it. They have to realize that there are potentially hundreds of demands like this waiting around the corner. Are they going to treat them all equally, or are they going to discriminat...

Dynamic resolution would've helped this port a lot. As it is now though, they should simply lower the rendering resolution across the board, especially in the cutscenes to get it closer to the target. Add framecap toggles as an option. It's weird that the game automatically caps the framerate at the refresh rate of the display. VRR would've certainly helped mitigate most of the resulting judder produced by the inconsistent framerate.

I haven't. I'll have my first playthrough on PS5. Does anyone know when this was patched the last time? I'm curious when the DualSense functionality was added.

@Jim_Sakai: Probably because the browser ended up being the security weak spot leading to the PS4 jailbreak. If the PS5 OS is still based on FreeBSD it's possible that Sony didn't find an alternative that would satisfy their security standards for the PS5.

Graphical glitches like this can happen when not using native hardware. Many games with minor glitches will still be playable. Only 380 out of 15402 entries are on the list of games with that might exhibit errors or unexpected behavior. While it's possible that Sony can address some issues post launch it's more likely that most remaining problems would require a game patch to fix.
