Besides, IBM has been working on this since 1997 and STILL can't come up with a commercially viable model... What makes this small fry think he can pull off something that big blue couldn't?

"This is actually terrible news for the PS3 and actually anybody that has bought a Blu-ray player. It means in 2009 you will have to buy a new one to be able to use these."

This is talking about data storage, not movies or gaming. You'll probably start seeing 8 layer BURNERS and BD-ROM's, but I sincerely doubt you'll see stuidos or game companies using this due to the high cost per layer to duplicate discs on multiple layers...

First off, the fact that you're from North America (and probably the USA), and don't have a very good grasp on the English language is sad... truly sad... Did this article anger you so badly that you couldn't even type straight? ;-)

Second off, WTF does this have to do with Sony Vs. Microsoft? This is more about Micro$oft trying to play bully again because their (an example of a proper use of their...) server software is taking one serious a$$ kicking, and they're starting to...

The only advantage that I've seen so far for HDMI is that you can do 7.1 surround sound over HDMI (where TOSLINK only does 5.1). I'm going to pick up a couple more HDMI cables off of NewEgg (~$20 each) and give it a shot with my new surround sound receiver.

The only place you're likely to see 7.1 surround sound anytime soon is with HD movies (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) though...

I bought into the whole HDMI thing when I purchased my TV (Westinghouse 37" 1080p) after getting my PS3. Funny thing is that I started running into an issue. Whenever my PS3 would change resolutions, the sound would stop and the picture would flash.

After reading up on the issue, it appeared that what I was running into was an HDCP handshake issue. After some mucking around I found a workaround. Either changing to a different picture source and changing back to HDMI, o...

You're complaining about framerates on a LOW END DX10 card? You'd be MUCH better off with the DX9 demo with your configuration.

They will probably do streaming "rentals" through PSN, and the only way to buy a movie is on Blu-Ray... Although giving the consumer the option to purchase the Blu-Ray disc of the rental after you're done viewing it would be a nice touch...

Personally, I prefer having the movie on disc as far as a purchase. That way, you can always trade-in or sell any older titles you don't want anymore. You can't do that with purely digital distribution.

They already do that with the 360. The CPU contains "soft fuses" which can be blown out through updates (or through the hypervisor).

The problem is that the modders figured out a way to have their hacked firmware report back to the rest of the hardware/software the same way the original does. Which makes it VERY hard to detect.

The truly ironic part about this is that the DVD firmware hack would have never been possible if Microsoft had changed the wa...

I give it one week TOPS before a workaround is in circulation...

All I can say is look how rapidly modders were able to work around the PSP firmware "fixes".

Where there's a will, there's a way...

Keep in mind that somebody that has a flashed firmware on their DVD drive SHOULD have followed the directions and saved a dump of their original DVD firmware. And even if they didn't, all they would have to do is go on eBay and pickup a new DVD drive.

So the only people that will be buying new 360's off of this is dorks that don't follow directions, and are not technically savvy enough to replace a DVD drive...

I sincerely doubt this will cause a surge in sales ...

Agreed... This whole format war does nothing but confuse the consumer. I personally don't want to be forced to buy both a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player just to get all the movies I want in high definition...

Once all of the new movies are available in BOTH formats, that will be a LITTLE better. This always seems to happen whenever new technology becomes available... VideoDisc, LaserDisc... VHS, Betamax... DVD, DIVX... Now Blu-Ray, HD-DVD... It's getting a bit ridiculous bec...

Too bad the network infrastructure sufficient to support that on a wide-scale basis is NOT very wide-spread yet. In the major cities it MIGHT work, depending on the backbones they have run, and the delivery technologies available.

Widespread digital distribution is still a good two years out. Also, would you REALLY want that? What happens when your hard drive on your 360 fills up? You WON'T be able to transfer your previously purchased content to another media, and how long...

This is just as ridiculous as the articles predicting the doom of Microsoft due to losses from their gaming division. NEITHER COMPANY IS GOING UNDER DUE TO THEIR GAMING DIVISION'S LOSSES...

Even Microsoft is facing these kind of issues with their XBox business unit. Hell, the XBox business unit HAS NEVER MADE MICROSOFT A PROFIT.

So does that mean that Microsoft is going to be filing for bankruptcy protection anytime soon? HELL NO...

You've DEFINITELY never played a good round of Unreal Tournament (any of them) then...

Then again, coming from a PC FPS background (and usually cranking the snot out of the mouse sensitivity for insane speed), most console shooters feel slow to me.

Killzone 2 will be awesome, Unreal Tournament 3 is going to be mind blowing, Halo 3? I'll pass... =P

I recall how developers were complaining left and right about the PS2 being too hard to code for... Now even inexperienced developers can crank out PS2 games in no time flat.

All it will take is a little more time for the dev kits and API's to mature and become easier.

I'm willing to bet that (just like the 360) around a year after release is when the major breakthroughs will happen and you will see the graphic quality of PS3 games JUMP up.

The 36...

Really? So should I unplug my alarm clock, air conditioner, TV, Cable box, etc. when I go to bed? =P

I've been running my PC 24/7 for YEARS, and I haven't burned down one place I lived in yet... What you're saying may have been true for 70's and 80's electronics, or REALLY poorly made electronics, but anything fairly recent and of good quality is of no concer...
