One problem with that... In order to work with the largest number of audio receivers, the signal has to comply with the Optical S/PDIF specification.

Even assuming that you're using a premium TOSLINK cable (quartz crystal fiber with really good cladding to minimize beam scatter), you're still working with only 10Mhz of bandwidth. Not to mention, you're still using red laser technology.

Keep in mind that when you're talking about faster fiber technologies like 8...

The bandwidth issue with optical is definately a problem with trying to do HD Audio.

I know that whenever you're working with LightPipe, you can multiplex up to eight channels over a single optical cable. The only problem is that once you start upping the bit depth and sample rate on the audio streams, you have to drop down the number of channels you're sending over the fiber.

For example, you can run eight channels of CD audio quality audio (16bit, 44.1Khz). B...

The fact that this IBM rendering toolkit is able to work in a distributed manner like this could lead to some really cool breakthroughs. Using a combination of this rendering software, and something like SGI's OpenGL VizServer to stream the output to consoles in people's living rooms could be huge... ...

Paying $99 for a 20GB hard drive is nothing short of highway robbery... So, if you're already cool with getting ripped off on the 20GB drive, I guess the 120GB does look like a deal... ;-)

I wonder what Microsoft would do if somebody figured out how to put ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive in their enclosure? I only paid $140 for a 160GB 2.5" SATA hard drive, and that was almost six months ago...

C'mon Team Xecuter... I know you guys are working on this! ;-) And where's the 360 modchips already... XBox Media Center would be beyond awesome if ported to the 360's hardware...

LOL, ROFL!!! Ahhh man... they don't "take advantage" of ya, they give you the "choice" to pay more for their system to get similar functionality to their competitor's offering... ;-)

Sony systems have ALWAYS had a slow start, only to end up turning out amazing games. The first year of ANY of Sony's systems has historically been slow. When the PS2 initially came out, it didn't have any games that were a "must have" for the system. Yet it still went on to sell over 100 million units. The PS2 received a good bit of bad press over failing hardware, yet it still ended up being one of the most successful consoles EVER.

Now with the PS3... It has ad...

"Blu Ray is not that big of a factor here. The PC games have far surpassed the console world and they still use DVD9's."

Yes, PC games are just recently getting to DVD9 discs... For the install media. Take a look at the size of the game once it's decompressed and installed... Not so tiny anymore...

With Sony already manufacturing the Cell CPU's on a 65nm die process (and working on shrinking it down to a 45nm die process), they will achieve pretty significant component price drops. Also, the smaller chips require less power and less cooling than the original 90nm chips, which means even more components can be eliminated in the power supply and the cooling system. And if Sony can make the software backwards compatibility work out, then that's another cost reduction.

I ha...

Also, keep in mind that older movies on Blu-Ray will NOT show off what the format is capable of. The majority of the blu-ray re-releases were upscaled to fill out a 1080p display, which means that it will not look any better than playing a DVD on a GOOD upscaling DVD player. (Just like how some of the early DVD's didn't look that much better than the same movie on a GOOD VHS VCR)

Now newer movies? Absolutely no comparison between DVD and Blu-Ray on a 1080p display. Crank is...

DRM doesn't work... DRM protected music can STILL be pirated, DRM protected movies are STILL available on P2P networks. DRM has FAILED in doing the one thing that it was designed to do... Protect digital media...

Instead, all it really does is to make using digital media a serious pain in the a$$ for the end user. Just take a look into the types of issues that people run into with iPod's and other MP3 players trying to get things working...

A faster refresh screen (to get rid of the nasty ghosting you see in PSP games)

A better analog stick (at least something that feels more like the pointer nubs on laptops)

BETTER BATTERY LIFE (shrink the die size on the chips, go with a dual-core MIPS R4400 instead of two physical chips, go with an Organic Electro-Luminescent screen, or LED backlight for the LCD... SOMETHING to help with the battery life)

Faster UMD drive (UMD is now a two year ol...
