They strive for it, because it's wanted, in many cases demanded. It it less about whether or not it actually matters, and more about what is going to sell consoles. It's about marketing, and bragging rights.
Whether or not it "matters" is completely subjective, and there is no right or wrong answer.
...so you're hooking a PC to your TV? I do that too...oh, you're talking about PS4, aren't you?...
pssst, not all PS4 games will be 1080p...
Also, the mindset from others that spending $400 on a console warrants a "demand" for best, is eye-roll material. Really? $400 and you demand "the best"....consistently? Talk about setting your expectations high...
This isn't the first time a console has released, and...
The assessment is completely fair, since it's using standard measurements for comparison. Resolution has known increments - 360, 480, 720, 1080, etc. Framerates also follow a similar philosophy. 24fps for film, 30 or 60fps for games, and then you can unlock the framerate (like PC) and obtain whatever your system can handle. Although devs can aim for virtual any framerate they desire, 30 and/or 60 tends to be the "sweet spot."
So it isn't about actually halv...
Pre-built systems still require maintenance - driver conflicts, software updates, BIOS settings, etc. You still need to have some sense of know-how to effectively maintain a PC, regardless who built it.
In addition to the building part, this is the other big reason many people shy away from PC's for gaming.
@SpinalRemains138
It is understood by more than you think, it just isn't emphasized because it isn't as big a deal as many claim. So many people are focusing on resolution, that even something as substantial as framerates seems to take a backseat.
The new consoles are offering a enough new features, that without even getting into resolution, they justify their price tag. Battlefield will have 564 player support, and be running at 60fps. Many if not al...
I agree. I'll take 60fps and lower resolution over the opposite. Hell, in competitive PC gaming, it's pretty common (or at least was) for players to disable a lot of visual features, to obtain the best framerates possible. When I played competitively, that is what is what I did. It was also used to gain advantages, like disabling lightning do eliminate dark spots/shadows for players to hide in.
@DragonKnight
"What benefits? Because so far only dedicated serves has been claimed to be a benefit at launch and dedicated servers aren't new. So what new benefits is "dah kloud" bringing that MS is implementing?"
Umm, Drivatar? http://www.joystiq.com/2013...
Titanfall is also using the cloud...
"To bad they can't make a good game with cloud power. All we hear is it can do this and do that but you never see it"
We never see it? The console hasn't even launched yet, thus no games either. Could your argument be a little less premature and maybe actually wait till the subject in discussion is actually available to the public?
People like you come off as though you want the cloud to be a failure, because if it's proven to do even h...

“There is practically next to nothing MS is offering (other than gaming) with the XBOX ONE that can't be done on smart phones, smart TV's, laptops, tablets, PC's, etc. Even voice and camera controls exist on the tech I listed.”
- There’s next to nothing that either console is offering that can’t be done on other devices. What’s your point? I don’t think most people buy a console to replace their phone, or their tablet or even their PC. They bu...
@Brutallyhonest
“That's exactly the point. Most core MS fans don't care about Kinect. Nearly every 360 gamer I know that tried it all had the same response. I was bored with it after a couple times using it.
- This is irrelevant. Do you watch every single channel on your TV? I ask, because if you want your cable package, it has to come with all those extra channels – it’s known as a “packaged deal,” and even expensive purchases such as cars, deal with th...
My comment actually has nothing to do with a "console wars" mindset. It isn't about us vs them, so if it was the "other way around" I would a still be saying the same thing.
And how nice do you think those animations, textures, AA and lighting would look on TLOU if it had to render all those extra models at once? Your argument is inaccurate and selective.
And AI routines is more of a CPU thing than a GPU, which wouldn't really have an effect on the resolution.
Does TLOU has the same amount of models and "action" happening onscreen at once throughout the course of the game? To simply overlook everything and focus solely on the numbers, is ignorance.
KZ:SF may be running at 1080p, but is only achieving 60fps in MP. They ramped up the visuals, and as a result, took a hit to performance, and this is only on an FPS game, with not nearly as much going on at once.
@below
There was no comparison ...
I can already see all the inaccurate comparisons when comparing this game with exclusives on PS4. There is an impressive amount of things happening on screen at once in DR3, but of course none of that matters to many - they completely dismiss it and see focus only on numbers. 1080p vs 720p. 30fps vs 60fps.... That fact that so much stuff id going on a t once, is a direct example of "next-gen" despite the resolution and framerate.
Where was it stated that 1080p/60fps...
Ryse runs at 900p
Forza is 1080p native
your comment is irrelevant...
For all the "less for more" or similar remarks, concerning the price of the xbox, all your claims are inaccurate.
The increased price of the xbox has nothing to do with the inclusion of superior hardware, nor does it have anything to do with a promise of or claim of such. The xbox costs more, beecause you are physically getting more - The Kinect, as well as the HDMI-in port, which regardless how insignificant you may find it, is going to drive up the initial cost. T...
It's all about perception and language. Where you may see the Kinect "forced" on people, others may simply see it "included" or "bundled" with the Xbox One. Is the headset also "forced" on people? By using the word "forced," you create the image that you must use it against your will, which isn't the case at all, rather than just the fact that it comes as a packaged deal with every X1.
As for it being a good/or bad thi...
I think it's more of a developer issue, whether due to receiving kits/drivers too late, or simple unfamiliarity with the system. If the X1 is running a game like Ryse at 900p, a game developed by Crytek who is known for pushing systems to the limit, do you really think COD was such a resource hog that it couldn't achieve higher than 720p?
If I could pick my nine:
1. Friends - all mine are on xbox
2. UI - vastly prefer Xbox dashboard over Sony
3. Controller - I despise the dualshock controller.
4. Services - I will choose XBL over PSN every time.
5. Included Kinect - Believe it or not, people are looking forward to it.
6. Snap feature - After seeing it in action, it looks very promising. Considering that I game on the same monitor as my PC, now I can snap to a br...
Does this have any effect on the amount fun players will have with either console?
Do the consoles have some sort of symbiotic relationship with the community that works to empower the console, where more sales results in higher processing power, better visuals and extra features?
Are people rewarded or punished based on them choosing the higher or lower selling console?
Does popularity = quality?
- The answer to all of these...
