I love the PSP, and while it has sold less than the DS, it has still sold over 50 million units. That's a LOT. And you can't just compare it to DS sales. Nintendo has been in the handheld market for almost two decades. The PSP is Sony's first handheld, and yet Sony STILL managed to snag a third of the handheld market away from Nintendo.
Anyone with half a brain can see that the PSP is a massive success. It's just that the DS is a more massive success.
And to think that people put up with this while ALSO paying a subscription fee for basic multiplayer functionality. If I have a Pandora account, I don't have to listen to ads. Heck, take any service out there that's free but also offers a "Premium" version and the first thing they do is cut out the ads.
2009 was an awesome year....if you owned a PS3.
I take the author's opinion with a major grain of salt since he closes his article with "Hopefully New Super Mario Brothers Wii is good". So, you complain about all those games being boring, run-of-the-mill snoozefests yet you hope NSMB Wii will be good? Really?

I see. I was wondering if it was a joke or not. Out of curiousity, were there any games you DID enjoy this fall?
I've been playing this and it's a LOT of fun. I'm amazed how solid the mechanics and physics are. The only downside is the lack of multiplayer, but you can't have it all, I suppose.
Interesting points. It's also interesting how the media is ignoring this. In Japan, when the 360 sold more than the PS3 -- even if for just a week -- the media jumped all over it with "is PS3 doomed?" and "will the 360 rise in the land of the rising sun?" Even though the sales numbers were still quite small, the media gave us the excuse "Oh, but Microsoft is beating Sony in their HOME TERRITORY! OMG!"
So, where is everyone now? Sony is beating Micros...
...and blew it with Vista, and blew it with Zune, and blew it with Bing, and blew it with the 360's hardware, and blew it with...
I think some people would rather forget KZ2 existed, because it pretty much met all expectations in defiance of all the doom and gloom the media was spouting.
Funny thing...
The gaming media glorified the 360 Twitter/last.fm update as if it was the biggest update in history.
But now that it's on the PS3, it's nothing but "uhhhhh, who cares?"
Same thing with Netflix integration.
This article could have easily been titled "seven ways Microsoft runs their Xbox brand".
Read the article and you can't disagree with what I just said.
Greeeeat. Let's add two hours to the current 4-hour campaign, throw in a couple of multiplayer maps, then charge $15. Yaaaaaay!
And reviewers will still be awarding this game 9.5/10 scores....
So sad.
It was a decent list, but I'm puzzled by games like Crisis Core and GTA being on there whereas Disgaea (1 or 2...take your pick) and Monster Hunter are both absent.
What games did 360 owners have to buy in the past couple of months?
What games did PS3 owners have to buy in the past couple of months?
What genre of games are primarily played on the PS3 and 360?
I think if we answer those questions, this is less of a news flash and more of a "yeah, I'd be more surprised if it DIDN'T sell more".
Yeah. Hotel Dusk was one of the best storylines on the DS, imo. I hope that a new one will find its way to the West.
PSN and XBLIVE provide two basic services: playing games online and communicating with the people you play against.
One is free. The other is not. Yes, one has a few extra features, but you are still required to pay for the same BASIC services that the other offers at no cost.
And worse yet, the one you have to pay for doesn't even cover dedicated servers. It's still P2P. The free one -- ironically -- has more games that support dedicated servers.
I can -- and do -- ask for something that is more than a rehash. MW2 is little more to me than a rehash, and it's easy to see that in light of all the innovative, fresh games that came out this year.
@ EdgeofBlade
Yeah, THIS GENERATION Sony picked up a few things from M$, but a great deal of Microsoft's direction with both the Xbox and the 360 has boiled down to "what made Sony popular, and how can we copy it?"
To point to the few ways where the PS3 has imitated the 360 is to miss the big picture that spans the past three generations.
And to think....
People still believe that Microsoft DOESN'T bribe the media and DOESN'T influence the media.
HAHAHAHAHHAH!
Sorry, but a game being "fun and addictive" and that's it ISN'T the most important thing. I like a complete package.
I've been both a PC and console gamer since the Atari 2600 days. My enjoyment of games that are "fun and addictive" and nothing more is somewhat limited, especially since video games aren't my only source of fun and entertainment.
@ hutch
You got me there, because online gaming is the same thing as newspapers and television.
Not.
