Perhaps very true they are looking to maximize profit. But do they see the forest from the trees? They could be doing more harm than good for the long term bottom line. EA is counting on the ignorance of an uninformed consumer to make up for lost sales of core gamers.
It's EA who paid for the rights to use the Star Wars brand from Disney. Not DICE. DICE is merely the mechanism to produce the product. So sure DICE is complicit but probably only insofar as they have to go along to get along. Did anyone really expect DICE staff to step out of line in the AMA? They can't do that.
Reject EA's business model but not buying this game. Unfortunately, DICE gets caught in the crossfire. But such is life.
I imagine many at DICE want to make a Star Wars game everyone wants. But EA's suits are not Star Wars fans. They see Star Wars as a guaranteed money making tool only. They will use the backdrop of Star Wars to advance their destructive GaaS business model. Sadly, many will fall victim to their plans. But I am glad to see many core gamers pushing back. But voices are not enough.
The loudest voice is the silence of your wallet! EA is listening alright. They should hea...
Sony didn't help the PS Vita by using proprietary storage cards which cost way more than SD cards.
EA's GaaS model as shown in SW BF2 is terrible It's like a good looking person with a terrible infectious STD. Do you really want to date them? No thanks, I'll pass.
Well I will say I still love hearing Skyrim's musical score. It just has such a great quality to it and pulls me back into that world. I'd call that an emotional draw. HZD is great for other reasons. So many great games to play. I am glad I don't have the burden to pick one and then justify it. They can all be great in my book.
Frankly, this year is way too difficult for me to chose just one GotY. BotW and HZD are on my list along with others. Just too hard to pick. Luckily I don't have to. I can just play them all. :)
Sure it's going to sell. But will it meet their projections? Many core gamers will stay away from this game, myself included. Casuals play for a little while but they are not the long-term engaged monetized crowd. EA is still losing many thousands of sales if not more.
@xPhearR3dx I don't disagree that SW BF2 has some great aspects. However, this game is a prime example of what EA considers GaaS. Long-term engagement and monetization done all wrong. Obviously, writers, artists, coders, testers, are not to blame here. It's the implementation of a business plan (mostly of EA's design) which most gamers find objectionable. The only way to show displeasure is to avoid purchasing this game.
The article is contrarian clickbait to get some money by throwing a figurative grenade in the room.
Regarding the article writer...there always has to be a contrarian in the bunch.
I think it's plain to see what EA's GaaS approach is for SW BF2. Lure people in with pretty graphics and the iconic Star Wars brand. Charge people full retail price if not more for a game then hook the whales and gambling addicted persons with constant microtransactions. EA calls it Long term engagement with monetization.
Supporting this game by purchasing it will o...
Luckily there are so many other great games to play right now. EA's SW BF2 is surely not one of them.
It's not that there is an exhaust port, but that it leads directly to the core which can be ignited and blow up the whole ship.
And iirc, according to Rogue One, it was designed in that way as a matter of subterfuge.
Either way, this game should go the way of the original death star.
He says the tweet was "taken out of context".
I don't think so. I think we all know exactly why he would tweet out such a comment. So none of out here are professionals, developers, adults, or otherwise savvy gamers? Do our lying eyes deceive us? SW BF2 is heavily weighted to encourage MT purchases from the whales and otherwise gambling addicted population.
What little changes they have made are only as a reaction to the furor. Doubtful the...
To be fair, it's mostly not developers at fault here. They code what they are told to code. It's game designers driven by business people. I get it's a business, but when many in the buying public call out what they see as a sad turn of events in game design, the company attacks the customer? Not smart. Few gamers are enthusiastic about "longterm engagement and continued monetization" as a business practice.
My response to that guy would be "The armchair gamers in these companies".
Good job picking a fight with the people EA is so desperately courting to buy their product. This guys attitude is basically summed up as, you all don't know anything about game development. So just trust us we're experts. We know better than you.
I love saving money. Thanks, EA and associated technorati, you make my purchasing decisions easier every day.
You took the words out of my mouth. I was laughing to see that as the very first comment here. Perfect. This game is a non purchase.
I think it points to existing X1 owners being unhappy with their console and upgrading. Most PS4 owners felt no immediate need to upgrade. I seriously doubt MS is growing their install base in any substantive manner.
The Respawn purchase is mostly incentive based on financial performance of Respawn too. Most of the money EA is offering is 4 years out. So you know Respawn's motives now will not be their creativity but rather how can we best maximize our ROI so we get our money from EA on our acquisition. You can bet Respawn will be looking to "monetize long-term engagement" via microtransactions. EA and others are a cancer on an entertainment medium we all love.
I think it used to make too much money. But their inclusion in full priced games (single and multiplayer) for non-cosmetic random items is relatively new. Does anyone think some IDC analyst has the pulse of the gaming market? Comparing to other titles like Overwatch is inaccurate. OW was less than $60 retail and it's MT system is cosmetic.
SW BF2 will do far worse than it could have done. EA is capitalizing on several factors, it's Xmas shopping season, it's ...
