Pretty difficult to compare two different genres of games. Do you prefer open world or platformers
I think at this point I will not buy the game no matter what EA does with their MT system in the game. They just have not earned any good will. They were going to make a ton of money even if they had zero MT's. But instead, they chose to exploit an already favorable situation for themselves. If this was not a Disney property they would have made no changes. I can only imagine what BIOWARE is being instructed to do with Anthem. Sorry EA, but I'm sitting this one out.
EA has not earned any trust. So pardon me if I wait to see what they actually do with their MT system. Till such time as there is definitive information, my wallet remains closed EA's SW BF2.
Oh my gosh if that is not a clickbait article then I don't know what is. Everyone knows X1X is going nowhere fast.
It's actually not true games are more expensive to make. Publishers have actually been producing fewer games and spend more on marketing than making the games. Downwardthrust did a great analysis of this trend on YT. Don't be fooled into believing these arguments that microtransactions are necessary for the market to survive and prosper. That's just not true. MT's offer very high margin profits for publishers and that is why they want to push them. Push more content which sh...
The only way I even consider buying Star Wars BF2 is if they either remove MT system entirely or move to cosmetic items only. Anything else, it's a deal killer for me.
PS4, 1080Ti PC, and a Switch. Don't need an X1X. No games on that platform which I can't play elsewhere.
@Mikelarry I like to think DICE is the good guy here and caught in the crosshairs. But I think that's a bit rose-colored glasses. To think nobody at DICE is partly to blame is probably naive. Probably many of the artists, writers, coders, tests, etc at DICE are just gamers too and delivered top-notch performance in their area of expertise. But clearly, someone at DICE devised this progression system. What a shame. How disappointing. EA's platitudes about free DLC etc etc many mon...
I imagine these investigations caught the eye of Disney who in turn had a talking to with EA. So now EA is scrambling to somehow preserve their MT system and not appear to be exploitative with children.
Frankly, I am surprised Gamespot articulated these points against EA's game. Glad they did. Be curious what their review score will be. If it gets an 8 it is just a sham especially considering the game is so hobbled by their progression system.
Here's what you need to know.
It's $500.
It has a lackluster games lineup.
It's 4K.
MT's not going anywhere? Depends on what you mean by MT's. I think some MT's could be viewed as destructive for a companies product and do more harm than good for their bottom line. I'd like to think randomized loot based MTs related to progression systems like found in SW BF2 are a bridge too far. I think EA thought they could get away with anything. We shouldn't let such articles dissuade us from pushing back and keeping our wallets closed. An article like this tries to...
I also have been playing games for 35+ years. Back in the days when the arcade was social media/networking. I'd say it has been a year of greatness and huge disappointment at the same time.Lots of rehash? yep so true. But I'd also say some of that rehash is also refinement. For example, I played (and continue to play) Larian Studio's Divinity Original Sin 2. Is that a rehash of the ole isometric rpg? To a degree yes but it is also a refinement. It's a brilliant game and for...
Temporarily removing microtransactions is an interesting turn of events but far from any real victory for the gaming consumer public. EA is trying to figure out how they can navigate these waters. Most game publishing companies make the significant portion of the sales revenue at release. So by removing the MT's they hope to quell the concerns people may have upon release and draw everyone in.
Ever heard the saying "come into my den said the spider to the fly&qu...
@Jinger I'm not so sure it's casuals who support MT's. I'd say if your willing to pay2win and keep spending money you are somewhat hardcore. It's clearly important to that consumer to win and not necessarily by earning it through gameplay but by any means necessary. A casual doesn't care if they lose so much. They move on to the next shiny penny. And a whale, well that's another whole league of stupidity. Casuals want to pay a fixed cost and ultimately move off t...
I agree Take-Two will implement loot boxes. Will they be cosmetic only? Will they be pay2win randomized progression based rewards? Who knows. But if RDR2 is a gamer / consumer unfriendly cash grab, then they should receive the same treatment as EA did for SW BF2. I hope this is not the case.
@fenome I completely understand that EA makes money off such mechanisms. However, the MT system in SW BF2 is of a new variety for this genre. Randomized loot for real world money tied to character progression is different. And this is a full priced retail game no less. I think FIFA accounts for a significant proportion of that $1.6 billion you cite. Is SW BF2 the exact same crowd as FIFA? Unlikely. Even a financial site is making note of the problems for EA,

I dunno if the FIFA market is the same as most games. That's one of those games which is all some ppl play all year long. So buying FIFA every year and some small amount of MTs is tolerable for those folks. Sure EA would like every one of their games to be like FIFA but I am not sure that is how it is in reality.
Sincere? Maybe but also some hypocrites too. EA probably just said, "come up with some MT systems proposals which we can review and decide upon". So off goes DICE happily designing exactly what they know gamers won't like. I'm sure they'll happily have their hands out for the bonuses EA bestows if it is successful. So let's not assume some at DICE are not part of the problem.
Yep, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I bought ME:A and was underwhelmed, to say the least. Not going to buy BF2 at this point. I will wait to see what EA/DICE announces for their revamped MT purchase system before I commit any money to that game.
