"The vast majority of even PC gamers can't afford rigs that can every graphical effect at maximum resolution."

I don't think it does even matter. It seems big AAA game life cycle is about a year (~20h gameplay) and then be forgotten.

Broadwell, DDR4, NVidia 800-series, etc. are just behind the corner. In couple of years mediocre laptop is able to play "The Crew" with max settings (1080p) - wouldn't surprised if mobile devices a...

I look forward to have VR especially when I'm playing games like Elite:Dangerous, Star Citizen, X:Rebirth (support?) or Project Cars.

At least to me VR looks fantastic and huge step forward especially in simulation types of games and maybe in FPS games.

OR CV1 (1440p) will will be far from perfect but at least what we have seen about DK2 it will be an excellent VR product. I don't know much about Morpheus but at least according to comments people seem...

ForgottenProphecy: "As for the Steam Controller, they are trying to fix something that isn't broken."

Those who doesn't want to use keyboard and mouse in the living room has no options at the moment. Valve's controller could be a solution to that problem.

It is worth to remember that Valve's controller is not meant to be replace any other controller devices; KB+mouse, joystick, traditional game pads, etc. They are still all meant to be used and working on SteamOS.

I personally think Valve is definitely on the right track. Current analog stick controllers are totally useless in many genres PC has; RTS, grand stategy, complex RPG or even FPS.

It is not going to be easy to make a controller that would work fo...

@jcnba28: I thought you said that you are not able to play Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, etc. with Steam Machine which is not true. You are able to play those games on Steam Machines.

I was interested if you are able to play those games with PS4 or XBox One.

Actually you are able to play Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, etc. Are you able to play those with PS4 or XBox One?

There is a lot of new hardware coming to the market this year so things are going to change better for Steam Machines.

I definitely hope SteamOS is going to be a success on PC side in future and Microsoft would concentrate to consoles. SteamOS is much more open and uses industry de facto open standard which already makes it much more tempting.

@Mithan: Maybe today in games that has ported from consoles. As a programmer and especially people who are working on graphics and media stuff more memory is only good.

Hopefully in future games would start to use PCs capabilities but that's not going to happen for AAA games from Ubisoft, EA, or similar that has to make sure games runs on much lower specs consoles and PCs as well.

PCs would have very strong CPUs for AI for example. I guess it much easier ...

To me SC looks nothing like "Skyrim in space" and that's good. I really disliked how shallow and repetitive Skyrim is.

> now I am disappointed in X-Rebirth......what friggin let down that was.

I like it and it is getting better and better. A new patch should be released soon.

ED, SC and X:R are quite different kind of games and there definitely is room for all of them.

$1600 gaming rig is a bit exaggeration. Intel Broadwell will already have very capable iGPU - even older Iris Pro 5200 [1] is surprisingly good. Intel NUC [2] with Broadwell as a gaming machine could be quite interesting already.

I wouldn't surprised to see gamers having Broadwell + 64G RAM + 12G dGPU(s) gaming rigs next year [3] (of course not just gaming but doing some work as well).

In the same time I enjoy having games that are complex and demanding o...

@timotim: DirectX is strictly dependent on Microsoft systems. OpenGL works on multiple on operating systems and architectures.

SteamOS is open - source code is available. It is easy to work with and develop games for it. I can use Raspberry Pi to write a game that uses OpenGL and works on Linux/Android, Windows, OSX, etc.

Windows Store is another interesting feature, no one knows what MS decides tomorrow and Valve has all reasons to be concerned.
MS d...

I would recommend to read Khronos specifications and plans about OpenGL NG as well.

I'm not sure why anyone would like to have closed PC environment. What you wrote is what Valve probably has feared. Microsoft is able to turn PC like Mac or consoles - totally closed system.

Sony has been developing VR glasses about 20 years. Don't you think they should be years ahead of Kickstarter project Oculus Rift and not other way around?

I hope PC goes towards OpenGL in future. It is an open cross-language, multi-platform and de facto industry standard.

I wouldn't mind if MS would concentrate only XBox One and let PC go towards even more open gaming platform.

Already played beta and it is simply great. I really liked how the development work was done with gamers; very good communication during the development process.

This game is Fallout 3 to me.

These types of games are too slow, complex and less console-friendly for bigger publishers to publish. Fortunately we have Kickstarter and Early Access and they will bring us more of these types of games in near future.

I use SteamOS for gaming and I have to say it is very promising already. It is flexible compared to Windows and easy to develop for - you can even use Raspberry Pi [1].

There are many problems that has to be solved before it could gain any popularity.

One of the biggest problem is OpenGL drivers. Open source drivers are going forward nicely [2] but they...

I would be interested to know which OpenGL version they uses. Unfortunately the original one used OpenGL 3.3 on Linux (thanks Apple!) so if they are using now OpenGL 4.4 it would be quite a huge upgrade. OpenGL 4.5 would be even better but unrealistic.

@The_Infected:

That's nice but not much :). If environment would be dynamic all over the places I would call it great physics.
Well, in the end these games are not about complexity, physics or graphical fidelity but a great experience for gamers who likes hack 'n' slash games.
