This is the DearEsther mod, in source engine.

(there's more screenshots if you snoop around the site)
Valve isn't the dev you go to if you want cutting-edge technological eyecandy. They rely more on art style rather than pushing polygons.
... but that doesn't mean their engine is a slacker.
... it's humour.
I found the blog to be quite an enjoyable read.
... If you want to bring Metascores into this, why not compare them from the same platform?
For PS3:
Resistance3: 83
Killzone3: 84
Rage: 84
If the 360 version has a lower score, shouldn't he be dissing the 360?
Your comment about the ending isn't much of an argument, as Carmack was only answering a question about the PS3 versions performance.
He answered it honestly, and that's it.
...
The whole point of the source engine was to have a modular engine that could be continually upgraded as needed.
Scrapping it altogether for a new source would go against Valve's current philosophy... and the current source engine has done some marvellous things, so there isn't much need to scrap it.
So far the engine has powered HL2, Portal, L4D, AlienSwarm, CS:S & TF2... and it's going to be used in CS:GO and DOTA2 as well (...then there'...
Well, they called it source due to the naming system of development, but it is mostly just a heavily modified version of GoldSrc.
The source engine wasn't built entirely by Valve either.
I guess the main difference is the 'seriousness'.
The BadCompany series is a bit stylized (or cartoony) and it can be seen in the characters and general art design.
The main battlefield series carries a more serious tone, i.e., you won't see a russian medic running around with a red beret.
I've actually liked BC2 better than BF3 so far. As you said, the 'charm' just isn't there, and just feels easier to enjoy when it doesn&...
Isn't that what he said?
"we don’t know of anything we can do to improve ps3 performance much..."
then he lists the problems that they're facing, namely, the memmory limit and IO performance of the RSX.
... his game didn't get universal critical acclaim, so he's decided to diss one specific console?
Yea, that makes sense. >.>
His comments state two things, one of the issues is acknowledged by Sony themselves (i.e. the tight memory) the other, I don't really know much about.
They use it in their teasers.
They seem to be trying to do something similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watc...
... The SquadStories trailers for BC2 was also CGI from what I recall.
@malol
When did 80's become bad on metacritic?
The PS3 version of Rage has the same metacritic as GT5 and Killzone3.
... honestly, I'd say Carmack has more credibility than Metacritic. :D

@Mystic
Carmack had said that Rage was 'arguably' the best looking console game... which isn't too far off from the truth.
Rage's megatexture technology allows for very artistic locations. Sure, if...
^ All PS3 exclusives do not look better than all multiplat games.
You're forgetting games like MAG and Warhawk, among others, which boast gameplay over visuals.
The PS3 does however have the best looking console games. That I can agree with, so you could say it is more powerful.
... but then someone else can say that the PS3 isn't capable of doing cross-game chat, so the 360 is more powerful.
... and then a PC fanboy will list their ri...
^ It doesn't really matter if you don't care about frame-rate.
The point was that you can't compare the visuals of a 30fps game vs the visuals of a game that runs at 60fps... and then say that the 30fps one is pushing the system harder.
You have to take into account the different factors instead of going straight for the graphic comparison.
iD's fame has been mostly due to their engines.
In that regard, they didn't do too poorly with Rage. Having a game look as good as it does while at 60fps on consoles is quite a technical feat... and the megatexture tech does seem interesting for the future.
(I haven't finished Rage yet but I've loved the art design so far while the gameplay does tend to feel uninspired)
Doom3 was similarly quite advanced from an engine point of view in...
@stvn
... but Uncharted 3 doesn't run at 60fps.
And why do people equate computational power to visuals?
There's other things that the hardware is used for, such as destruction, AI and general physics.
Can't say I've experienced many/any of those problems recently.
Played 4 rounds today, was fun.
Betas and demos are not anything new.
(Edit: Well yea... for consoles maybe)
Even for consoles they aren't that new. I remember buying 'demo' discs for the PS1. (Granted, you had to buy them, but they were fairly cheap)
Betas, meh... that's only new because online is a relatively new concept.
Stable net access on a platform -> why not use it to get player input.
I don't see how it makes sense for a twisted metal game.
I might get my fix for a week, but the craving and/or withdrawal symptoms are going to kick in soon after.
I bought TM:Black on released and still played the game every now and then even at the start of the current gen. The challenge of the game always brought me back for more.
They only hurt sales if you release a crappy beta.
... and if a developper cares about getting player input towards improving a game, then a public beta is the way to go... unless if their priority is sales or feel that they already have a fair understanding of what their fans want.
If you're trying to drive a helicopter then you're doing it wrong.
^ I'm playing Rage on PC.
Get a constant 60fps and the game has some of the best visuals-over-performance ratio of any game I've played on my PC so far.
... and this is on an ATI GPU as well.
The launch was a bit rough, but the last patch fixed most of my woes.
Textures also appear fine to me.
I feel like I'm playing in concept art.
Don't see why the game should've been exclusive to 360.
