"If hardware was the limiting factor, shouldn't ever game be up to Uncharted or Gears standards?"

Which standards are those?

Try actually using software that has restrictive DRM before you start backing it up.

^ I probably should've quoted the last sentence of your previous comment since that's what I was referencing. The fact that publishers set those prices reinforced my point that it's not Sony/MS which overprice games on PSN/XBL to appease retailers.

As for the age of the games on IGC, All4One was around half a year old, and the slightly older games like LBP and Infamous2 were still priced at $40 or above (at least where I live). Starhawk is another recent game whic...

^ Doesn't that reinforce my point?

I don't think the main goal is keeping retailers happy.
When the InstantGameCollection was launched, it had games like All4One and Motorstorm (for EU), which retailed for $50. Seeing as how PS+ itself costs $50, that should've made retailers pretty angry... and the recent inclusion of vita would make retailers start fuming seeing as how games which still retail for $40 are now 'free'.

Couple that ...

^ I don't buy that excuse. If Sony was afraid of retailers, they wouldn't be offering 'free' games on PS+ or having cheaper pre-orders than retail.

Usually, the prices are dictated by the publisher, and the publisher keeps the price high for their own greed. It's why Steam's prices aren't that different from retail either(aside from specific sales).
Not much to do with appeasing retailers, considering that the retailer will only hurt themse...

I think the fact that movies are not an interactive medium just makes it that much more difficult for the movie to top a game.

At least when something goes from a book to a movie, you're adding imagery to an existing work of fiction.
When going from a game to a movie, there is the obvious question of why they couldn't have just made another game. The movie has to somehow make up for that fact that it is shorter than a game and lacks the interactivity (which is...

It might just be a limitation to keep the save file size small.
Same thing happens with remote explosives as well. Reloading a save file will make you re-obtain the thrown explosive.

I'm not sure if I like or hate checkpoints in games. It is more restrictive than manual/quick saves, but it also makes the game more interesting by forcing you to fight out of 'failed' situations rather than compulsively reloading to a previous save.

^ It is still a sandbox.

For the more classic type of gameplay, there's contracts mode.

Hmm, I was under the impression that instinct doesn't deplete if you're using it to scan the environment (under the Normal difficulty at least)
It only gets consumed when you're trying to 'blend in' or point-shoot.

So it can act as an unlimited-use 3D map, but you sacrifice the shorter range for being able to see the trajectory of NPCs.

" And anyone who doesn't know who he is doesn't care which Dante he is so how is that free advertising?"

... it's free advertising because now people are aware of who Dante is.

Advertising isn't just about telling people flatly to buy a certain product, it's about telling them that a certain product exists and/or getting people interested in the product. To that extent, BattleRoyale does act as advertising for upcoming games.

Here's a better gallery from the beta: http://imgur.com/a/kC4bd

Planetside2 itself isn't a taxing game visually. It does demand a strong CPU though, due to the scale of the game.

When it comes to next-gen, I'd expect launch titles to have similar visuals at 1080p.

Well, it seems to be an expansion of the existing Eidos studio, which was responsible for DeusEx:HR, and who're working on a new Thief game.

So maybe it's not that bad.

Absolution already felt a lot like HumanRevolution during general gameplay anyways. There's a greater emphasis on cover-jumping stealth, and the levels had distinct side-routes rather than the sandbox approach of previous games.

"Bioshock 1 will come with Bioshock Infinite."

Just some random musing, but I kept reading that as meaning:
Bioshock1 will come with a free copy of Bioshock Inifinite

Ambiguous statements are fun.

^ Those points, I can agree with.
Fighting being complex is a positive in my book, and the menu complaints are indeed silly.

Overall, it seems the reviewer couldn't understand the concept of a cartoonish-looking game also being competitive.

Only thing I disagree with you is about the review's first line stating his intentions. I think you're reading too much into it. He was just stating a general perspective that a large group of people ha...

^ Why does that statement make the review stop being objective?

If the reviewer loved Smash, then he would surely like a game that takes inspiration from it, no?
It arguably puts him in a better position to judge the game because he's already a fan of the genre.

Anyways, when does the reviewer even state that? His opening sentence isn't a negative jab at BattleRoyale. He just says that it is easy to be cynical and assume it is a cheap knock-of...

"Is it that hard to judge the game on its own merits rather than have every idea of the game compared to SSB? If SSB did not exist how is the game? See...simple."

That's not how reviews work. One of the things a review should do is tell you how well the game stacks against the competition, or at the very least, use the competition as context for the new game's achievements.

Game X might have decent visuals and fun gameplay, but if there is a...
