Interesting article. Personally I had no problem with developers charging an online pass fee for used multi-player games to cover the server costs. Once they started using online passes for single player games though, I started to wonder.

Still I don't have a huge problem with developers finding a way to make money off of their used games. It would definitely be better if they could find a way to deal with used games that would benefit everybody rather than just bloc...

Though I am very much against piracy, I will not be purchasing any single player game that require a continuous online connection to play. I have no desire to give my money to any company that treats me like a thief for supporting them.

Sadly this kind of thing will only grow since there are so many fools out their that will bend over and take it, throwing their rights down the toilet because they have to have their "entertainment."

The crash at the end of '83 was actually the second video game crash. The first one happened at the end of the 70's when the market was over flooded with dedicated consoles.

"Today, there are still many bad games out there, but I believe that because of channels like the internet, game reviews, rentals and social media, people can find out if a game is good, bad or popular. There is more choice!..."

Sometimes you still can't find out if a ...

Personally I think that both the DD and physical retail will continue to co-exist. While DD may increase, there will always be a market for physical media and as long as the market exists, there will be people who will take advantage of it.

The people who are preaching a total digital distribution future can't see the whole picture. When you look at all the elements that have to come together for 100% DD world, such a world would likely never exist, or at least not in t...

I play games to relax. When I want to get off my butt and do something exertive, I head outside and enjoy various sports.

After a long hard day, I want to relax in a comfortable chair with a good game, not jump around in front of the TV like a dumb monkey.

I can't help wondering if it's just the market being over saturated with MMOs. Due the the time and money demanding nature of the genre, the average gamer probably does not invest in more than one MMO at a time. Of course this is speculation on my part, but perhaps with so many MMOs coming out, developers are spreading their audience too thin.

I loved the original and would love to see a true sequel, but I'd be a lot happier to hear that it was coming to the Wii U instead of the 3DS. I have nothing against handhelds, but due to the time consuming nature of RPGs, I'd much rather play them on a TV in the comfort of my easy chair.

In the US it is completely legal to loan a physical copy of anything you have purchased to a friend or family member, be it a book. movie or video game as long as you are not making duplicates. In other words as long the video game is only being used one person at any given time, it is not illegal.

As for UELAs, it's questionable how binding they are as real contracts require agreement from both parties before money changes hands. Since most forms of video games are not...

The destruction of the used game market for PCs has not benefited the PC gamer in any way. If fact things have only gotten worse, especially in the DRM department.

@edonus: After the used PC game market ceased to be, PC games got more expensive than ever. A new PC game today costs almost twice as much as they did when the used PC game market was around. What makes you think it will be any different for the console market?

It is never an improvement for th...

I also see where both you and TerroristV are coming from and as I mentioned, there are exceptions. It's wonderful when a game can be both fun and considered art. For instant, I remember playing Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker and having a ball, but also greatly enjoying the art.

My problem is that we see too many crummy games being passed off as art to justify their purchase. I certainly think there is a place for art in games, but it should not be used as an excuse for...

No it will just draw away a lot of the casuals, which means console game companies will have to go back to putting more effort in to catering to the core crowd which provide their real support. As companies began to realize this, things should only improve for those of us who make a hobby of gaming.

Gamers desire their games to be an art-form? To be honest, I hate it when developers start referring to their games as an art-form. It's usually nothing but an excuse for putting out a game that isn't very fun to play. (Though there are the occasional exceptions.)

Don't get me wrong, I love art and am a professional artist, but when I buy a game, I want to be entertained, fun is my first concern. When I want art, I buy a painting or sculpture.

If they can get away with this kind of thing on iOS devices, how long until they start pulling this sort of thing on other platforms?

Limited installs and online passes are also couple of nasty trends that EA started among others. Hopefully this doesn't become another.

If true, I'm not surprised as the market is way over saturated with FPS.

I fully agree with you on 6 and 9, though I also liked 12 quite a bit myself. 6 was my favorite on the SNES, 9 my favorite of the ones on PSX and 12 my favorite of the PS2 choices. I've yet to see a FF on the PS3 that I like.

Though I buy used games that are out of production all the time, as I am a collector, I rarely buy new releases, used. However I have been guilty on occasion of buying a game used due to being angry with a publisher (usually over matters concerning draconian DRMs and frankly if they are going to treat me like a criminal for buying their product, why should I support them?)

This writer makes a good point. As both a console and PC gamer, I have first hand seen the used game ma...

Though I have no problem with PS+ and those who choose to use it, it's definitely not for me. I tend to prefer buying my games with as few strings attached as possible.

As long as someone knows what they are getting with PS+ and are fine with it, that's their choice, but sometimes I wonder if Sony is making the terms of PS+ as clear as they should be.

I couldn't read the article because the link seems to be dead at the moment, but speed versus size is a real problem. Games keep growing in size and not everyone is lucky enough to have the kind of speed needed to easily download some of these larger games. Today it is not uncommon to see games that are over 10gb in size and it's only going to get larger.

I live in the country and have what's considered a pretty good internet speed in my area, but it still takes...

Funny article, I enjoyed the read. That said, we play games to escape from reality for a little while, so there's no reason they should confirm with reality. Still it's always funny to compare game norms with real world norms.

Funny to see this article as I was just thinking about Shenmue earlier today and what games bared similarities. Sadly my Dreamcast died last summer so I'm hopping Sega will get around to popping these two games on PSN.

I've been aware of Yakuza, but have never checked it out as I don't really get much fun out of playing a bad guy or a criminal (though I do enjoy open world games were you can go either way, like the Infamous games and Skyrim,) though I may check o...
