As a retro gamer and collector, I enjoy collecting and playing games from the 80's and 90's and if the used game market is destroyed in such a way as this patent suggests, I feel very sorry for future game collectors. While a few games that manage to receve cult status will be sold over and over again, many a diamond in the rough will be lost to obscurity. It's sad that so many developers are more concerned about the used game market than preserving their work.
Thanks for the civil response. You make some good points. I was wondering if you took memory speed into account with those prices? I having trouble finding any multi channel DDR3 memory at that price myself (for fast fps, memory speed just as if not more important than quantity, so it needs to be at least DDR3) Still, if you take even those numbers at mass production, it can add a lot to the cost. At those prices, if a company was, say producing a million units, changi...
Attacking someone because their opininion doesn't tickle your ears is so immature that it's almost funny. Anyone has all the rights they want to disagree with me, but there's no need to get hostile about it. Personally I'd be happy myself if I'm wrong, but anyone who is implying that I don't know what I'm talking about have obviously never bothered to study or compare the console releases of the past. Go do that and I'll be happy to debate th...
People can dream I guess. In mass production, every little bit really adds up. A game system with 8 gigs of ram would really drive the costs up. It's granted that Sony and MS are going to take a loss on the sale of each unit, so they are going to try to keep that loss as low as possible. More than likely, both companies originally planned to release the next systems with 1 gig, but with The Wii U coming out with 2 gigs, they'll have to at least match that if they don't want a ...
Though I love my iPad, I do accept it's limitations. The touch screen is great for some genres, but fast action games espeasily ones in 3D isn't one of them. I was tempted to grab this but remembering how hard it was to control on the Dreamcast, I realized that this was going to be a beast to control on an iOS device. Had they offered the option to support external controllers, I would have been all over this game. But I've never known Sega to offer support for external control...
The only ones on that list that I hadn't heard of were the Japan only ones. I had picked up Jade Cacoon back then because I thought it looked like a Studio Gibli movie, but IMO the game itself wasn't very good. My nephew had that Bave Fencer game, but I never got it myself, though I played his copy. I remember reading about The Neverhood, but never came across a copy of it in the stores. If you had a PSX during it's gen and were serious about gaming, I think it's highly un...
I picked it up to play after I finish Xenoblade which I am 170 hrs into and still enjoying. I did take a look at it and though Xenoblade is definitely my favorite RPG to come out of his gen, The Last Story looks pretty good too. Both games do things that I didn't think was possible on the Wii. I probably won't grab a Wii U until this coming summer as I personally don't think it pays to be an early adopter, but I can say in the meantime, the Wii has really been going out with a ban...
People don't like it because it's a closed operating system. Personally I like my computer being an open system and would rather move to Linux than turn it into a close system.
I can't believe how often I hear people saying they want their games short, simple and dumbed down just because they have jobs. I may not always have time to game, but when I do, I still like challenging games that require some though and skill on my part. If your time is limited, most games have a save feature. If someone wants entertainment that requires no effort on their part, there's always movies, TV and books.
Ff13 nearly destroyed my faith in JRPGs, it's so terrible, I certainly didn't waste my money on the sequal. Fortunately Xenoblade restored my faith in JRPGs Xenoblade Is definately the best JRPG to come out of this generation and one of the best of all time. It's everything FF should have been this gen and even if you don't play Wii games much, it's worth having a Wii for this game alone.
Though personally not a huge fan of these games myself, there is nothing stupid about people playing a game that they have fun with, regardless of the platform or genre.
The stupid ones are kids who think any one who doesn't share their tastes is stupid.
Though I game on everything, consoles, tablets, phones, I'm primarily a PC gamer and while I mostly agree with this article, I can't say things are any rosier on the PC right now. New innovative AAA titles on the PC have been few and far between. If it weren't for Indy developers, I would say that PC gaming was fully in the same boat as consoles.
Actually they weren't. I play imported games on my unmodded SNES all the time. On the SNES and N64 all you have to do to play imported games is remove some small plastic pegs in the cartridge slots. I think the GameCube is the first Nintendo home system with true coded in region lock.
It amuses me the dream world that a lot of gamers live in in I see them saying thing like DVDs and Blurays selling poorly. Do you honestly think big businesses like Walmart would devote so much store space to them if they sold poorly? Just because you're only streaming movies now, doesn't mean everyone is. A lot of people don't even have a decent enough connection to stream HD. Others will watch a movie or show they really like and run out and buy the DVD or Bluray afterwards....
I'm really excited about the Wii U, but will probably wait a while myself before grabbing it. There's not a whole lot coming out for it yet that interest me that I can't already play on consoles I already own. I'll probably grab one when summer comes back around And I have a better idea of what exclusives to expect for the system. Fanboys love to say that exclusives don't matter anymore, but in this day where multiplat games are the majority, it's really what exclusi...
Journey is a lot of fun to play. I enjoy playing a game of it every now and then. Each trip has been quite different for me, some short while other longer. That last leg up the mountain is really interesting, especially if you've teamed up with someone and are helping each other along. I really don't think those who play it through one time and dismiss it, really "get it."
That Lilli RPG looks like it will be fun. I'm really looking forward to when my new iPhone arrives. Though I know physical controless gaming is not for everyone, I've never had a problem with it and it is my preferred gaming device on the go when I'm away from my big consoles and pc.
I couldn't even read the article, as some annoying Facebook tab kept comming up over the text on the left side f the screen. After wasting a few minutes trying to get rid of it and failing to do so, I just gave up and closed the web page, wishing I'd never wasted clicking on it.
Being a Christian, I tend to be turned off by games that have a lot of using the Lord's name in vain and I don't like it when games start dropping f-bombs all over the place. It seems like it's taboo to pick on any other religion except Christianity. Furtunatly most of the time it's pretty easy to tell what games are going to be doing this before purchase, so I don't end up with games that offend me very often.
The thing that I find most insulting is that M$ is basically saying that all consumers are criminals that need to be checked on every 24 hours. I see no reason to pay some company to treat me like I'm under house arrest.
@CerebralAssassin, to answer your question, when a gamer knowingly supports something that encourages loss of our rights as a consumer and a gamer, they're really no better than a scab and that gets people angry. They have the freedom to do so, but d...
