I think your prediction vastly overestimates the efficiency gains of a console platform.

Just one glance at an old PC GPU like an 8800GTX which still kicks console arse proves that console optimisation gains are not this huge, huge leap.

8800GTX for example is something like 2-2.5x as fast as Xenos and RSX in theory, and it is usually quite close to this in practice in a decently optimised PC game- even to this day.

In short, you don't ge...

You'll find that since those 3GB+ cards have been on the market for the past year or so, a couple million have been sold.

That's a couple million more than PS4....

Of course, that's logical. By the time PS4 even arrives it'll be even more commonplace, we can expect total revisions of PC hardware within just a couple months.

PS4 will probably have 7Gb available, and maybe 3.5Gb for video memory. It is still close to a 50/50 spl...

I don't think PC gamers fail to grasp that a mildly modified AMD GPU is still a midrange GPU, and not suddenly some 4 billion transistor beast just because it has minor tweaks to help it get along better with the memory design inside PS4.

1.8 teraflops tweaked design is still 1.8 teraflops, not 2.5 teraflops, or 3 or 4. A Toyota MR2 with a fibre glass Ferrari bodykit is no more a Ferrari for it no matter what that swarthy gentleman inside the used car dealer says.

If the next Xbox is slower than PS4 and Microsoft know it is, they won't go into a technical run down. They will avoid it.

They won't want to get into a horsepower battle in the press, if they know they are going to lose.

Smart PR is to focus on your own strengths and your own aims. Draw your own battle lines, fight the competition where you choose and prefer, pick your own battles.

Microsoft will surely emphasise their online feature...

It was an oversimplification necessary for my post not to get longer and longer on matters that aren't hugely relevant to this discussion.

I know plenty about GPGPU to understand that the situation is more complex.

Probably why I said PARTLY because console CPU performance has been pretty poor, rather than ONLY. Pointless lecturing me when I know alllllllllll about it hesido. Yawn.

Console CPU performance has been a factor however, GPGPU ...

The CPU will probably want at least 20GB/s.

Games are increasingly GPU bound partly because console CPU performance has been pretty poor. Just weak general purpose performance from the RISC processors in PS3 and 360.

PS4 has no magic tweaks to save the latency problems that the CPU will have, programmers will just have to deal with it as they have to, compromise...compromise. It is exactly as I said.

The best thing is just it is simple x86 ar...

Did he mention the disadvantages of unifed memory like having to share memory bandwidth with the CPU and having very poor latency on CPU fetch which is a critical operation for CPU performance?

PS4 looks like it a much better more rounded machine than PS3 was. But everything is always a compromise, and everything is built to a budget.

Radeon 7870 is 2.56 Teraflops, PS4 is 1.8 Teraflops.

Radeon 7870 costs (right now and it'll be less by the time PS4 arrives) $200.

Ps4 will probably cost at the very least $400, more like $450-500 for the better models.

Whats your point??? I can write the above and it doesn't mean a lot.

There are millions upon millions of PC gaming machines now that are more powerful than PS4 is before it even tips up. Its just a fac...

Project Cars looks amazing. It looks like a next gen console game on PC already so not really tough for it.

High end PC games now look at least as good if not better than launch next gen consoles game will.

PS3 is exceptional.

Exceptionally old alright and Xbox 360 even more so.

By that I mean these consoles have been around longer because of conspiring circumstances. By any other generation they would have been replaced 18 months ago.

For me, I wanted to move on but the manufacturers didn't. So I bought a new PC.

My problem was also that these consoles lasted longer but also stayed more expensive for longer. After 5 years P...

The ignorance in this thread is utterly mind blowing, and does kinda show me why PC gamers go to talk to console gamers, because most consoles gamers seemingly are clueless always about hardware and PC, but PC gamers have a much better knowledge of consoles...

Always the same arguments from console gamers that are always easily debunked. Oh you must upgrade all the time...no. If the benchmark is your console, I can easily build a PC better and it'll still be better years ...

Sort the PC version, dump it mostly across onto next gen consoles with tweaks. It could actually launch alongside a PC version to kick up more publicity again. Give it 6 months after the launch on existing hardware and it can be done.

Yes minimum spec evolves.... It always has. It isn't difficult and the step between ps3 and ps4 for example is smaller than it was from ps2 to ps3.

It is fairly easy to understand that the average PC gamer now has a machine that is well ahead of current consoles. So the step you imagine between one console generation and another is nothing much to a PC gamer even one with less than cutting edge gear.

Even if said PC gamer has dated hardware like a core 2 ...

PC holds nothing back. Devs build a game, if you don't have minimum specs to cope with it then tough. Devs TRY to build games to run on a wide variety of machines but don't worry much about putting a game out there before the technology is widespread even for PC. They aren't scared. Let's face it Crysis came out and the technology to actually run it maxed was years away for 99 percent of PC gamers, although the higher settings were within reach for many and still looked amazin...

PS4 is a midrange gaming PC at best. It's a fact. While benefitting from some fixed platform advantages it will still never be as fast as a good PC.

PC gamers are just disappointed about people falling for the hype that is so blatantly obvious.... That the machine is high end. When it isn't. And never will be. Hype hype hype.

See through the hype.

Get excited about PS4 exclusives and dismiss the idea that PS4 is somehow gonna kill ...

Sorry Raigun but it doesn't remove the fact that PC gaming would exist pretty much as we know it now without consoles existing but the reverse is just impossible.

Console and console gaming owes virtually everything to PC and not vice versa.

PC gaming is the one pushing the technology and the boundaries and even game play with indie titles that genuinely advance the art.

Consoles are for the mass market. They are designed to be cheaper fo...

Hesido, unity stats is a stupid slanted way to look at games hardware. Unity is designed for just in browser games etc, casual stuff not really core games.

At least look at the hardware surveys of something like Steam, which is a app that PC gamers use a lot, instead of some niche software most PC gamers I know don't even have installed.

Why even bring up PC?

A good PC will still be easily faster than PS4 on multiplatform games despite there being claims of 'no bottlenecks' from a Sony dev whose goal is also to hype the machine. Would it cost more initially? Probably. Would it be faster? Don't believe anyone who says one wouldn't.

PS4 exclusive games are what matters most.

They are often similar, but they aren't identical.

The fact that the question usually seeks specifics about will there be problems for one version or another and they just fob people off with saying it'll be the same.

Except there are countless examples of poorer Ps3 versions or poorer 360 version when devs have assured they will be the same. The likes of Mafia 2 or Bayonetta come instantly to mind

How close is close?

Close is an unquantifiable measure.

For the past 7 years of this generation all I have heard developer PR idiots tell us is that ALL the versions are 'identical'

Clearly this has been nonsense and yet we are expected to believe it. The 360 and Ps3 versions have infamously been quite different in visual and performance aspects of several games and the Pc version is on another level of resolution and performance hard...
