I think that's a vast exageration chris.
Below 1k is my guess.
@Dubaman
To me it felt like they are shifting their efforts and resources towards other projects and away from WiiU and in parts even from 3DS. They have this collaboration with DeNa (was it DeNa) going, the NX announced and so on. WiiU on the other hand has a small installbase. From a business perspective it could be a smart move. History will tell.
As a gamer and owner of WiiU, I feel pretty dissapointed though.
Who knows what they were thinking, if at all. Maybe their staff was still tripping on mushrooms after the 30th anniversary party of Mario (the stuff is legal in Japan btw).
No seriously: I think they wanted to circumvent direct competition and focused on their family friendly image ... but E3 ... whatever.
It's propably in the awesome process of ... "Transformation".
On a positive note: mabe we get a strong lineup for the NX from the beginning. (If it actually turns out to be a console.)
But I agree, dissapointing show for WiiU.
I thought the video is stuck and loading ...
Seems like all big players pulling in the same direction - generally - to make VR a success.
Good move. Should have been there from the beginning, though.
It's more like microsoft bringing their console closer to PC gaming.
Just watched it on youtube. Good fun!
... just discard the "whole industry" from my comment. It wasn't meant to be an unfair gerneralization. But you have to admit that there is a trend to ports and remasters lately, in parts due to the missing backwards compatibiliy of PS4 and X1. I also don't think remasters are a bad idea: fairly priced and well made they are an enrichment to modern gaming culture. But it comes across, as if the effort and money put into these takes away from creative and riskier investments....
I don't think the remasters are the problem, but the missing focus on new content. A trend for the whole industry, since this gens hardware released. It's economically understandable, but also a bit lazy imo.
Apples are tasty ... but mine never announced anything to me :/
Edit: ... nor cared about context. ;)
No company is carrying the entire industry ...
A more intersting question is, who would be the premiere trend setter of today?
If you ask me, it's the indies, since all big developers and companys play it safe today. It's all about margins and returning investments by following known and successfull design patterns. Most creative stuff starts small these days. Nintendo is in parts a nice exception of this trend by the way.
It's just a PC in a nice case. Not so much different like PS4 and X1. You can run on it SteamOS, Win10 or every other OS you prefer. Most will be upgradable: CPU, RAM, graphics ... maybe even Mobos.
Give it 18 month. The prices will drop and the recent consoles will look like lastgen tech.
VR might be the big chance for the Steammachines to take off.
X1 and PS4 specs are too low to deliver a good VR experience.
So even if Steammachines will be to expensive this and maybe next year. 18-24 month from now prices will drop and consumers will get vastly more powerfull "consoles" for their money compared to PS4 and X1. My guess - it will be a short console cycle this time ... and Microsoft getting out of that business at all - focusing on Win10 and a steamli...
I said from the beginning about the WiiU: I really don't need the multiplats on another platform.
My gripe is, that publishers and developers had a chance to create fresh, exclusive gaming experiences by using the gamepad. They did let that chance pass.
I am not talking about multimillion AAA titles here, more about well produced, creative stuff ... doesn't need to be graphical epitomes. Strategy games, cool couch coop games, tower defense, hunt and run ... wh...
I am very happy with the WiiU as well. Espescially for couch coop. Beside my PC library there is only bloodborne and the halo collection I am currently somewhat eager to play.
Not enough games for me on PS4/X1 to jump on yet ...
Mark my words: Since console gaming shifted towards X86 hardware, the future fight will take place between Operating Systems or distribution platforms. Win10 and SteamOS are the big hitters the next decade.
Project Quantum is an example for "consolized" PCs. More and more firms going that direction. I wouldn't even wonder, if the next Nintendo console will be based on X86, open it up for easy third party development.
With VR coming in, it really...
