Well this game blew up quick. Where are all the nay-sayers now. I'm so happy for HouseMarque, proud of what they were able to accomplish. It must have really been a tough sell, I would love to hear the initial pitch to Sony, and I would love to know who green-lit the project. I wonder if it was Shuhei or Layden. Either way it was a massively good call giving Housemarque a shot at the top.
At the time of writing Returnal is sold out at Amazon UK and sold out at GAME ...
Right now Returnal is sold out at Amazon UK - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pl...
So I guess to us in the UK at least, the answer is a resounding "yes it's worth it!"
Yeah, you should probably put less import on what others think, and experience the game for yourself. Demon Souls isn't that hard once you understand the system.
I think the game would be way too frenetic for gyro aiming, whie at the same time jumping, dashing and swinging the camera around to see and avoid enemy fire. More static games would be better suited for gyro aiming.
Quote - "Returnal is doing things with the DualSense controller that I’ve never experienced in a game, and it’s yet another indication that the controller may be the best part of the PlayStation 5 hardware."
Woah, very high praise indeed. Especially when it's coming from the likes of Polygaon (and Kotaku).
Yeah, well.. I've hard a few xbox fans making this claim and honestly... it's not really a fair comparison. But I'll reserve judgement until review scores are out for Returnal, but the way it's trending it's going to blow ReCore's metacritic rating out the water. Basically it's looking to be a much better game all round.
That's fair enough, and is pretty straigh forward.
To be honest, the only rogue like/lite I've played is Spelunky. And that's really because my kids make me play it with them. So I have no real history with rogue likes. I saw all the hype with Hades and Dead Cells etc, but in all honestly, it never even nudged the needle for me. I just wasn't interested in the genre, and I still haven't played any of those games.
With Returnal though, ...
I really never understood the strategy of releasing a gated limited timed demo in the way that they did. It really is just an attempt to build last minute-rush-hype. But the timings were so poorly thought out that it just backfired, with the majority of people simply not bothering with it. A game where one of the core mechanics is finding concealed items and taking time to figure out puzzles - it's just counter intuititve to make players rush through it. And then lock them out of being ab...
I think you misunderstand permadeath. Im Permadeath mode, when you die, the game ends. Fulls stop.
That's not the case with Returnal - or rogue-likes / rogue-lites in general.
If you don't like rogue likes, then I can't understand why you were ever interested in Returnal in the first place. It was always billed as a rogue-lite with "random dungeons/levels, and constant repeats." If that drives you crazy, then what was it that made it a "...
That's really interesting, I hadn't noticed that before. It's supposed to be PS5 exclusive. It wouldn't surprise me though if Sony released a PS4 version of the game. I'm pretty sure the game can run of PS4 - it just won't be 4K 60fps, and Raytracing will definately have to be off..
yeah, I also think te#he review scores will average out at about 80-85. I hope I'm wrong and it scores higher. But I'm sceptical of game journailsts and their click bait agendas. I'm sure they'll find something to chew on, and I'm willing to bet it'll either be the price of the game or it's length. If it's 10hrs or under, I can see review sites making a song and dance about the value proposition.
Woah, steady on there tiger. Who did I call a racist? When did I even mention racism?
And you assumed I was offended, which missed the point of my original post completely, because you fixated on comments I made about Days Gone, and lost the overarching point I was making about Returnal and it's apparent late review embargo.
Contrary to what you claim, I never said I liked or disliked Days Gone, neiither did I mention anyting about the review score fo...
Wow, your wall of txt suggests that you're way more offended about my comment than you think I am about embargoes. I don't even know what your point is. So why do you think Days Gone review embargo was the day before release? I think It's because the previews were generating bad PR, but what do you think. Please enlighten me.
I can't speak for other people, but for me I'm hyped because I've played most of HouseMarque's previosu games and loved them. Now, apart from Spelunky, I honestly havent played any other 'rogue-likes', but it's not the genre that interests me about this game, as much as it's just the gamplay mechanics themselves, coupled with the bullet hell elements. Add to that the setting and the story, and I'm completely sold.
An Analogue for me is Do...
Beyond Spelunky, I actually havent played any other rogue-likes, but it's not primarily the genre that makes me excited to play Returnal, it's a combination of the devs pedigree, as well as the setting and the story, but I think the biggets draw is the moment-to-moment gameplay. If this was a straight 3rd person bullet hell shooter with no roguelike elements, I would still be just as excited for the game. I loved Doom Eternal and completed that game on ultra-violence, and anyone who...
I think you'll find that the buzz is generally positive, especially as the early previews are practically unanimous in their prasie for Returnal, that buzz will naturally cascasde to the respective audiences.
It doesn't surprise me that publishers like Sony release review embargoes closer and closer to release. Game journalist have a habit of virtue signalling and exacerbating extenuous issues in their game reviews. It's been going on for a long time, but I still remember the whole issue with Days Gone and just how many game jounalists took issue with the fact that the main protagonist was a white male - as if that had anything to do with the quality of the game; and completely ignoring to...
Looks like lots of social media activity for Returnal just before launch - which is good on the one hand, but honestly I haven't yet seen a single TV, Youtube or Billboard ad for this game, I hope Sony market it well and doesn't just leave the promotion to word of mouth to get the message out there. I know the hype train is in full swing - heck I've already bought my ticket and am onboard all the way to Atropos; but Sony really need to advertise this game beyond just the blog post...
Great interview, even though at times it was obviously a plug for unreal engine. I do hope they get to make another game in this universe. Seeing as EA are flat out refusing to do anything with the Dead Space series - a Returnal franchise will do nicely.
Ooh someone's jealous.
Don't do it man, you'll just validate the game even more.
Wait, what am I saying... scrap that. On second thoughts, dude go ahead, knock yourself out, go all in.
...If only you could see the smug grin on my face right now
