That is just the worst, most cynical, fatalistic, pseudo-intellectual get-out clause attitude ever.
Violence and its occurence is a product of cultural, social, and economic influences. In some cases, it's just aberrant psychology. These things produce behaviour - set rules for how we behave. We impose our limited conceptions of reality upon reality itself and take them AS reality itself.
In fact, the philosophy you're espousing is merely that of impe...
It's true. People need to stop denying the impact of culture and the artifacts therein.
I'm not saying videogames are solely to blame for things like this, how could they be? But they certainly figure into larger psychological, cultural, and economic pictures.
Many games through representation glorify and reward violence, not to mention fetishising the tools provided to deal it. The ubiquity of such treatment necessarily has cultural effects, especial...
Take part of the name from the Chrono series, take a term from a Final Fantasy game, and make use of an obscure term or terms from a more obscure, yet cult jrpg (which in this case is Valkyrie Profile, i.e. Lezard's Valkyrie homunculus) and hey presto! You've got the title and some of the first concepts for your generic jrpg!
Oh and don't forget to style your characters in an archetypal manner and with the appearance of every anime character ever.

It'd be kind of funny if GTA V turned out to have F1 cars in it.
I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. Rockstar Toronto haven't really had significant roles in the creation of any Rockstar games. They mostly port titles, like Manhunt 2 and Bully to the Wii, and GTA IV and it's episodes to the PC. They had a small role in making Max Payne 3, but the only title they had major input on was The Warriors.
I can't imagine this being a new Red Dead or anything. Maybe like a GTA title for the Vita. San Andreas Stories or Los Santos ...
In fairness, what message does capturing (what are essentially) animals and making them fight other animals as well as making them do your bidding, send out to kids?
Not to mention that the world of Pokemon is so mindlessly divorced from any political issue whatsoever, which makes the actual central concept seem less sinister. However, it's sinister in itself that the game is so simplistic.
I know it's all about companionship and granted the latest g...
Yeah, this is pretty much the problem. It has other ramifications too, such as CoD and gamer conservatism. Gamers get fed this AAA crap and come to think that they're what games are about. Anything that doesn't resemble the AAA titles they're so used, and which they've been brainwashed into thinking are the pinnacle of gaming, is seen as weird and shit. This makes it too financially risky for anyone to make an original and idiosyncratic game because it'll go ignored by the...
Sounds like they've put a lot of thought into it. I for one find something pretty awesome about separate fictional universes crossing over in really deep and convincing ways. The narrative possibilities are endless. Dissidia kind of tried it, but since it was first and foremost a fighting game it seemed to struggle to work the narrative into the game. This sounds like it'll expound the whole parallel world thing in a much more interesting way.
While it is obviously pa...
Brucis: Nothing wrong with S&M (which is not the same as rape simulation). Some people just dig that. But wanting to simulate rape? Why would someone want that? What sort of impulse is it that makes someone want to simulate sexual assualt?
Sure people can consensually engage in such simulation, but at what point does such a simulation become a weird kind of reality? The person is still acting on impulses that characterise rape, that's the point of the simulation. It...
Finally some sense.
I know such things aren't "real" per se, but they still contribute to a culture of rape acceptance, at least to the degree of fantasy, and that's not okay.
Such things certainly don't nip the rape problem in the bud, they only redirect it, and in some cases, contribute to it. What's annoying is that such things just show blatant disregard for trying to banish rape from society altogether. It's so cynical. <...
Doesn't mean it isn't there. It seems pretty apparent to me that sexism exists in Japan. I mean, rape hentai of all descriptions is widespread there. Of course such things exist in the west, but not to the degree that they do in Japan. If anything, the fact that it's considered a non-issue is a bit worrying. That says to me that people have been made believe it's not an issue - that it's been systemically brushed under the carpet, and that denial of it has been incorporate...
In some cases, i.e. those quotes, it definitely is sexism. But most people I've seen are just bemoaning the fact that she has no clue about video games and probably isn't right for the job. Then again Microsoft ARE pushing the whole TV / media hub thing so perhaps she'll work for that.
I'm not a "Nintendo drone" I just respect what they've done for videogames.
"developers need strong enough hardware in order to conceive next gen games"
Says who? What does that even mean? Who's judging this? They "need" it? Can you tell me exactly why games and hardware "need" to get better and better? The only reason they "need" such thigns is because of market trends and consumers who are comple...
So you'd allow a corporation to further impinge on your consumer rights - nay, your human rights, for the sake of some videogames? Are they really that important to you?
DRM means even more power to what are already enormously powerful corporations. It means control over their profits to an unprecedented degree. It means periodical surcharges and licencing fees. It potential then means having to re-buy a game after its licence expires. That's just extortion. Couple th...
I don't own a Wii U, but I wish third parties would make some damn games for it. I hate to see Nintendo lagging behind. The games industry owes Nintendo more than could or would (sadly) ever pay back. Not to mention they still make some of the most innovative games ever. Developers and publishers need to jump off the juvenile, graphics-performance-boner train, coz it's going right off a cliff. You don't need any of that crap to make a good game. There are SNES games that have yet ...
I want the Xbox One to fail because I think it's inaugurating a new generation of gaming based on complete consumer disregard and exploitative corporatism. They're spearheading a campaign that's pushing gaming in the complete wrong direction. I haven't signed the petition, but if it'll help knock Microsoft and their sinister ways out of the game, I'm in. The only thing is, Microsoft have definitely caught wind of this farce by now, meaning it probably won't be ackn...
Chrono, Breath of Fire, Musashi, Persona, Valkyrie Profile, Rogue Galaxy, Vagrant Story. Hopefully.
Neeeeed this so bad.
I appreciate his honesty in this age of deceptive advertisement, but I'd still pick MGS over GTA every time.
Various historical and cultural factors. We're moving closer to a more peaceful civilization. All I'm saying is that games and the media in general are definitely a hurdle. In fact, violence was more grisly in the past because of cultural things we have since overcome. There's still a lot of hangover though, and it manifests itself in our popular culture.
What I'm saying is that videogames, among MANY other things, contribute to a culture that produces violenc...
