Or NPD could just be protecting their product. They made it a new policy not to publicly release numbers a while ago, and people aren't listening apparently. They're well within their rights to do so.
Keep in mind that NPD was never free. It was always a subscription based system that companies used.
I can tell you right now that it will be extremely hard to do so. Nintendo did exceptionally well with the DS, even by their standards. It's usually VERY hard to replicate success like that again.
Would I like it to outsell the DS? You bet. Will I bet on it to do so at this point? Not exactly.
Lack of solid advertizing and a similar form factor is a bad combination for casuals. It sounds crazy, but I think they thought this was just another redesign. And I can't really blame them, either. If I had no knowledge of the thing I would have similar thoughts.

In addition to all that, I think the 3DS didn't recieve the hype that most hardware launches do due to the abrupt announcement. The console recieved maybe 1-2 months of sustained mainstream hype(commercials, talk shows, etc).
Point being that Nintendo was pretty lax in terms of mainstream advertizing IMO. Which makes the slow launch day make a little more sense to me.
I played a demo unit for the first time today and I was mildly impressed with it. You can def. see the 3D and it adds a lot of depth to the games. It's even more apparent when you turn the 3D off and see how much depth goes away. That being said, the 3D isn't very sturdy. At the start of each round of PilotWings, the 3D lost focus for a few seconds before snapping back. It was a little weird. And I wasn't even moving my head or anything. This would be a fantastic system seller. I would rather have it on the PS3, but SE seems to have found a home this gen on portables. They've made a lot of good games there. So having it on the NGP might not be a bad idea.

I have absolutely no concern over weather or not the 3DS is going to sell. It will sell a lot more than that worldwide. I'm not expecting a massive boom right away due to the sloppy way(IMO) that Nintendo handled the launch, but it'll sell enough to have a solid lead built over the NGP by the time it launches. I'm guessing 10-20 million by the end of the year.

I'm a little biased twords the PS3 in terms of consoles and WAY biased twords the DS in the handheld market.

I'm sorry, but exactly how is that relavent when the artical clearly says "americas"? Same for the NPD articles, the "NA=/=world" comments are irrelevant because the main topic of discussion is NA sales.
I think the 3D will enhance the gameplay eventually. Not right away, though, because devs need to learn how to use the tech. This is the DS all over again for me. That system had truly innovative games once people utilized the two screens properly.

Exactly. Nintendo didn't do a very good job of establishing that this wasn't another revision. That combined with the fact that the system looks exactly like a DS except with an analogue slider and a slightly bigger screen.
