The PowerPC cores is basically the same. The PS3 has one, the XB360 CPU has three.
The Cell has 8 SPE's, 1 disabled for yield, 1 used by the OS, 6 available. The XB360 has 2 VMX units.

They just seem to be flooding the news channels with "Save the PS3" stories. Must be a slow news period. Only the secretary left in the news office - so they start publishing the pre-prepared news stories. If the PS3 sold 5 million this period they will still be publishing this tripe.
Oh... just a while ago the articles was whining about the PS3 being a Trojan horse to ensure BR market success - now it is bust????
Now let us look at what is playing out here. Who would benefit from the sudden divorcing PS3 from BR media statements? Hmm... MS BR support announce coming soon? Would make sense.
It is succeeding already. If DLC or HD-DVD had half this market we would be reading articles by these same idiots touting the huge inroads and success. As it is - it is BR - so they try to downplay it. Bias a bit today hmm?

Ninty is known for non standard format - so it might be a BR capacity but not compatible drive.
XBnext will have BR - so in order to:
1) if it is XB360 compatible, then it must be much better to move the devs to the new platform
2) if it has BR, it will need a huge tech jump to not be a PS3 competitor
So - XB360 compatibility and BR might find the XB720 competing against XB360 and PS3 with little incentive for devs to move...

MS is a software company. Their toolchain and compilers is better optimized than the Sony toolchain. Simply a fact of life. Sony uses GCC (modified) for PS3 - which is not the best optimized compiler - although it will do the job. As the toolchain gets better - so will the speed of many elements improve. There is still improvements made to the x86 compilers in terms of optimization - and how old is that platform? Just one of the things with a new platform. Takes time to get the tools right.
I have a launch PS2. Disk read error. Slimline PS2 - scratched the disks a bit - but could be because of extensive use. Still works fine - but shelved. The PS3 is reading the PS2 scratched disks fine - adds no scratches - gets used about 15 hours a day. (Four kids put heavy use on it.) Not a single problem with the PS3 yet. The PS3 quality is way better than the PS2 - that is a fact.
The XB360 is about to be recalled due to the disk scratching and RRoD issues. MS decided to cut the 10% staff not across the board, but just in the XB devision.

iSuppli prices is not Sony prices. I can guarantee you if you buy 10 pieces of plastic it will be double the price than if you buy 1 million. And if you manufacture it yourself in some cases, then the prices drops another 50%.
