I understand your reluctance - there is still a premium to be paid for decent quality 1080P.
I can only sugest you try and find shop where you can demo some screens, but do be aware how badly many shops set their TV's up.
Ignore comments about the differences only being visable on a huge screen, as this is clearly nonsence and a good qulaity 40" panel will clearly show the differences in resolution with a good qulaity source.

An excellent 720 panel> a crap 1080P panel, that's true.
But an excellent 1080P set will beat any 720P set and the difference is clear to anyone.
Pioneer do make some excellent plasma displays with excellent colour and supurb black levels, so they are basically saying 'don't JUST look at the resolution of the panel.'

I like live, its a best of breed service, and its done very well (if you forget about the unfrotunate recent outages.)
But the continual insistance of MS to use it as a revenue earner cannot be disputed. Charging for things like themes, making the the publishers of GOW charge for maps when they didn't want to, and continually making adjustments that ensure you are going to pay, it all shows exactly what's on their mind. Since the launch of the PS3, sites like this one and many web blogs have contained many rants and tirads against the PS3, with so called 'fans' belittleing the merits of the system, its storage medium, its chances of selling any units at all and decreeing it was impossible to program any game on it that could ever rival a top 360 game.

My PS3 remians incredibly quiet whenever i use it for however long? I guess the guy has blocked air vents or faulty fans....

I'm happy some people like to watch movies on their PC - I really am. But the vast majority of people who really wish to enjoy a movie, want to watch it on a large screen 1080P TV set up for the purpose in their living room. I have a whole network of PC's that are all capable of running HD movies with ease, but I have never watched a single movie on them.
Why would anyone moan at a few minutes install time when the pay off is no loadng when you are playing the game?

Theres no question - Blu ray winning the format war WILL affect the 360.
The whole reason Microsoft aligned itself with the HD DVD camp was because it recognised thats Sony's sucess would rely in part on Blu ray becoming an accepted standard. The enormous adoption of the PS2 was partly fueled by the fact it was a DVD player when DVD was trying to take on Video.

The xbox is a stripped down PC made from PC componants, but the PS3 is a completely differently designed architecture. This is all well documented if you could be bothered to look.
Bang for buck, theres not PC anywhere in the world that can match a 360 or a PS3, and to suggest otherwise in the face of the overwhelming eviden...
There's absolutely no way on earth that I could download a 1080P movie with uncompresed sound track through a UK broadband service - never mind the issue of storage.
