There are MANY MORE games apart from the crap EA, Ubi, Acti publish.
Are you sure he hasn't played games like Nier: Automata, Dark Souls/Bloodborne, Persona etc?
Just making sure, because I am pretty sure the writing in those games are more 'adult' than Death Stranding.
Sekiro's story was great. Idk how you are saying, it wasn't even good.
Also how did Days Gone get best story above Sekiro? Sekiro's story was just lovely. Days Gone was okay, not bad, not great.

Sadly, we have only regressed from old school. There still isn't a game that can beat DMC in terms of depth in combat.

The awards became irrelevant the moment DMC5 was omitted. Apex being included was just more poop on the shitfest.
Not putting Nier: Automata is a cardinal sin in such a list.
I don't see a problem. Spiderman movies have the most in your face Sony product placements.
I just see the irony that this game was also produced in part with the help of Sony and wonder how they did not do Sony product placements.

Not to mention, once the world opens up, there is no telling which boss will be encountered first. I have seen people go directly to Gascoigne without ever fighting the Cleric beast inBB. More examples are there later on.
Souls games are much more open than most open-world games in terms of gameplay approach. Even the story is very much open-ended where the player has to pick up on subtle cues to get and complete side quests or get differ...

GOTY awards are a sham. There are actually quite good competitors if you look at games developed by actually passionate people... DMC5, Bloodstained, Sekiro, The Outer Worlds etc
