Story and gameplay. Every since <Ill say FF7, but really hit high gear with X> FF7, its been an arms race to make the best cut-scene.
They focused too heavily on graphics forgot to bring the soul of the games that gave them one of the best names in the industry.

I think there are a few definitions of "Hardcore" depending on your primary genere.
FPS: Hours of multiplayer to achieve highest rank
Adventure: Get all trophies
RPG: Difficult complex battle systems that take awhile to master, or epic story lines with alot going on.
I don't pour hours into multiplayer or games in general, but when I do pick up a game...I want it hard...I want it to be a challenge......
Not a Demon's Souls 2, but I agree with a poster above a Demon "something"...so they aren't bound by the rules they created for Demon's Souls...and can be creative.

The battles on consoles really weren't very good.
Games that take cheap shots at you are not hard (check you "Legendary" or "Hard" mode)...they are cheap.
"Hard" is a product of design. Hard, instead of its usual antonym "soft", in this case is "Casual."
Yes many games this generation are too "Casual." And for one simple reason...they sell...they sell alot...

I'll agree that it isin't choices that necessarily make it an RPG. Heck, I'd like to see a Western developer try its hand at a game with less choices (but certainly SOME) to provide a more definitve tightly written narrative.
Dragon Age Origins is NOT the BEST RPG of this generation, though its pretty good. Best RPG goes to Demon's Souls... (but hey, resonable minds can differ)
Thought the story was better in FO:NV. Dialoge is much more clever.
The bugs in my game aren't GODAWFUL, but its frozen on me twice in 15 hours and has jerks very often.
BUT,
I just can't quit playing. Its better than FO3 IMO. Its more clever.
The writing is better in New Vegas than in F03. It seems subtle, but really pay attention to what you are doing. The quests, the dialoge...everything is just...well....better...more interesting.
We are such a long way from ChronoTrigger, Secret of Mana and FFVI.
