There is no question FFVII paved the way to the "modern" era of JRPG's, but that should not be considered in determining just what is a great game.
FFVII is good. No question about that.
FFVII does not come close to FFVI or Chrono Trigger. Those games are truely masterpieces.
That was excellent.
It was informative, insightful, and really a pretty good speech in general. (From a speech standpoint)
Kefta: Absolutely #1
Myze: Can't agree with you more.
FFVI revisioned (and not with the anime)would be excellent. Narshe, Zozo, the Opera House, Edgar's Castle..all would be incredible. It would be a masterpiece if done correctly.
FFVII would be just fine, but FFVI with its dark stroy, insane charcaters (Kefka...there was no sympathy for that devil), would benefit the most from the upgrade.
Chrono Trigger, the other masterpiece from Squaresoft, would do great ...
I can still hum Terra's theme from FFVI and almost all the other songs.
Same thing with Chrono Trigger.
Excellent Secret of Mana reference to to above poster. Great game
Is it a true masterpiece like Chrono Trigger or FFVI? No, but it's still a great game. One of my favs.
FFVI>FFVII its not even close really
The better argument is which is better Chrono Trigger or FFVI?
I really don't know. I would have to play each again at my age to see the staying power. Those games are truly excellent.
One poster I believe gets to the heart of the issue. It's the interactive aspect of video games. It's why we play them in the first place isin't it? It's not very fun to watch someone play a video game, but it is alot of fun to play them yourself. Why is that? My guess is because it feels like you are doing it.
Now I do agree that people do need to understand that video games are no longer Mario. Many of the people in power bought their kids a NES, but have not kept up ...
Yes we still need JRPG's
FFVII is a good game. It did ALOT for the genere. However I agree with many above posters that many kids just don't forget their "first".
"OMG they killed Aeries!" the young ones cry.
"Yeah, so the world ended in FFVI..what's your point" the vets reply.
Chrono Trigger and FFVI are true masterpieces of RPG's and maybe even of gaming. True excellence. After FFVII too much of the RPG fo...
Im glad this game is getting the sales and acclaim it deserves. However, now Im feeling Im not in the club who knew they had a gem of a game. Is it AS good as say FFTactics...maybe maybe not, but the fact that you have to ask that question shows you how good a game this really is.
As for one of the above posters, the difficulty of the game jumps drastically in Chapter 7. (pretty sure its 7).
One could argue that FVII was the begining of a new generation of RPG's. The first MODERN RPG. Thus it gets alot of attention.
FFVI remade with an updated script, graphics and music done with a real orchestra (but the same sound) would quite possibly be the greatest thing in RPG's in the 10 years. Damn that game was epic.
Chrono Trigger would be a grreat remake too, but might to better in the art design of Valkeria Chronicles. Chrono Trigger was more "F...
Your post mentioned this, but no other commenter addressed it.
Your age is playing a factor here. Probably more than you realize.
I, like you, owned a Nintendo. Those games were freakin hard! Good lord. To beat a Nintendo game was to declare victory...Victory to all that was good in the world. It took talent.
Then along came the SNES. Greantess. Matio World, FFVI ChronoTrigger, Secret of Mana, F-Zero, Street Fighter 2, Donkey Kong Country...
Nice
SoTN is a fantastic game. Seeing that game upgraded to the current generation would be excellent.
That being said, I would like to see the series explore an idea first fleshed out in Simon's Quest. This idea opened up not only the castle, but all of Transylvania. You collected the body parts of Dracula to resurrect him to then destroy him the right way. It was really cool. It was here a touch of RPG was introduced. In SoTN the leveling up system of RPG's was introduced, but le...
And though Final Fantasy has often played with the nexus of science/technolgy v Magic...this game looks like it has completely given in to the SciFi. Not that I wont buy it, play it, and like it...its just seems to have losts its magic. (pun intended)
Honestly, I would like to see an incredible 2d version of the game. It would be like playing a painting.
Also, using the idea first proposed in Simon's Quest (different cities, towns, places) would be really cool.
I guess it could go 3d, but I like the mix of a more epic game then just going into the castle and kicking ass.
While FFXII wasn't the most character driven FF there has ever been but the game is not atrocious. Balthier was pretty cool, but Vaan sucked. Japanese developers need to realize that American audiences don't like the emo lead. Never have. Never will.
I enjoyed the fact that a separate screen did not appear when a battle commenced. But this is preference.
Is this game as good as FVII? No.
Is this game as good as FVIII? No
Is this game as good as FIX...
I've posted this before and I will post this again Im sure.
I've played the original Final Fantasy (Hard as eff btw) and the original Dragor Warrior (hard as eff too). I only mention this to show I've played RPG's for a long time.
RPG creators have lost sight of why we started playing RPG's to begin with. We nerds like the story first and the gameplay right there as a close second.
SquareSoft was a company that was a master of storytelling. Chro...
Really?
Ever play Chrono Trigger? (time traveling)
Ever play Wild Arms? (Western feel to it)
Look, VC is an excellent game. IMO it captured alot of what makes RPG's great. It is a game that transends generations and platforms and deserves a seat at the table of great RPG's. That simple
For conversation purposes...I feel that since voice acting has been introduced, story lines have headed south. Don't know why...maybe its just my age.
IMO nothing gets better that SQUARESOFT in the 90's. Chrono Trigger, FFVI..heck even Secret of Mana..were just exce...
bankai: What are you talking about? Chrono Trigger had a way better battle system. Certianly less irritating
