Agreed
Demon's Souls is far and away the best RPG of this generation are arguably the decade. Brilliant.
After that, you have a few options to choose from.
Fallout and Oblivion certianly deserve mention along with Dragon Age.
Valkeria Chronicles is supurb and probably fits in there right under Demon's souls.
Resonance is Fate is certainly a fresh look at battles in RPG's.
I for one would rank ...
Arup02: Its more "core" than you think due to the time heavy creation mode.
Could a 9 year old pick it up and play it and understand it? Sure
Is that 9 year old going to build one of those levels where you can't stop smiling at the level and the creators creativity in pulling it off? Nope.
I'm ready for this and Mass Effect 2 to come up...followed by 2 Worlds...
Depends on the genere.
In FFXIII it was way past the half way point...almost the end...not good.
In Neir, its more acceptable...
The reviewers absolutely trashed this game...And its obvious why.
The graphics are poor (but art-style is solid), the combat is passable, the beginning of the game is fetch quests, very rough character design. They quit playing...and wrapped up the review with a 6. Moved on to the next game.
Then there are those of us who like RPG's...We ignored many of the short commings for a few elements that made us fall in love with RPG's in the first plac...
FFX was very linear, but it came at a time before the whole "Choice" and "Open" world really took off.
Im not the biggest FFX fan.
FFXIII is good. Solid 7.5 (Yes you did have to play more than 10 hours for the battle to open up...and 20 for the world to open up) but it was fine.
Resonance of Fate probably should have won best console RPG. (Excluding handhelds).
Heck maybe even Neir...Im telling you jokers...Go pick it up for 15 bucks and play past the half way point.
This game interests me.
Call me crazy, but Im getting a kick out of Neir...Maybe it's because my expectations are set so low and that I payed 15 bucks for it.
Soundtrack and story (after the 1st half) are solid.
There is some creativity out there, you just have to quit relying on reviews of the major sites.
Here is to name a few that are supurb...though not perfect games they have a few things that shine.
Minecraft (Vastness)
Demon's Souls (This got popular though...this makes me happy...The game is brilliant)
LittleBigPlanet (build creativity)
Resonance of Fate (RPG Battle system)
Nier (Soundtrack and looney tune story b...
Probably means "Floaty"
Don't care...liked the first one...I'll like the second.
Best summed up Its a Tactical Action RPG.
Everything must be calculated, but sometimes you have to improv.
This is the game of the decade for me.
FF6 and that's running away with it.
Then
FFV and FFIV
FFIX
FFVII
FFXII
FFVIII
Then the rest. I really disliked FFX. When your first Final Fantasy is 1 then FFII and FFIII (The US Versions...they renumbered later) then FFX makes you cry in terms of weak sauce.
All depends on the genere.
In action games, less is more.
In shooters, less is more
In adventure games, a solid "Indiana Jones" type story will suffice. (See Uncharted for a great example).
In Role Playing, they better be epic, but for a purpose and not cluttered (JRPG's are too convoluded; WRPG's tend to lose a lot of the narrative in the freedom to choose though BioWare I think does a better job...
A few things.
1) Less Bugs at launch
2) Somehow figure out the leveling system. All Bethesda games have had some issue with this.
3) Have better written side quests. Compare New Vegas to Fallout. Obsidian wrote the side quests and they were much more interesting.
4) Have a better over arching story arch. (Look at Bioware games...They have a more epic feel)
I enjoyed it for about two afternoons.
After that, the combat gets repetitive and the "RPG" elements are just not all that interesting.
7.5-8 out of 10.
I picked up Ash right after and am enjoying it much more, but then again, Im a sucker for the 16bit Rpg's with a well written story...I forgot what thats like.
Ummmm, Final Fantasy Tactics is available on psn.
Really? Im reeeeeeech!
Maybe because Kefka actually destroyed the world...Thus a successful villian
Between LBP2, Mass Effect and Two Worlds II, I don't have time to pick this up, but might in the summer lull and its less than 20 dollars.
If anybody wants a bargain RPG right, do yourself a favor and for 15 bucks pick up Neir.
But...But...Tex, the reviews are awful.
Ignore them, but don't expect too much from the game as in production values. This game should win "Most Misunderstood Game of the Year."
