The reason why the "$299.99" statement doesn't work in favor of consoles is because:
At 299usd you are buying significantly old tech, which will cost you more per game to play. So yea if you only intend to buy 4-5 games for the console then yes console is cheaper.

I think its misconception created by the media. Tbh ever since the advent of Windows 7, PCs in general have been darn stable.
I have had Windows 7 installed on some of my PC since launch day, there yet hasnt been a crash, its that darn stable, Nvm a format and a reinstall.
I think PCs over time have gotten to be very user friendly, While its rather the consoles that have become a headache(ill explain later).

Darksouls is just one example out of so many games released for the PC that is actually locked at 30fps. This was fixed by the PC community and was unlocked.

You do realise thats because many Cpus now a days come built in with HD3000 graphics. Where as the Gpus sold by AMD and Nvidia compromise of many different variations.
Hence when you will combine all the different GPUs sold by Nvidia or AMD it will far outpace the ones represented by Intel on Steam.
Nearly 50% GPUs as per Steam stats are DX11
Near 43% are DX10
Id say those are solid figures.

There are millions of people online on Steam. Check the Steam stats most of them have DX 10 or DX 11 Spec GPUs. If games really dont need new hardware why should those users upgrade? Like it or not that is lost sale for both AMD and Nvidia.

Not to mention when i pay for a game i would like to be able to keep it. I dont like all the drama with new consoles not being able to play older games. then being forced to buy HD remakes just to play the older games.

And clearly you dont see a difference in graphics between Oblivion and Skyrim? There is a huge upgrade in graphics. Bethesda has done the best they could have done.
GTA on PS3 or even the XBox 360 was pretty laggy it ran at about 15-25fps. PS3 version specially had blurry textures. The only version that really ran well was the PC version specially once patched up.

Xbox 360 was pretty much on par with Mid to high range PCs of its time. This was because Xbox launched earlier.
PS3 was 1 gens behind by the time it launched, Since the 8800GTX launched just before the PS3. 8800GTX essentially made PS3 and Xbox 360 obsolete.
However i do agree that the next consoles will probably be lagging further behind. This is due to several reasons:
1. Price- MS and Sony both wont want to be launching hardware at a loss ...

Lol why would i spend hard earned money on 5 years old tech. My current PC easily is 2-3 gens ahead of the Wii U. Its probably even ahead of the Xbox 720 and the PS4(but thats another matter and will be confirmed once the specs are released).
Previously when consoles used to get released they used to be atleast on par with mid range PCs(mid range PCs used to cost about 700usd back then). Today even low end PCs are darn powerful and have much better specs than the ones announc...

If they are going to do Dungeon Keeper might as well do it right, with Mouse and keyboard in mind. If they are going to design for control pad then it wont be the same game.
Imo next consoles should arrive with Mouse keyboard support so such games dont have to be watered down for the control pad.

Wizziokid gone are the days when consoles used to last 7-8 years. Todays consoles generally last 2-3 years before they fail. Then you need to run out and buy a new one.
Lets see, buy a PS3 at launch for 600usd, buy another 3 years later for 300usd, looks like i just paid the price of a high end PC gaming rig, while i am stuck with the same old performance.
