Well people like it or not, the last consoles were the PS2, Xbox and the Wii.
PS3 and Xbox 360 were a bit PC like. However with PS4 and Xbox 720 its completely PC architecture. So yes the next consoles are essentially locked down PCs just branded by Sony and MS.
Not that this is a bad thing in anyway.
Lol @ people trying talk down PC from a cost perspective.
I could build a PC now with 600usd that would beat PS4 in the CPU department and Rival it in the graphics department.
Heres a link to one right now:

However this is now, 9 months later the same 600usd will get you 30-40% more performanc...
Why dont u take a look at the control scheme before commenting. No way you can shrink it down to a control pad without dumbing it down.
Yes a PS4 can probably use a mouse kb however people gaming on the couch dont like to use mouse kb. It just doesnt work for them.
In the end many franchises have been dumbed due to consoles lets leave this one alone.
Why would u want a perfectly good game dumbed down. Go play some COD zombie mode.
@Kikizoo
Check out BF3 running on 8800GTX. 720p Medium settings. 64 player MP. I bet it could probably handle 1080p with some tweaking.
6 years later its still playing games beyond what the consoles are managing.

Way back when it released Crysis 1 was still new, i remember playing crysis 1 on a 8800GTX played the game in 1080...
@teo72
Thats not how things work.
First you have to consider not all 8GB will be used toward games. More so all of it cant be used toward VRAM, its shared.
You need to chop of 2GB for OS and future reserves.
The game itself will probably end up taking 2-3GB of RAM.
You will potentially only be left with 2-3GB for VRAM.
Its debatable how much of that VRAM the PS4s GPU really will be able to us...
"Feel free to show us these PCs with DDR5 memory for the entire system like the PS4 has."
1. GDDR 5 RAM may offer high bandwidth, but comes with high Latency. CPUs dont work well with high latency and they cant really use such high bandwidth. Which is why PC has DDR 3 RAM for the CPU. It provides low latency and it provides enough bandwidth.
2. PC does have GDDR 5 RAM, since the last 4 years or so. Its the GPU that requires high bandwidth, Latency d...
Emulation wont work, emulation usually requires a lot of brute force.
The CPU PS4 is releasing with is fairly weak, its a mobile CPU. Normally Emulation requires very powerful CPUs. As of today there is no emulator out there even for the PC that can run PS3 games. Emulating the CELL and its SPEs is no joke.
I think its pretty safe to say you wont be seeing any sort of emulation of the PS3, not on the PS4 hardware atleast.
Are you going to buy a PS2 as well? Or have been replacing the PS2s that went bad all this time?
So now will you constantly be replacing PS2, PS3 while owning a PS4? Looks like an expensive and cumbersome(having 3 or more console plugged to the same tv) solution.
@trenso1
What happens when a game like Skyrim, BF3, COD, Fallout, farcry 3 lags on your console?
Stop pretending everything runs great on console, cause it doesnt and in situations when it doesnt run well there is nothing you can do about it. At least on PC people can tweak it down and make the game playable. Now if you are going to say having options is a bad thing, then i feel sorry for you.
Most games are designed with consoles as the lowe...

"do people really buy systems based on that? A man used BC on PS2 maybe twice and used it on PS3 just once. A man will keep his PS3."
Warcraft 3 launched 11 years ago, i still play it till date, I still play Counter strike, Teamfortress 2 is 6 years old i still play it. Hell few weeks back i was playing Maxpayne 2 on my PC (thats 10 years old probably).
Me and a friend still play Battlecity on my PC(its a game from the ...
If anything since the introduction of Steam, PC gaming has become very streamlined.
Steams made PC gaming into a very console like experience. Personally for me darn convenient having all my games installed and patched up automatically.
All it takes is a Click install and play, no need switching or maintaining disks. Hell previously id end up having scratched disks etc.
With over 200 games on Steam and a new gen upon us, there isnt a worry in...
Now where is Warcraft 4, its been an eternity since Warcraft 3.
"the consoles need to be very powerful"
In relation to what? the out going gen or current low end Mid range PCs?
"play all back catalog of older games discs and digital"
BC is pretty much dead in the water, Architectures have completely changed since the last gen hence BC is out the window.
People want the consoles to be cheap plus be powerful and have BC, i honestly think they are demanding a bit too much...
Its definetely got to do with the price.
You see Sony wanted the CPU/GPU to be on one chip. Thats a huge cost saving.
Intel- isnt in the position to do that - since their CPUs are darn good, but GPUs suck.
Nvidia- Well Nvidia doesnt have CPUs so they are out of the picture
AMD- and then there is AMD, Although AMD CPUs might be average to poor their GPUs are right up there with Nvidia. Hence AMD was the most cost effective ch...
@jony_dols
Best not to fall for hype. Before PS3 was launched there were chants of 1080p capable, although it was termed "capable", most people assumed most games will be running in 1080p. Bottom line none of the demanding games ever ran in 1080p most were limited to 720p.
Xbox 360 claimed to have some form of tessellation never used it in games.
Console makers generally promise more to create hype deliver less, its a fact.
Not gonna happen. If it will it will be reserved for the highest end of PCs. Mid range PCs might be able to handle it 2-3 years later.
"well isnt this version using pc assets and all that?"
The assets were already there, its not like they had to recreate them. Thats not an extra effort on their part.
No reason why Wii U version should sell at 60usd.
@Chaos
No argument there, no harm done in owning a PC and PS4. However to out right say buying a PS4 is like saving money.. is IMO ridiculous.
Hopefully we get Dolphin 2 out by then. No need to buy a Wii U as PC will handle those games better at 1080p.
