"Let see what other problems surface with the poorly-designed, cheaply made Switch handheld."
Fixed.
Surprised that it even costs that much, given how cheap the materials are (plastic screen, poor quality plastic shell that warps and peels, etc.).
The author of this article left out the most important thing that needs fixing on the Virtual Console: the poor quality of emulation. VC games have dull colors, mediocre sounds, and fuzzy graphics in comparison to the original games. Hard to believe, but the emulation from the NES Classic micro console is far superior to the Virtual Console.
For proof, just look at this Youtube video comparing the NES Classic Edition emulation to the Virtual Console:
The Switch has many design flaws, defects, and cheap materials that make it a poor gaming console. There are many problems like the cheap plastic screens that are easily scratched (even by the dock itself), to the tiny cheap joycons that lose connections and are uncomfortable to use, to the mediocre internal specs that can't even run a simplistic game at a solid 900p/30fps (never mind 1080p). Nintendo clearly cut corners like crazy on the Switch hardware, and it shows in all these problem...
Because:
- I want to support the developer and encourage them to develop a sequel on next generation consoles
- Bulletstorm is one of my favorite FPS games from last generation
- I like the ability to play games on both systems using the different controllers
There aren't enough good single player FPS games on the current generation consoles, hopefully a Bulletstorm 2 could help that situation.
I absolutely love Neo Geo games, but I already have many of them on the PS3, 360, Vita, PSP, PC, PS4, and XB1. They've been ported almost everywhere, so they're really not a good reason to get a Switch.
And besides Zelda, there are almost no games to choose from other than a few good indies and a bunch of shovelware. If Nintendo can't get enough 3rd party developers on board, the Switch is going to end up just like the Wii U, another failed console from Nintend...
Bulletstorm is a fantastic game on the 360 and PS3, one of my favorite FPS games. Already preordered the remastered versions (for $40 each with the Amazon Prime discount, they're the same price at Best Buy with Gamers Club Unlocked) on both the PS4 and XB1, really looking forward to getting them!
Absolutely embarrassing that they released such an idiotic, gimmicky trash game at the launch of the Switch. This is a classic example of Nintendo's obsession with gimmicks, which has destroyed their reputation in the gaming industry and community.
It really seems like Nintendo rushed the release of the Switch, despite having plenty of time to prepare for it. The launch library is absolutely abysmal, with only one decent game, there is no Virtual Console, 3rd party developers are not on board, and there are many design flaws, missing features, defects, and cheap materials. Hard to believe that they launched the system with so many unresolved issues, but I guess they were desperate after the Wii U bombed out.
"surprisingly solid first month of games"? Seriously?
The Switch games announced and released so far are an embarrassing joke. Clearly Nintendo failed to deliver a truly competitive gaming console, and most 3rd party developers are not bothering to support it. Way too little power in the console making it completely unable to compete, already this looks like the Wii U all over again.
Switch is selling well, but only because it just released and the usual diehard Nintendo fans are always going to buy Nintendo products at launch. The real future of the Switch will be determined by the sales for the rest of this year; once the early adopters drop off, the numbers are going to crash hard. 3rd party developers just aren't really interested in supporting the Switch.
No one should ever buy digital games from Nintendo, until they get rid of the anti-consumer policy of tying digital purchases to hardware. Even with the launch of the Switch, they haven't changed that policy.
And this is why the Switch is going to fail; like the Wii U before it, Nintendo cut a lot of corners on the design, materials, and specs. This handheld will be unable to handle current generation games, and will end up with a small selection of first party games, and a handful of Indies. Shame that Nintendo didn't build it to compete in the long run.
"Nintendo: We Prioritized Improved Response Over Making Zelda: Breath of the Wild Prettier"
Translation: "We know that our gaming hardware is weak, so we stuck with a simple cartoony style with minimal effects (but still couldn't get it to a locked 30fps). Please understand."
Reggie is really nothing but an empty PR suit walking around spouting nonsense, nothing new to see here. The Switch design was badly bungled at launch, and 3rd party support is once again almost non-existent. I hope Nintendo has a Plan B, they're going to need it.
"Unconventional" really just means, they are developing games that will be crippled by gimmicks, just like they did with Star Fox Zero. They still don't get it, people just want a solid console with traditional games, not cow-milking simulators. This company needs a complete overhaul, from top to bottom, they really seem to have lost their way.
There's a very simple reason why it didn't do well: the 3DS is old, outdated hardware with ugly low-resolution screens, and people are tired of it. Nintendo is basically pulling the plug on the 3DS anyway, and putting all their efforts into the Switch.
Good point. We see a small initial group of indie games in the post-launch window, but developers are likely to drop the Switch for the very reason you cited above: diehard Nintendo fans simply don't buy anything but first party games on Nintendo hardware.
Yep the "New 3DS" (terrible name) was just a scam cooked up by Nintendo to get their diehard fans to buy their hardware again. The second analog nub was a poorly implemented solution to the lack of a second analog stick, and virtually no games took advantage of the new hardware. Nintendo really hasn't done a good job of designing gaming hardware for over a decade (including the Switch), they really need to just go software only at this point.
Yes they are a "big deal":
- Cheap plastic screens that are easily scratched by the very dock that Nintendo bundles with the Switch (and will take heavy abuse from normal daily use)
- Stuck/dead pixels and flickering screens
- Very poor wifi performance
- Frame rate issues for BotW when docked, yet the game only runs at 900p (a bad sign when the flagship game for the system can't perform well on the hardware, particularly in its dock...
