MS should have justified including Kinect 2.0 in every box and making it mandatory beyond a few OS contols and some frivolous game features. Saying what it might do later isn't enough to justify to most $100 more for a less powerful console. MS had the tough task of selling its fan base on Kinect 2.0 as well as the console, especially after the let down experiences with Kinect 1.0.

A game to launch with Xbox One that fully utilizes Kinect 2.0 and shows off how far advan...

"The majority of the masses care only about the console," wrote the developer. "Except that the success of the Kinect carries much more weight to us."

Maybe MS shouldn't have invested so much in Kinect when they themselves admit most consumers don't care for it. They created a device with frivolous and hollow features because it's what they wanted.

On another note, I'm tired of hearing the same weak and unproven argument t...

you're right, $25 is the fair comparison. I stand corrected.

You may be correct. Kinect is a data mining tool that will allow MS to gather demographic data to sell and charge higher premiums for advertising. Kinect is a gold mine for revenue and even if they sell fewer Xbox Ones by including it in every box at a higher price they will more than make up for it. Of course MS isn't going to come out and say it, so they have to try and sell the consumer on it by touting the hollow features it "might" bring as an integral part of the experi...

They are still including it in every box, just no longer requiring it to be hooked up. Don't worry though, the vast majority of people will still hook it up out of curiosity and becuase it comes in the box. This is a smart business and PR decision from MS to placate any privacy concerns and satisfy those that aren't in on MS's Kinect fetish. Those that have a dislike for Kinect can now buy and use an Xbox One without having the device they resent staring them in the face.

The $15.00 price difference between the two assumes you are going to buy a second controller. A fair comparison would be to figure out how long it'll take before the cost of purchasing a $74.99 play and charge kit surpasses the cost of AA batteries.

I prefer AA batteries myself, always have some laying around. It's nice to be able to swap them out with new ones when you need them. Nothing worse then having your controller go dead and realize the only option is to plug it in and suddenly be stuck with a wired controller. Play and charge kits are pointless; get two rechargable battery packs and a charging stand and switch them off when you need them if you hate AA batteries.

The controller is the one thing MS nailed...

After reading the update you might be right. Sounds like if they put a little Kinect functionality in every game you would still need it plugged in; just not for watching movies. Technically you don't need it, but in practice you do. Sort of like doesn't need to be always online, just every 24 hours.

Requiring Kinect wouldn't do anything for Kinect anyway. Why would developers spend time integrating Kinect 2.0 in a meaningfull way when even with 100% install base Kinect would only appeal to those that already like Kinect? People that don't like Kinect aren't going to suddenly start liking it and buy Kinect games because they have one in the box. Kinect functionality wouldn't be a selling point for those that don't want Kinect in the first place. Third party multiplat...

so what if 100% of consumer base has it, that doesn't mean 100% of consumer base is going to be interested in using it or any games that require it.

the article explicitly said it can be unplugged and the console will still function.

I'm surpised it took this many comments before someone else picked up the on the biggest bit of information the article gave; the real reason MS wanted an always online console and mandatory Kinect.

they made Kinect mandatory to gather marketing information. Read page 3 of the article. Nevermind, I'll give you the excerpt.

"Microsoft put into effect a plan to gather continual data updates every 24 hours about its demographics. A meaningful ROI depends on a deep understanding of who is watching what -- and the ability to make adjustments quickly. Working with this technology is another step in helping Microsoft achieve a responsive strategy for managing ads and...

Has anyone noticed the tidbit of information on the third page of the article; its posted below. It explains why MS wanted to have check-ins every 24 hours and the real reason for mandatory Kinect.

Thats what I'm asking; what was Major Nelson referring to when he said they did something cool with the on/off switch?

4557d ago 1 agree4 disagreeView comment

What was the cool thing about the power button? It looked blue to me; is that Major Nelson meant, or is it cool that you can turn the thing on without saying "Xbox On." I don't know why it would be blue since green has been the Xbox color for 12 years now and blue more for Playstation.
