There is still no good explanation why the console has to connect at least once every 24 hours. Everything this article points to can still apply whether I'm always connected or not. So far all I've seen point to the benefits of being online, but not the benefits of requiring online.

Why would it have to check to see if someone else installed it on another console when it wouldn't be able to be installed on a second console, thats the point of connecting when installing a game. If someone tries to install a game (Halo#1 on Xbone #2) and the servers verify that said game (Halo #1) was already installed on another console (Xbone #1), than it would be denied unless you paid a fee. The physical disks on the Xbone are designed to work like Games On Demand do now except th...

Again, why require connections every 24 hours? Can't MS do the same by requiring connections only when installing games?

MS can garner some good will and show it is listening to its audience by easily changing a few key complaints. First, if they wan't to keep their DRM policies (I don't see them dropping them completely) they can at least do away with the requirement that you connect online at least once every 24 hours. They can still have their DRM by only requiring online connections during game installs. Why have to connect every 24 hours so they can check my game status if I haven't installe...

yeh, and look at the country from 2008 to now, its even worse when you got people that don't accept reality running things.

If EA can learn from its mistakes, I hope MS can too...quickly.

This is the most exciting console MS is putting out this year.

It seems to me allowing people to unplug the Kinect and not use it would be a simple thing MS could do to gain a little goodwill and positive press. It would show they can listen and it would alleviate the concerns many have over it, solving a negative aspect of the console. Pausing it is not the same as having it off and if it can't be unplugged than it is never really off, regardless of what MS says.

If you connect when the game is installed then it is checking if the game is ok at that time. If I'm not installing a game why does it need to still check-in, it already verified the game when it was installed. The only time they would need to mandate a connection is when installing a game.

Why have the 24 hour check in requirement when they can have all the same DRM policies by only requiring check-ins when installing a game?

I'm thick skinned enough to admit I'm wrong and take a few jabs so no harm done. I too, appreciate civility and manners, even on internet boards, so to you as well...thanks.

my apologies for taking so long to get back to you, I do have a job. If I was wrong I stand corrected. I do, however, remember a post on IGN reporting the Xbox One had an internal power supply. If PS4 can be that much smaller and have the power supply still built in than I am amazed at their engineering abilities.

After reading this it became clear to me MS's DRM vision. It sounds like it started as a digital distribution only model, but realizing the transition would be too blunt in the console world, kept disc's as an option for distribution. From MS's point of view, it's an added bonus that you can give a disc based game to a friend, even if once, because that's a step up from a digital download which you can't. So MS wanted a digital distribution only model, like Steam, b...

They can still keep their DRM policies by only requiring connections during game installs. Their is no need to require check-ins every 24 hours.

Of course the Xbox is bigger, the power supply is built in so there is no power brick. Personaly I'd rather have a larger console that still fits perfectly well in my entertainment center than a smaller console with a seperate power brick.

It's not to late for MS. They could release a lower priced sku without Kinect or at least make hooking it up optional. They can dump the 24 hour check-ins and allow it to go completely offline dumping their complicated DRM policies; the only trade-off being the disk would have to stay in the tray for installed games. Doesn't sound like anything that can't be fixed with firmware updates.

If you can't unplug Kinect or at least leave it plugged in but hidden away behind the entertainment center than its never really off. There is a huge difference betweeen paused and off.

You may be able to play a loaned game under a full moon, on the 8th day of the tenth month, but only if the crow flies south before the neighbors dog barks. You can turn Kinect off but only after you first turn it on and then it can be set to be off after being on. MS reserves the right to change its terms and conditions.

I propose a better solution. Release games earlier digitally through the online marketplace at a lower price point than a physical copy at retail. That would encourage more people to buy digital copies due to the earlier release and lower price leaving less physical copies available for resale or trade. Those that want a physical copy still have the option, the rest would get lower priced games earlier, and the publishers would lose less money on a smaller used games market. In effect, make ...
