Well, the US is still by-far the most important market for the 360.

It has to beat the PS3 here before the rest of the world will take it seriously. If Microsoft can't hold off Sony on its "home turf", then there's no chance of success.

The US is also the largest video game market, and thus the biggest prize of the console war. There's a reason a large majority of games on the market are aimed squarely at American customers.

It's pr...

"Three Halo killers in 2008?"

They're releasing CoD4 three times in 2008? That seems a bit silly.

Wow, really? So we get to pay full price for something which may as well be an expansion pack?

Ugh. They're going to Sims-up to the Guitar Hero franchise. It's going to become even more polluted and, eventually, meaningless.

This sort of thing would work infinitely better with Rock Band. Why? Because Rock Band is about a BAND. What better way to "relive the career" of the band than by actually playing through that career as a BAND rather than just...

Interesting, especially because Microsoft says the shortages will continue into February, so if they aren't lying/exaggerating, the PS3 will probably win this month, too.

I really think people are over-exaggerating the individual reasons behind this. It's certainly a complicated issue, and many of the reasons people have listed likely contributed in some way.

My personal theory is that the 360 sold a bit less than it usually would due to a limited supply shortage, but that the PS3 probably would've outsold it anyway because of the victory of Blu-Ray in the format war.

Either way, I'm surprised at how much ALL the consoles sold,...

Do you actually think Microsoft delayed shipments just to have an excuse when the NPD numbers were released?

I get tired of these Microsoft conspiracy theories. They're silly, at best. Unless you can even pretend to have a source for that claim, you just sound like a babbling crazy person.

I'm not even saying there actually was a shortage, just that your theory a bit on the absurd side. I imagine when the NPD numbers come out for February we'll know one way ...

Great post all around. Bubbles for you, good sir.

As a 360 owner, I completely agree - Microsoft needs to both make the 360 more appealing while at the same time lowering the price. That's the only thing that will keep the PS3 from steamrolling over it this year.

Wow, it looks every console kicked ass in January. It was a great month for gaming in general.

I wonder if the DS had shortages? It seemed to fall well below the expected number.

It's interesting that the 360 outsold the PS3 at Christmas, but the PS3 claimed January. It's quite possible DMC4 pushed it over the top. I don't know one way or the other about 360 shortages, so I'm not going to say that it's responsible, but it's also a possibility.

Keep this pathetic fanboy crap out of the Gamer Zone.

The Open Zone was created so people like you could sit around and debate other 13 years old about whose console can kick whose console's ass. This isn't the place for it.

I have an XBox 360 also! That's why it's funny.

Gotta laugh away the pain...

This article is super new and original and I'm glad someone finally sat down and compared the two versions of DMC4 because apparently no one else was going to.

*sigh*

Why was this even approved?

Well, it makes sense. Those of who pay attention to how technology is going know that the sheer number of studios behind Blu-ray is enough ensure it will win what remains of the format war. However, Johnny McBuymovies on the street may not have heard of the studios taking sides, or even if he did hear it, he may not know all the ramifications of it.

That isn't to say the people interviewed are stupid, they just don't pay as much attention to technology trends as pretty much a...

"And to have an HDTV and not take advantage of it with Blu ray or HD DVD. To keep watching standard DVD on your HDTV. I can't agree with that."

I have an older, big screen CRT 1080i HDTV and don't have a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player. Probably won't get one for at least another couple of years, or until I get a PS3, whichever comes first. It's a shame Sony gave 1080i TV owners the shaft, or I might already own a PS3.

If I want to watch a movie in HD, I'll ...

Apparently "not reading the article" is really popular these days.

He's not saying don't buy a Blu-ray player ever, he's saying don't buy one YET - for reasons that have nothing to do with HD-DVD.

6562d ago 0 agree2 disagreeView comment

That's exactly my point. You're talking about convincing people to make the "jump to HD" so that the new format is accepted faster, and my point is that many people don't even own HDTV's yet, so for them, making a jump to HD is significantly more expensive.

6562d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

What's the point of jumping to high def right now, especially if you don't even own an HDTV?

People will migrate when the price is right. Right now, Blu-ray players and movies are still significantly more than DVDs. These sort of drastic changes in the marketplace take time, and can't be forced by trying to convince people to spend $1000+ for an HDTV and Blu-ray player, when there's still a limited selection of movies and TV shows that cost more than their DVD counterparts. ...

6562d ago 0 agree2 disagreeView comment

This is similar to what I've said before - the mainstream isn't QUITE ready for an HD movie format quite yet. Many people still don't have HDTV's, so it's hard to justify paying more for a player and for the movies when there isn't a major difference in picture quality on a standard definition set. It's not like next-gen gaming on a SD set, which still looks significantly better, just not AS good as it could look if it was on an HDTV.

The difference between DVD and Blu-ray is...

The "Bringing it Home" thing is such a great idea. The only additional thing I could hope for would be that EVERY playable demo available at these events was also available to download and try, but I imagine that'd be too large of an endeavour for many companies.

A man can dream, though.
